Welcome to Wikipedia and WikiProject Medicine

Welcome to Wikipedia from WikiProject Medicine (also known as WPMED).

We're a group of editors who strive to improve the quality of medical articles here on Wikipedia. One of our members has noticed that you are interested in editing medical articles; it's great to have a new interested editor on board. In your wiki-voyages, a few things that may be relevant to editing Wikipedia articles are:

  • Thanks for coming aboard! We always appreciate a new editor. Feel free to leave us a message at any time on our talk page. If you are interested in joining the project yourself, there is a participant list where you can sign up. Please leave a message on the WPMED talk page if you have any problems, suggestions, would like review of an article, need suggestions for articles to edit, or would like some collaboration when editing!
  • Sourcing of medical and health-related content on Wikipedia is guided by our medical sourcing guidelines, commonly referred to as MEDRS. These guidelines typically require recent secondary sources to support information; their application is further explained here. Primary sources (case studies, case reports, research studies) are rarely used, especially if the primary sources are produced by the organisation or individual who is promoting a claim.
  • The Wikipedia community includes a wide variety of editors with different interests, skills, and knowledge. We all manage to get along through a lot of discussion that happens under the scenes and through the bold, edit, discuss editing cycle. If you encounter any problems, you can discuss them on an article's talk page or post a message on the WPMED talk page.

Feel free to drop a note on my talk page if you have any problems. I wish you all the best on your wiki voyages! Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 01:46, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Username

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "WikiUCFCOM", may not comply with our username policy. Please note that you may not use a username that represents the name of a company, group, organization, product, or website. Examples of usernames that are not allowed include "XYZ Company", "MyWidgetsUSA.com", and "Foobar Museum of Art". However, you are permitted to use a username that contains such a name if it identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87".

Please also note that Wikipedia does not allow accounts to be shared by multiple people, and that you may not advocate for or promote any company, group, organization, product, or website, regardless of your username. Please also read our paid editing policy and our conflict of interest guideline. If you are a single individual and are willing to contribute to Wikipedia in an unbiased manner, please request a change of username, by completing this form, choosing a username that complies with our username policy. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. Thank you. Jytdog (talk) 20:49, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]
Your account has been blocked from editing Wikipedia with this username. This is because your username, WikiUCFCOM, does not meet our username policy.
Your username is the only reason for this block. You are welcome to choose a new username (see below) and continue editing.
A username should not be promotional, related to a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.
You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines and create the account yourself. Alternatively, if you have already made edits and you wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:
  1. Adding {{unblock-un|your new username here}} below. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked, as you can usually still edit your own talk page. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "Email this user" on their talk page.
  2. At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
  3. Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names. The account is created upon acceptance, thus do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
If you think that you were blocked in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below this notice, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 11:44, 24 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This user's request to be unblocked to request a change in username has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without a good reason (see the blocking policy). Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Well it's upto you to accept or not, but such username are generally acceptable. But if you gonna reject, please direct them to submit another rename request. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 16:06, 13 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@RHaworth: Perhaps I'm not seeing something. Can you explain to me how the current username violates the username policy? Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 07:34, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Account holder, considering you are supposed to be an instructor, you seem remarkably unwilling to instruct or otherwise discuss things. Your current, horrible-looking username looks as though it might have meaning. What does it mean? By all means stay anonymous. Go even further: give no hint of why you are here. Several elegant user names spring instantly to mind: "Heritage Oaks", "Sherwood Forest", "Stone Hedge" or even "Stone Henge". — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 12:38, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize, you're correct, the capitals are a bit much. I am using my initials, I am an Emergency Physician, and my niche is Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) - Hence DLEmergEBM. I instruct the WikiProject Medicine Course where I teach medical students to use evidence based resources to help edit and increase the quality of wikipedia articles! Let me know if you have any other concerns. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DLEMERGEBM (talkcontribs)
@RHaworth: I am still confused as to how the username violates the username policy. As far as I can tell, neither "DLEMERGEBM" nor "DLEmergEBM" is misleading, disruptive, offensive, promotional, or implies shared use. Would you agree to an unblock for "DLEMERGEBM"? If not, would "DLEmergEBM" be satisfactory? Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 08:32, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Kevin, the violation was stated by Just Chilling above: "looks like representing a corporate entity eg Emergency Medicine Info EB Medicine or similar".
DL, your explanation of your name is satisfactory. I have copied it to your user page and unblocked you. The version with "merg" in lower case is still ugly and the change is not worth doing. I have disabled your {{unblock-un}} template - I do not have rename rights so I could not rename you even if I wanted to. If you still want a name change, request it via WP:CHUS.
As a separate issue, I take the view that, whatever its main purpose is, any student project here should also try to teach students about being a Wikipedia editor. I feel you are not doing very much to teach yours about the use of talk pages, even the simple matter of signing with ~~~~. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 08:37, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
L235 Can you please mark above unblock template as accepted, because it's still showing in blocked category. Thanks! ‐‐1997kB (talk) 13:39, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Very appreciated, RHaworth. @1997kB:  Done. Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 18:18, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to take part in a survey about medical topics on Wikipedia

[edit]

Dear fellow editor,

I am Piotr Konieczny, a sociologist of new media at Hanyang University (and User:Piotrus on Wikipedia). I would like to better understand Wikipedia's volunteers who edit medical topics, many associated with the WikiProject Medicine, and known to create some of the highest quality content on Wikipedia. I hope that the lessons I can learn from you that I will present to the academic audience will benefit both the WikiProject Medicine (improving your understanding of yourself and helping to promote it and attract new volunteers) and the wider world of medical volunteering and academia. Open access copy of the resulting research will be made available at WikiProject's Medicine upon the completion of the project.

All questions are optional. The survey is divided into 4 parts: 1 - Brief description of yourself; 2 - Questions about your volunteering; 3 - Questions about WikiProject Medicine and 4 - Questions about Wikipedia's coverage of medical topics.

Please note that by filling out this questionnaire, you consent to participate in this research. The survey is anonymous and all personal details relevant to your experience will be kept private and will not be transferred to any third party.

I appreciate your support of this research and thank you in advance for taking the time to participate and share your experiences! If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at my Wikipedia user page or through my email listed on the survey page (or by Wikipedia email this user function).

The survey is accessible through the LINK HERE.
