New York City Meetup

Next: Sunday January 18th, Columbia University area
Last: 11/01/2008
This box: view  talk  edit

In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, look at our approval by the Chapters Committee, develop ideas for chapter projects at museums and libraries throughout our region, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the November meeting's minutes and the December mini-meetup's minutes).

We'll make preparations for our exciting museum photography Wikipedia Loves Art! February bonanza (on Flickr, on Facebook) with Shelley from the Brooklyn Museum and Alex from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

We'll also be collecting folks to join our little Wikipedia Takes the Subway adventure which will be held the day after the meeting.

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and generally enjoy ourselves and kick back.

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of User:Neno8403, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of User:Neno8403 has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of User:Neno8403, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. Hussein Shuqul

Hi - we have to resolve the issue about Nugal reference on Hussein_Shuqul. You have reverted my edits to change it into "Nugal (Somalia)". Currently it links to a nude beach in Croatia. What do you suggest? Tengilorg (talk) 13:11, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

An annoying troll

Hi Gyrofrog. There's a troll over at the Middle Eastern cuisine page that's attempting to push some POV. He basically wants to drop the North African countries and Somalia from the list of Middle Eastern cuisines, but yet somehow wants to retain Greece, Georgia, Cyprus, Armenia, and other non-Middle Eastern countries. I've explained to him on my talk page that he is being unreasonable because the Maghreb countries and Somalia are often considered Middle Eastern. This is why they are included on the Middle East page but Greece, for instance, is not. He seems to have taken this badly because he has returned with this personal attack on my talk page and this racist edit summary on the Middle Eastern cuisine page. Another editor has reverted his penultimate edit, explaining to him that his edits don't jibe with other Wiki pages, but he has reverted that editor as well and keeps pushing his POV. Can you please lock the page and perhaps run a checkuser on this IP? I'm fairly confident he is a sockpuppet; he really seems to know his way around Wikipedia for a newcomer. About Somalia article

Hello Administrator

A user named Middayexpress has removed my table implementation of Somalias regions. He has not explained this , but is rather referring to as " spam "

I do not intend to "spam" anything or anyone in here as matter of fact. Its hard work and planning behind the tables.

I hope you can revert it back as I believe if I do it he will only start a revert war. Which is of no interest to Wikipedias best.

Please feel free to give your advice regarding the situation. If he continues follow around and delete sourced verified information I have no choice but to give up my contribution on Wikipedia. Since I do not have time or energy to ' protect ' versions like user Middayexpress.

Sincerely Redsoxbed

Redsoxbed (talk)

What a joke, Xetra80. Do you not think we know it's you? You write the exact same way, your text is formatted the exact same way, you visit the same 'ol pages pushing the same 'ol lame Somaliland POV. You've already been warned about creating sockpuppet accounts, but you just don't seem to get it. An indefinite ban doesn't seem to have been enough for you. Middayexpress (talk) 01:56, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice. However, the sockpuppetry wasn't just suspected but confirmed. I've nevertheless removed the offending text as it still probably was belaboring the point. Regards, Middayexpress (talk) 23:42, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

THANKS Sir,thank you for the clarification and i will try my best regarding that situation. on a side note, skejware, the guy above me is using offensive words in somali.--Abgaaloow (talk) 23:25, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Vandalism of Powell, Ohio

A user Joshgibson01 has made an edit to Powell, Ohio and it's been reverted. I'm still a little unsure of vandalism policies but it seem to fall under WP:VANDAL as a "deliberate attempt to compromise the integrity of Wikipedia." I only bring this up because the Notable residents section has been repeatedly vandalized with similar info (once from the given user and a few other times by IP address users). I used {{subst:uw-vandalism2|[[Powell, Ohio]]}} on his talk page and reverted his latest edit but I wanted to make sure that I handled the incident correctly and if there's anything else I need to do if this situation continues. Thanks for your time and help. OlYellerTalktome 18:44, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

It is really sad that i spend so much time contributing to the wikipedia specially articles about somalia and that some else deletes my contributions. i am in a revert war with someone else,in this article [[1]],he/she has vandalized my work almost on daily basis,my enteries are based on verifiable sources. [[2]ref. I dont know why he is doing so ! is it because he and the dictator are related? I cant really tell that. I may voluntrily quit contributing if that user keeps vandalizing my work. thanks. --Maxwell somali (talk) 17:41, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Re-creation of Ilkajir's page,

Hi there,

Thanks for the response, ok, fair enough, if the quality is poor, then I think others edit it and make it more suitable to Wiki's standard.

I have recreated the page with very littel information that I have put together, if again it does not seem to be ok , then I think you can deleted.

Cheers —Preceding unsigned comment added by Abdirisak (talkcontribs) 05:57, 8 March 2009

Tanbur

The two instruments are the same. It's like having an article about "Violin" and a separate on called "Violon" which takes care of the same instrument when played by a Frenchman. The During reference backs this up. Thing is; there is NO data about the actual Persian tanbur... Redheylin (talk) 23:11, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

BTW nice to run into you after all the fun in SOmalia - I can see you have done a lot of work on instruments and I'd be very glad to work with you, but this thing has become "music as nationalist icon", fine if you are an upper boghdanisanian but no fun if you want to know about the history of music! Redheylin (talk) 23:14, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

Left response at User talk:Redheylin. -- Gyrofrog 23:23, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
I did see all that - and about the Turkish tanbur I would not bother so much: that's more like "violin" and "viol" since it has altered significantly and is musicallly important in Turkey. But then that has led to a page "Tanbur (Persian)" which points to this "Tanbur" page - but there's nothing at all about poor Persians who invented the dam thing. I do not think any AhliHaqq person wants to complain - and anyhow, much as I appreciate contributions of enthusiasts worldwide - I spend a good deal of time sorting out the English on these pages - they tend to be very bad at sourcing their stuff and are often parochial. Sooner or later referenced, co-ordinated material has to win out over special interests, so please let us begin to build some articles that are based on reliable studies and have oversight of the whole field. I am sorry for not calling you in; I realise you made the disambig, but I did it exactly because I do not want information fragmented on the grounds of contemporary politics when it should be unified by the politics that held sway when the instruments spread. Insufflation

I left a comment at Talk:Insufflation#Merger proposal. I see there's been no activity on the topic for about 20 days. Do you feel bold about un-merging it yourself? I say go for it; you've been the one to articulate the problem most carefully. Cynwolfe (talk) 17:12, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Insufflation (medicine), and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: Insufflation. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally moving or duplicating content, please be sure you have followed the procedure at Wikipedia:Splitting by acknowledging the duplication of material in edit summary to preserve attribution history.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 22:13, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

All the changes

Sorry for continuing to revert my changes on the Credit Card Debt page. I realize you were just trying to help for the good of the page and site. The only reason I put my edits back in was because this was for a school assignment. I had to contribute to the page and I needed my teacher to see it before it got edited. I didn't fully understand that she could have just looked at the history. Live and learn (and read up I guess!) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.36.67.140 (talk) 04:53, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Location change (and reservations made) for DC meetup

We originally considered TGI Friday's in Foggy Bottom as the meetup location, however I stopped by TGI Friday's this evening to make reservations. I was less than impressed. They apparently don't take reservations, except perhaps if you call 24 hours ahead of time. The staff was not so helpful, and the menu has hardly anything vegetarian which is an issue for some people.

So, I checked out the Bertucci's pizza/Italian place across the street (21st & I St NW). Their staff couldn't have been more helpful, think it will be fairly quiet so we will be able to hear each other, and is a very suitable place for us. So, reservations are made for Bertucci's at 5pm on Saturday. I hope you can make it to the meetup. --Aude (talk) 02:49, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
