Wettenberg and Francesco St Jerome

Asking as an interested observer, can I ask if you have any evidence of "Markus ... von Wettenberg" claiming to be the 14th Marquis of Wettenberg being a hoax? cf. your edits to Francesco St Jerome and Wettenberg. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.125.172.14 (talk) 18:55, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Interesting that this question should come from an IP address, geo-locating to the same area as the one who produced this invaluable contribution. Just for the record, there are no reliable sources attesting the existence of a person of that ludicrous name possessing that non-existing title. Favonian (talk) 19:04, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
Yep, I suspect the owner of the IP address in question is currently involved in other fraudulent, art-related activity. I've just found Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Visual_arts#St._Jerome_hoax.3F re: your discussion. FYI see http://www.getreading.co.uk/news/local-news/reading-gallery-bid-halted-after-7406549 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.125.172.14 (talk) 19:11, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
Well, I'll be darned – though not surprised! That's incredibly interesting. Will you be the bringer of the happy news to the Visual Arts project, or should I? By the way, I apologize that my first reply was a bit snippy and lacking in good faith; this website does tend to nurture cynicism. Favonian (talk) 19:17, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
Quite alright - I'm anonymous for good reasons, but I appreciate your thoroughness! I'd also appreciate your holding off sharing the info with others for now as they might connect the dots that I have and scoop me. Once I've finished assembling a "dossier" I'll share what may come of it and you can have the honour of passing it to the Visual Arts project. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.125.172.14 (talk) 19:33, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
No problem. I look forward to seeing how this plays out in Reading, and possibly elsewhere. :) Favonian (talk) 19:39, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
So it turns out someone with a lot more authority than me has doubts about his The Scream: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/art/10962660/Did-a-Labour-council-and-the-BBC-fall-for-one-of-the-worlds-great-art-hoaxes.html - although that puts this edit into the context I suspected it would: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Scream&diff=prev&oldid=495033167 . Obviously all of this casts doubt on the Francesco St Jerome but I've no evidence on that front. Feel free to add a comment to Visual Arts :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.125.172.14 (talk) 17:44, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
Too bad you didn't get to keep that story! I'll notify the VA crowd later tonight, and probably initiate an AfD unless there's opposition to the idea. Thanks a lot for the hint! Favonian (talk) 18:25, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Taking care of vandals

Hi Favonian, it's Allen. Hope you're having a good time on Wikipedia as well you're an administrator but I don't want to be an administrator here on English Wikipedia. I remind that you watch out vandals on Wikipedia then I'm okay with the articles. No worries, I take care of the vandals instead of I'm a rollbacker to undid them. --Allen talk 05:59, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for taking care of the vandals as well I (or others) undid revision of the vandal edit on this article seen here was reverted. No worries, I have time to undo revision if he vandalizes the article again. --Allen talk 18:52, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

He/she is repeatedly disruptive editing on 808s & Heartbreak with multiple IPs. Can you please block him/her? 183.171.160.47 (talk) 11:18, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Blocking an IP-jumper is pointless, so I've semi-protected the article. Favonian (talk) 11:26, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Vandalism of Italian royalty

When you get a chance, please take a look at the edits of User:UnknownRoyals, who keeps adding a "Prince Abramo" to the House of Savoy, although no such person can be found to have existed on any genealogy of the Italian Royal Family. Thank you. FactStraight (talk) 06:33, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

Definitely "not here, etc.", hence now gone. Favonian (talk) 09:28, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

Thank you

for reverting the most recent vandalism to List of species endemic to the San Francisco Bay Area (there was an earlier one i then also had to revert), and blocking the ip. hadnt had that happen to me before, very weird. you may choose the barnstar, cookie, or kitten of your choice at the commons.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 18:08, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll ignore medical advice and go for the cookie. ;) No idea what possessed the IP – mindless, even by troll standards. Favonian (talk) 18:14, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks

for the vandalism revert. --S Philbrick(Talk) 20:41, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

Anytime. Wonder what you did to piss him off. Favonian (talk) 20:45, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
I did want to undo revision what they've vandalized the article, so it would be reverted by me, an administrator or rollbacker. You think this considers a good thing on Wikipedia to revert vandalism? --Allen talk 17:55, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Stop being a vandal

Please stop you un constructive editing. It is not big and certainly not clever. You need to have a long hard look at yourself and realise that undoing edits for the fun of it is nothing to proud of. Come on, be helpful and let's work together to build a good encyclopaedia. Bewbslova (talk) 20:01, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Please read WP:Vandalism to learn what's considered vandalism on Wikipedia. Afterwards, you can acquaint yourself with the concept of edit-warring – a transgression for which you'll soon be blocked. Favonian (talk) 20:04, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Ditto. Please learn about the Simpson and their significance. Granted, the show has declined lately but they are still yellow and still American. Bewbslova (talk) 20:07, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Oh, I'm very familiar with the Simpsons – and you just got yourself blocked. What a surprise! Favonian (talk) 20:15, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

User name

Hi. How do I change my username? What's the procedure? I don't like it that much now either. Bastard Race (talk) 18:33, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Once you've come up with a good name (that's not already taken), you fill out a form, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple. Favonian (talk) 18:47, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
I'll get right onto it. The term 'bastard' was not meant in an offensive way. It is a nickname bestowed upon us Canadians and Americans in other countries and some of us have grown to accept it. I was thinking "Bastard Editor" but that wouldn't have convinced anybody of good faith. OK, hang fire and you'll see me shortly with a new identity! Bastard Race (talk) 18:51, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
Cool! Sorry 'bout the bumpy start. Favonian (talk) 18:53, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
Thought you should know, the job has now been done. Thanx again for not blocking on premise of username, I do realize that it could easily have been done by another admin later down the line. It was "borderline" to say the least. By the way, you'll easily work out who I am from the context of this note and its location on your talk. Kindest regards. --The Old Boy In Town (talk) 21:04, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Duly noted – well, I had in fact seen your request for a change of user name. Complements on a totally innocuous name, and best of luck with your editing career! Favonian (talk) 21:08, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

Gave him a 72 hour block after [1]. And homework, he simply hasn't a clue. Dougweller (talk) 13:17, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
I was late giving him the block notice and he has simply exploded! I can't see anything but an indefinite block in his future. Dougweller (talk) 13:21, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
More fireworks made his future very short. Dougweller (talk) 15:56, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
I'll give him credit for a spectacular exit – sort of like mounting his own funeral pyre. Guess a hearty "good riddance!" is in order. Favonian (talk) 16:06, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Question

If a user has copy-pasted text from other websites multiple times in the past, does this merit AIV? I warned them today when I checked and edit, but upon inspecting their past edits, I've found more instances. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 03:01, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

@EvergreenFir: It would probably be better suited for ANI, but not just yet. In the most recent case (Hybristica), the material was in fact PD – though proper attribution was missing. Another editor left stern words on the user's talk page, so we should wait and see if that has the desired effect. Favonian (talk) 16:15, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for the reply! I'll check out the reply and watch edits. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 17:01, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Flegelein

Why do you think ,,Flegelein" is right? It doesn't make any sense! Look at the movie ,,Der Untergang". You will see — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kevin Vlădilă (talkcontribs) 18:52, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

I have seen the film, and it is not a reliable source, as opposed to the one quoted in the article. Favonian (talk) 18:54, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Oh so you think I'm so stupid without even meeting me? Explain me the logics behind ,,Flegelein"! Where does that ,,l" come from? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kevin Vlădilă (talkcontribs) 19:33, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

I have no informed opinion on your intellect, but in spite of my recommendation you obviously have not read the note in the article: "In German, one refers to someone as a Flegel (lout or brat) for lack of manners and appropriate behaviour. Flegelein is the hypocoristic form of a Flegel." Favonian (talk) 19:38, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Hassan-i Sabbah

I assure you, I am not adding inaccuracies. I am only making a clarification. Hassan-i Sabbah was a Persian Nizari Ismaili missionary. And... Born and raised in Persia, his father was believed to be a Kufan Arab claiming Yemenite origins. My only additions were made to clarify that Hassan was indeed Persian, as stated within the page, and that there is no absolute proof of his father being a Kufan Arab or proof of Yemenite origins. As the only record in mention is a 'possible' autobiography. One never proven to have ever been written by Hassan-i Sabbah. As I said, I am only adding a clarification. 1) He is a Persian (this is stated in the page) 2) His father was believed to be a Kufan Arab (as there is no proof of the source material being an actual autobiography) No other changes were made. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pahlavan Qahremani (talkcontribs) 18:08, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

You should make your case at Talk:Hassan-i Sabbah rather than my talk page, and per Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle you should not reintroduce your changes to the article until a consensus has been reached on the article talk page. Favonian (talk) 18:16, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

I have plead my case to Kansas Bear on Hassan-i Sabbah. But, as I am reading his conversations with people, he seems easy to anger and somewhat unreasonable. I am worried that he may not judge my plea fairly. Or anyone else, for that matter. But, I will trust his professionalism. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pahlavan Qahremani (talkcontribs) 18:40, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for complying with Wikipedia policies! Favonian (talk) 18:48, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Would you consider protecting Hasan i Sabbah? Another editor is writing weasel words into referenced sentences and adding undue weight to the lead. --Kansas Bear (talk) 22:11, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

Semi-protection wouldn't help, as the user in question has been around a while, and full protection is probably premature. Tedious path of conflict resolution ahead. :( Favonian (talk) 15:42, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
Any suggestions how to get this editor to use the talk page instead of simply changing referenced information? --Kansas Bear (talk) 23:42, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
I have reverted the latest instance and issued the standard warning. If that fails to bring him to the talk page, a block will be a called for. Favonian (talk) 14:40, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
Thank you sir. --Kansas Bear (talk) 15:24, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
You might keep a close eye on this article. After this post on the talk page,[3] where Pahlavan Qahremani was logged out and states my sources are unreliable(Daftary, Ralls, The Encyclopaedia of Islam). So far Pahlavan has brought no evidence or reason(besides personal opinion) for his changing of a referenced sentence or giving undue weight to a minority opinion(Persian ethnicity). Thanks. --Kansas Bear (talk) 12:45, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Considering that virtually all my edits to that article have been reverts of people declaring themselves to be "legends", I may not be all that qualified. ;) Favonian (talk) 09:19, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

Could it be a sock?

Hi, when you get a minute can you see about this user's IP 85.76.117.166, it has reverted an edit to a previous IP editor on Unfaithful and it looks a bit suspicious? Bling$Bling$Blang$Blang$ (talk) 20:34, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

Yup. Same Finnish ISP as another one, which recently made the same edit to the article. That makes it block evasion, so I've sent them a signal. Favonian (talk) 20:43, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

User:Mehmet 21 and his IPs

I believe user:Mehmeett21 is using IPs(ie. logging out) to remove information that he doesn't like and adding information pushing a Turkic POV.[4][5][6]

User:Mehmeet21, on July 2, 2014, posted on my talk page asking for protection on the List of Turkic dynasties and countries, stating, "can you protect the page " List of Turkic dynasties and countries" I do not want anyone to destroy the page". A subsequent check indicated numerous IPs had been addding information to the article. These IPs locate to Sweden. I responded to Mehmeet21, "No. Contact an admin. And if this IP82.209.191.118 is you, I would warn you against editing while logged out. Protection can only be done due to edit warring or vandalism, not for your ownership of the article."[7]

On Aug 10, 2014, an IP posted on my talk page, "idiot you take away my reference and write that he is georigan haha and under Yusuf was a son of the Ottoman Sultan Murad II. if you fix do it good i know that you heat turks but you can not hide our history!", concerning the references on Yusuf Adil Shah.[8] You will find 3 different IPs have edited Yusuf Adil Shah since Aug 8 and all locate to Sweden.

So I would imagine it is only a matter of time until references and referenced information will be removed from the Yusuf Adil Shah article by another IP that locates to Sweden. --Kansas Bear (talk) 06:49, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

How very naughty of them. IP-jumping edit warriors are a nuisance, so I've semi'ed the Yusuf Adil Shah article for two weeks. Favonian (talk) 17:54, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

A concern

I have stumbled upon an unusual high number of "new users" which appear to be removing vast amounts of information concerning the Emirate of Granada and cooresponding individual articles. Understand, these are only the ones I have found in a short period of time, there maybe even more!

Odd coincidence indeed! I'd recommend initiating a sockpuppet investigation with a request for CheckUser to root out the ones you didn't already identify. Favonian (talk) 16:46, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

Another concern

This edit and three subsequent ones by an anon strike me as possibly the same user, someone who has previously been reprimanded for wiping out chunks of other articles. I considered requesting partial protection for the page, but that wouldn't help against the signon. I'm also worried that this sort of thing may be an attempt to incite real-world action against a threatened group of people with distorted statements about their religion. Sadly, good online citations are inaccessible or broken. Could you please advise? Sminthopsis84 (talk) 22:37, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

From what I can make of it, he's opposed to using Wikipedia for "real-time" sportscasting. I have no opinion on this matter, but it doesn't strike me as disruptive per se. You could try your luck at WP:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring. Favonian (talk) 09:50, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
I undid incorrect edits as the person did not update the timestamps of the article. When they add goals and say it was made a week ago (according to timestamp) it is an incorrect info added to a BLP and should be removed. The risk of leaving the edit is that a new editor comes, see the timestamp and says "ohh it has not been updated today" and adds the same goal again which has happened on many occasions. Why

Why did you edit it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jmansmoothe (talkcontribs) 21:01, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

It was a totally misplaced, simplistic comment on race in an article about a color. Coming right after this extremely useless edit of yours, I deemed a revert appropriate. It's beginning to look like you're not really here to build an encyclopedia. Favonian (talk) 21:08, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

News socks of banned sock-master

Hi Favonian. Banned sock-master Tirgil34 (talk · contribs) who systematically has been vandalising the particular articles-(since 2012) is created new accounts after the last block. I noticed these accounts. Please check them per WP:DUCK:

and 89.204.../82.113...ip ranges belong to the same sock-master.

All of these accounts are edited the same articles with Tirgil34 and their additions are very similar to banned sock-master Tirgil's. And interestingly, although all these accounts are new, they edit/act like an experienced editor.

And this ip also likely used by Tirgil34. IP doesn't geolocate to Germany where Tirgil 's other ips geolocated but my suspicions are based on behavior. And also, I think this IP is from an ip-hider software and is using for socking purposes. 149.140.46.188 (talk) 12:50, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

It's recommended that you create links between the user pages of the two accounts. Not sure what you mean by "humour", though. The legitimate uses for alternate accounts are listed in WP:VALIDALT, and just to belabor a point: don't use the other account to create hoaxes or anything in that vein. obvious vandalism

Hi. Sorry to bother you. As you can see, the Gargoyles (TV series) article is being met with vandalism by obvious vandals and continuous edit warring. A page protection would be nice. Additionally, I would like my talk page protected in order to avoid vandalism as well as I've had repeated harassment and blatant vandals attacking me. Thanks again. - Zarbon (talk) 00:44, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

The harassment on your talk page from assorted sock is serious enough that I have decided to semi-protect it indefinitely. It's a somewhat controversial decision, and I recommend that you follow the suggestions at WP:Protection policy#User talk pages. On the other hand, the vandalism on the Gargoyles article is so intense that it merits protection at this point, and the content dispute between you and Doniago is just that, so protection would be inappropriate. Favonian (talk) 15:55, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello. I noticed that you reverted edits made by 190.57.204.31 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log), a static IP geolocating to Buenos Aires, Argentina, so I thought I'd mention that it per WP:DUCK (same edits on same articles, and "correct" geolocation) is a clear case of block evasion, being the latest sock of indefinitely blocked user Agustin.leon21 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) (with equally indefinitely blocked previous socks Agustin.leon20, Agustin.2110, Agustin.212121 and Agustin.leon22). So would you mind issuing a block of appropriate length? Thomas.W talk 17:25, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

Oh, it's him alright – I blocked a couple the Agustins myself. As for the IP, I'm pretty sure it's dynamic, so blocking it won't help much, even if it does bring some satisfaction. Let's see how it plays out and then maybe ask the CheckUsers for some appropriate range blocks. Favonian (talk) 17:59, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
Then again, he kept at it so I "sent a signal". Favonian (talk) 18:03, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
I just reverted some more edits by the IP, so he just goes on and on. According to this it's a static IP, in spite of the host name, BTW. Many previously dynamic IPs have become static over the past few years, without the hosts being renamed (very common among Comcast IPs in the US, for example). Pictures of dead presidents

I do leave a comment in the edit but the editor keeps changing the various articles so quickly and so often, I hardly have the time to do it/add it. Often my own edits don't get through because he already changed the page again... and then sometimes in the redo, I forget o add it. In an infobox, whenever there is an actual photo or daguerreotype of the person available, it trumps a painting; more so if the painting already features elsewhere in the article. -- fdewaele, 27 October 2014, 20:10 CET

I'm not disagreeing with your reverts, but the editor may be a newbie and thus won't necessarily check the edit history. Please do the decent thing! Favonian (talk) 19:11, 27 October 2014 (UTC)
I'm trying to keep up, but as I say, when your first undo edits get blocked by newer edits, it's sometimes easy to forget to reinsert comments.  :-) Some weeks ago, there was an anonymous user who on a massive scale did the same. Perhaps he/she has returned... -- fdewaele, 27 October 2014, 20:16 CET
Leaving them a message might actually have stemmed the flow. Anyway, could you please locate the IP responsible for the previous attempts? Favonian (talk) 19:19, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

Need advice

I need some advice as to how to proceed. On the Al-Karaji article, user:Seanwal111111 has been removing Persian from the lead. He has been reverted by user:HistoryofIran and myself. I initiated the discussion on the talk page, in which Seanwal's reasoning appears his interpretation of MOS guideline, "Ethnicity... should not generally be emphasized in the opening [paragraph] unless it is relevant to the subject's notability.".

My response was that if sources state the subject's ethnicity then we are required to mention it. Seanwal responded by stating, "I note that you haven't any concrete historical fact to offer bearing on his ethnicity; rather, you just assert a label.".[18]

I responded by posting numerous sources on Oct 15th.[19] After waiting until Oct 26th and receiving no response from Seanwal, I restored the reference and referenced information.[20]

Now after nine days and without even making an effort on the talk page, Seanwal has come back to remove the reference and referenced information, making the same blanket statement, "I invite Kansas Bear to try to explain why his edit should get an exception from the MOS:BIO guidelines.[21] It appears Seanwal does not have to participate on the talk page(he has not used it since Oct 14th[22]) and continues to use his interpretation of MOS guidelines to edit war:

I issued an edit warring warning to Seanwal's talk page on Oct 21st.[28]

I would like to know what to do. It is clear Seanwal is not interested in using the talk page except to interpret MOS to suit his opinion(note "exception from the MOS:BIO guidelines": Frédéric Chopin, Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven all mention ethnicity in the opening sentences of the articles). And I have shown two Cambridge University sources stating Al-Karaji as Persian. --Kansas Bear (talk) 03:32, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

Seanwal has now been reverted by HistoryofIran.[29] Unfortunately, I forgot to tell HistoryofIran not to revert Seanwal. Sorry. --Kansas Bear (talk) 02:31, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Seanwal has now reverted HistoryofIran, telling him, "You have to explain and justify your edit with respect to the MOS:BIO guidelines.", This is his fifth revert without using the talk page since Oct 14th and is starting to reek of ownership. --Kansas Bear (talk) 03:28, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi Favonian,

Could you unprotect the North Carolina State University page? In the year since you applied it there has been only a modest amount of traffic and volume of vandalism, and continued protection is probably not warranted at this point. Thanks! Deadbeef 04:06, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

my submissions

I rarely make submissions, and don't see the need for you to insult my submissions as vandalism. My most recent correction was not only a fact, but sourced and confirmed in the subjects NEW autobiography. Guga Kuerten mentions Oscar Wegner as an early coach and big influence on his tennis in his autobiography. I would suggest you be willing to do the research before insulting those who care enough to add corrections, as well as before deleting more correct information. You also need to realize their are many users from that IP address, so no need to insult everyone based on your feelings about certain submissions. Maybe you can go back and switch your insults to those who have misrepresented this history in the past and send me your apology? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:0:b200:485:7016:9b2f:259c:5f68 (talk) 20:06, 13 November 2014‎ (UTC)
