Sandboxes, sub-pages and general advice

Prof. Miller, welcome to Wikipedia. I have deleted that page, as I gather it was created in error.

You don't need to keep all your work-in-progress in a single sandbox. You can have as many as you like: User:Mim.cs/sandbox2 etc, or you can make user sub-pages with descriptive titles like User:Mim.cs/Computational Anatomy. A good way to make a user-subpage is to click on Help:Userspace draft and fill in the title. You can have sub-sub-pages too, if you like, separated by further forward-slashes: User:Mim.cs/sandbox/First draft. Read all about that (if you want to) at WP:User pages.

Any of your user sub-pages that you no longer want can be nominated for deletion by putting {{db-user}} at the top (two curly brackets each side).

Wikipedia has an unfortunate reputation for being unfriendly to new academic contributors. I hope you will not find that: it may help if I explain a few points which sometimes cause difficulty.

  • Nobody "owns" a Wikipedia article, including its first author. Others can and will edit it.
  • The way disagreements should be handled is explained at WP:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle. The general principle is that if you think an edit would improve the encyclopedia, you should be WP:BOLD and make it; but if it is then reverted, you should not simply re-revert (which could lead to WP:Edit-warring), but discuss the issue on the article talk page and try to reach a WP:Consensus. If you have difficulty reaching consensus, there are WP:Dispute resolution procedures.

WP:WikiProject Mathematics is a group of users interested in mathematical articles. You can leave a message on their talk page (click "Talk" at the top of their page) if you need advice or would like someone to look at one of your drafts.

A question about your sandbox

In its present state, your sandbox is nowhere near suitable as a Wikipedia article. Is it intended to be a draft for a Wikipedia article, or are you just using it to hold content for your own use, not to prepare an article for the encyclopaedia? Reply to your message on my talk page

JamesBWatson's question above was prompted by the fact that we get, and have to discourage, a surprising number of users who have no interest in contributing to the encyclopedia, but want to use Wikipedia as a place to develop material for their own purposes. You tell me that you are indeed preparing material with a view to publication in the encyclopedia, so that's fine; and there is no deadline.

I do have another concern, since you say you are writing about "Computational Anatomy, the field I pioneered... " It is not the role of an encyclopedia to publish anything new, and I urge you again to read carefully the policy WP:No original research, noting particularly that it says:

If no reliable third-party sources can be found on a topic, Wikipedia should not have an article about it. If you discover something new, Wikipedia is not the place to announce such a discovery.

You can best assess whether your proposed contributions would fall foul of the No original research policy. If this is a first publication of these ideas, they definitely would. If they have been published elsewhere, but have not been the subject of independent comment, lack of third-party sources would still be a problem. There is an inclusion criterion called Wikipedia:Notability which looks for references showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." The test is, have people not connected with the subject thought it significant enough to write substantial comment about?

If it turns out that your work is original research from Wikipedia's point of view, all is not lost: we have a sister project Wikiversity which welcomes it. (Since writing the above, I am somewhat reassured by doing a Google Scholar serach on "Computational anatomy").

I am not qualified to comment on the material in your sandbox, except to say that it is not clear to me whether it is intended to be a single article or several; also, each section plunges straight into the mathematics, with no introductory explanation. Wikipedia likes an introductory "lead paragraph" to set the scene and give an overview. If this is a new field, perhaps there should be an overview article, similar to the existing Computational biology.

There is advice on structuring mathematical articles at WP:Manual of Style/Mathematics. You might also like to look at examples which have reached the status of "Good article" and "Featured article." See

Nobody expects an article as first posted to be at that level, but it will show you the sort of standard aimed at.

I will tomorrow post a message at WP:WikiProject Mathematics to ask advice from users with more experience in this area.

Finally, a point of technique: in conversations on talk pages (but not in articles) it is useful to sign contributions so that it is clear who said what when. This is done by ending each contribution with a group of four "tilde" characters ~~~~, which the system will turn into a "signature" of your username and the time and date, like this: JohnCD (talk) 23:07, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies for delay in replying to your last message. I am glad you are having fun, contributing here should be fun, but your idea of keeping your sandbox as a work-space for yourself and your colleagues "Even if it doesn't pass the muster as a Wikipedia article or series of published articles" worries me.

Contributors to the encyclopedia are given considerable latitude in their own user pages - the relevant guideline at WP:FAKEARTICLE says: "Userspace is not a free web host and should not be used to indefinitely host pages that look like articles... Short-term hosting of potentially valid articles and other reasonable content under development or in active use is usually acceptable." If it does not seem that what you are doing is working towards creation of an article, sooner or later it is likely to be nominated for deletion. In that case, I suggest you have a look at Wikiversity, a sister project running on the same MediaWiki software, which has a much wider brief: it is "devoted to learning resources, learning projects, and research for use in all levels, types, and styles of education".

However, I urge you again to consider making at least an overview article at an encyclopedic level about Computational Anatomy.

It occurs to me that you may get some ideas from the existign articles Computational biology and Computational neuroscience.

Another point of Wikipedia technique: when you leave a new message on a talk page, you should give it a header so that is distinguished from what went before. You can do that by putting the header on a line by itself with two = signs before and two after, or by clicking "New section" at the top of the talk page, which will present a form with boxes for header and content. If you are adding to an existing conversation no header is needed, but it is conventional to indent a new contribution by preceding each paragraph by one or more colon characters.

CA sandbox article

I have re-read User:Mim.cis/sandbox. As someone unfamiliar with the field, my impression is that after the initial overview and introduction, the article plunges at once fairly deep into the mathematics. It feels as though an intermediate-level section is missing to explain how the different bits of mathematics make up the field and fit together.

I don't know if you read the reply when I asked for comments in mid-December at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics/Archive/2015/Dec#Computational anatomy. I will ping user Ozob who commented helpfully there, to see if he can offer more advice.

After that, I see no reason why you should not click the blue "Submit" button. That way, there is no risk of immediate deletion: either the article will be accepted and made live, or it will be declined with comments and advice for further work. The article is much improved from when I last looked. I feel like I'm starting to understand (at least in outline) what the subject is about and why flows on the diffeomorphism group are a useful viewpoint. I believe that the article could be added to Wikipedia almost as-is, with two exceptions. The first is that there are a lot of collapsed boxes for "extended content". This sort of thing is generally discouraged on Wikipedia. In each case I looked at, I was never sure why the box was necessary, and I thought that there must be a way to combine it with the surrounding exposition. The second is that the same is true of subpages such as Group-Actions-Manifolds-CA, Sobolev-RKHS-CA, and so on. Subpages like this have been discouraged in Wikipedia articles for a very long time (see Wikipedia:Subpages), so it's very unlikely that you could retain this structure when the article is moved to the main encyclopedia. In the cases I looked at, it seemed like it was usually reasonable to integrate the subpage into the main article.

You may not have intended to, but you moved those articles into the main encyclopedia, where they came under scrutiny from the New Pages Patrol, who correctly pointed out that they need a better introduction and context-setting, but incorrectly nominated them for speedy deletion under a clause (WP:CSD#A1) intended only for very short articles. Fortunately speedy-deletion takes two pairs of eyes, the tags are reviewed by an admin.
I have moved them into Draft space at:
I guess that the initial "/" meant that you intended these to be sub-articles of the main one. Unfortunately, there is no sub-article structure in the main encyclopedia space - a forward-slash in an article title is simply treated as part of the title. Each article stands on its own. So each of these will need to provide some introduction and context-setting. You could start with "In [[Computational anatomy]]... ", the double square brackets providing a link back to the main article, but there should be some more introductory explanation to set the scene. Hi. I noticed the draft and checked it out, as there are always typos that the simple-minded (waves hi!) can fix. I made two changes fixing small things. Conflict of interest in Wikipedia

Hi Mim.cis. I work on conflict of interest issues here in Wikipedia, along with my regular editing on health and medicine, which includes a bit of medical imaging. Your edits to date are pretty much filling up articles with citations to publications from the lab of Michael Miller. I'm giving you notice of our Conflict of Interest guideline and Terms of Use, and will have some comments and requests for you below.

Comments and requests

Wikipedia is a widely-used reference work and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps - disclosure and a form of peer review. Please note that there is no bar to being part of the Wikipedia community if you want to be involved in articles where you have a conflict of interest; there are just some things we ask you to do (and if you are paid, some things you need to do).

Disclosure is the most important, and first, step. While I am not asking you to disclose your identity (anonymity is strictly protecting by our WP:OUTING policy) would you please disclose if you have some connection with Michael Miller's lab? You can answer how ever you wish (giving personally identifying information or not), but if there is a connection, please disclose it. After you respond (and you can just reply below), perhaps we can talk a bit about editing Wikipedia, to give you some more orientation to how this place works. Thank you so much for your gracious reply! We love' experts here - we really do. When we are able to attract editors who are experts, who want to help write a general encyclopedia for the general public our articles improve dramatically, so I hope you will consider sticking around. And it is really OK to cite yourself, but just do it only when you really have to, as part of creating content that aims to cover a topic completely. Please do read WP:EXPERT. I'd like to help get the Statistical Shape Analysis and Computational Anatomy articles into a good state. I worked in Mardia's group fifteen years ago. TOO MANY CAPITAL LETTERS

When you use excessive numbers of capital letters in article titles and section headings, in violation of WP:MOS, as in Bayesian Estimation In Computational Anatomy rather than Bayesian estimation in computational anatomy, then others have to fix the problem. Generally the first word in an article title or a section heading begins with a capital letter except in rare instances where there is a specific reason for an exception, and later words in the title are in lower case except when there is a specific reason to capitalize them, such as the name of a person or a place, etc. Michael Hardy (talk) 03:24, 10 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. Hi and thanks for your message on my talk page. The first issue is that (as has been mentioned numerous times above) you have a clear conflict of interest and have thus been asked to stop editing articles about yourself or your workplace directly, but have continued to do so. Your comment on my talk page that "My staff and I spent hours putting that material together" suggests to me that you may be in breach of wikipedia's undeclared paid editing policy and so I will be asking about this on the conflict of interest noticeboard. Specific questions about the editing of the page can be asked on its talk page, or you can see the reasons I have given for my edits in my edit summaries, but I would also remind that wikipedia articles are not owned by their subjects. Michael, You will see that I have edited the Oxford article as well. If you read WP:UNIGUIDE, the recommendations there are clear that lists like that should be for those people notable enough for their own wikipedia article only. (Otherwise, for example, many articles would have long lists of huge numbers of faculties which would need almost constant updating). That is the kind of content that belongs on the faculty or university's own website, not in an encyclopedia.

I regret to inform you that I have done major editing to your autobiography. By now, you understand that you can't objectively create an article about yourself. I was limited by the references that supported biographical content. The biography can't contain your original research. You are not your research. You were born, you had parents, went to school, grew up in a city or town...that is a biography. Bfpage, you seem to be under a misconception--a researcher is not notable because of their "were born, you had parents, went to school, grew up in a city or town." That's just personal detail--it's nice to have it, but less important than the career. If that's all that could be found it wouldn't pass WP:PROF. A researcher is notable because of their research, and that's what the article needs to focus on. I therefore restored a somewhat abbreviated version of the research. It does need to be further developed-claims to importance must be proven by a 3rd party citation--but citation counts to a paper are one way of showing its importance. It is important whom someone collaborates with--that's how science develops. I restored & abbreviated some of this, but it could probably be done a little more concisely than I left it.

Then I made a discovery and fixed the page in another way that I hoped was closer to your intent. Then I discovered that the real problem is probably in a recent change to Template:NumBlk. I have started a discussion on this issue at User talk:Justin545#Template:Numbered block and Multiline table in list lint errors. Feel free to revert my changes or do as you please.
