Manatees and Coarctations

While I agree with you that the project Featured articles in other languages‎ is of little or no value, I find your summary comments peculiar. I guess you have expertise in both sirenian biology, medicine and the norwegian language, so I would like to see your arguments for stating that the english versions of the articles about manatees and coarctation of the aorta are at least comparable to the norwegian (nynorsk) ones. I feel that at least the thoroughly referenced overview of the manatees status in countries where they are known to exist (and the absence of trivia) in the norwegian manatee article is a pre. Likewise I find that the english article about coarctation should have the parts about etiology, treatment and prognosis translated from the norwegian article to be said to have comparable quality. --Ekko (talk) 11:28, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

WP:Transwiki

Bloffy and I were talking, and he said something about possibly requiring a WikiProject to deal with the massive transwikïing of content from one Wiki to another. I thought it might be a good idea to suggest, whereupon he said that if I brought it up with you he'd be willing to suggest it at WP:Councils. What do you think? Do you think we could attract some people with it? I think it would a.) help bring some structure to what we've been doing, b.) call some good attention to it - one of the reasons I think we've had trouble with it in the past is that people haven't necessarily been sure of what's going on, I think, and c.) get a lot more hands on board. This last point is probably the most important, in my mind; I've been doing a handful of things over the past few days, and I end up feeling like some latter-day Don Quixote tilting at windmills - everything I do, I see nine or ten that need doing after. It becomes overwhelming...and while I know there are three or four of us doing it, how much quicker would it be if we had ten or twenty?

So what say you - do you think this is a project worth considering? I'll help when I can, but I'll be doing double duty at work for the rest of the week, so I don't know how much use I'll be. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 13:50, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Righty-o, then - I'll try to work up something on my lunch break, and see where it goes. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 14:41, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
That could also work, I suppose. In fact, I think it would be better, because it would avoid creating more clutter. Oh, well...as you can see, the lunch break idea sort of piffled off, so I'll try for tonight and see what I can come up with. How exactly would a recruitment drive work? I'm afraid I'm not up on my WikiProject recruitment rules... --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:35, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I agree (about the infrastructure, that is.) Ah, well - just putting together some ideas for future expansion.
By the way - mind if I ask why you chose Calliope as your namesake? Somehow I don't think you're a sentient circus instrument...and I rather doubt you were around to inspire Homer with the fire of epic brilliance. Although I could be wrong... --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:43, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
So it was the circus instrument...which reminds me: ever hear P. D. Q. Bach's Toot Suite, for calliope four hands? I think I've got a recording around the house somewhere.
My favorite picture book as a kid - already colored by my father, no less - was a picture book of opera stories. Explains a lot, actually. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:48, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, typical P. D. Q. Bach. Anyhow...I'll maybe work up something on reappropriating WP:ECHO and run it by you and Bloffy later tonight. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:52, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Best thing would be to rework the old ECHO project and WP:Translation into one mother of a project dedicated to getting these ludricously high number of articles expanded and started. We'd still need to make a proposal at WP:CCOuncils "spam" as many former member of editors who have foreign language templates on their user pages yes i know that is thousands but thats what we need! and get them involved and then start a project hopefully on a grander scale. My brain fries every time I visit another wikipedia the missing content is mind boggling. Dr. Blofeld White cat 23:13, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Template:2000-2009VSFashion Show‎

There are a couple of IPs that have been fighting me about Template:2000-2009VSFashion Show‎ and List of Victoria's Secret Fashion Show models. They have come up with a lot of information but some of it conflicts with IMDB in one sense. They have picture galleries (www.VSHolic.com) from every 2000-2008 VS Fashion shows that show almost all of the models that were previously included on the lists. They are insisting that the ones not pictured were not in the show. I had previously found a picture gallery for the 2008 show that excluded Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Thus, I am not certain that anyone should claim a picture gallery includes all models. In addition, I view the VS Fashion Show as an All-star game for models where being named to the team is what counts and a last minute inability to perform does not mean someone was not on the list. I.E., baseball players count All-star selections regardless of whether they played or dressed. I have asked the IP to sign in. They remain anonymous. Any thoughts?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 02:30, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

How clever of you...

...to have created a template for translations from Walloon. I hadn't thought to look into it, because I didn't think there would be that much to translate. Boy...was I wrong on that one. Tons of stuff - I've finally had the chance to put it into use here. Looks like it could end up being very useful. Anyhow, just wanted to say thanks for being so thorough. :-) --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 16:12, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

POTD

Hi Jen,

Just to let you know that the Featured Picture File:Selassie restored.jpg is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on July 23, 2009. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2009-07-23. That's his birthday. howcheng {chat} 21:15, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

POTD advice

You understand the POTD criteria far better than I, so I have a question: would you say that this would have a shot if I put it up for nomination? I think it's a marvelous shot of the whole station, and if you think it has a chance at passing I'd like to nominate it. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:16, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice - I think I'll go for it, then. I do disagree on the je ne sais quois, mainly because for whatever reason it grabbed me, and I'm still not sure why. I guess I figure if it happened to me, it can happen to others. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 00:11, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

What about File:Algeria Square Tripoli Libya.jpg? How was your trip? Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:07, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Glad you had a great trip. Sorry to hear about your camera, we really needed those photos!! As you can see the coverage of Panama on here is one of the worst. I bet you've been to a few cities in Panama where you could probably write masses about them and they are probably only a few line stubs on here! Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:45, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Thats great work you're doing, it seems odd to actually see a referenced half decent article on Panama. Oh its exactly because of the state of articles even on major cities that put me off editing wikipedia from time to time, there is just a humungous stack of work needed to get them up to a decent status and I haven't had the time to tackle Panama yet. I did make a start on the districts and I believe I made a template or two. If I was continuing with Panama I'd get the districts started and then probably the Corregimientos. There might be a source for district data not sure about smaller towns other than what is listed on some of the gazetter sites. Best way to discover any potential government population data is to browse the articles on Spanish wiki, thats how I found most of my data by being nosy on other wikis! I know one guy sub stubbed most of the larger towns in Panama not long ago though. There are still a huge amount missing and of course needing referencing! Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:17, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Firstly, that was honestly the first time I've seen cookies in the "header" of a user's "new section" page. :) Secondly, just out of curiosity, what was the public domain source you were talking about in your edit comment here? It was awhile ago.--Rockfang (talk) 20:40, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

With all the help you have already rendered this probably is asking for too much, but the article really needs help, the kind of help probably you can provide easily. I have checked your work on the article, and I am convinced that you are probably the best thing that happened to it since it was created. :) Will it be bothering you too much if I ask you lend a hand? The lead isn't leading, and it really needs to be developed. I'll be there with you, and will be ready to do anything that ask of me. But, a skilled hand is a skilled hand, and I can't replace that. Aditya(talkcontribs) 14:26, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

A big smile at that. Yep, history of the bikini can't be a suitable subject for anyone's taste, apart from the perv and the nerd perhaps. My biggest joy in the article is that I could, if I may claim it myself, turn this into a seriously encyclopedic material, not a piece of fancruft. This has given me the confidence that with due diligence and research anything can be turned serious...
Well, enough patting my own back. There's been concerns about the lead, particularly the fact that it doesn't summarize the article appropriately. The concern is very valid indeed. I have trying to get help to that end for quite some time. But, well, it's a trivial subject, and no one really responded. Since the League of Copyeditors ceased exist, these kind of help dwindled significantly.
Sorry for the length of this message (I have underlined the key part), but I'd like to say one last thing — though it may seem otherwise, I meant no disrespect on the review page, and I did put a DB-author tag to the image you decided to be unnecessary. Thanks for everything. Aditya(talkcontribs) 15:00, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
P.S. I am trying to work on the lead, too. So, you can just guide me, if you prefer it that way. Thanks again. Aditya(talkcontribs) 15:00, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Blitz road rovers2.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Blitz road rovers2.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Question about file deletion

I can't understand why maps showing municipalities in Goias, Brazil were nominated for deletion since they were all taken from the Wikipedia commons. Unless of course the maps are also being deleted from the Wikipedia commons. Can you explain to me, using simple layman's language, the reason for the nomination. Vogensen (talk) 20:57, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

So what do I do? You said that the files do not appear in any other artiles, but these maps showing locations of the municipalities in the state of Goiás appear for around 250 municipalities in the English section and for the same number in the Portuguese section. They are colorful and informative and are all available in the Wikipedia commons. I really cannot understand why they were nominated for delection since they do not violate any copyright laws. overflow in climate chart

Hi, Calliopejen --- when I look at Cherrapunji with Firefox under Linux, I see that the precipitation bars on the climate chart extend far up into the article, obliterating the text of the article. I suspect that the template needs to check for an overflow, but I lack the skills to edit the template: could you do so? Thanks! —hike395 (talk) 09:42, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Stretching the box could be an extreme measure --- look at how big it would be at Cherrapunji: hundreds of pixels tall. Although it would make the point that it's a rainy place :-).
If you don't think you can do it, where would you recommend I place my request? WP:WikiProject Climate?
Thanks a lot! —hike395 (talk) 15:53, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Do you know much about U.S. copyright law? Because of my work with images on Wikipedia (and texts at Project Gutenberg), I've gotten a pretty good layman's handle on how to tell if a work is in the public domain in the U.S. Cornell's factsheet is particularly useful. But there are still serious holes in my knowledge. If I have questions, are you someone who will have a better grasp than I would? All the best, – Quadell (talk) 21:01, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

From EricdeKolb

In attempt to answer your question as what the picture is about (Media Copyright Questions), well, it is a picture of Eric de Kolb at the Bodley Gallery talking to a woman in front of one of his paintings.

All of the photos of de Kolb are all copyrighted except for one (this one is just a personal photo). I guess I will use that one picture of de Kolb here in Wikipedia. It's too much fuss to have to try and contact the original photographer. .

For every category you create, you should specify parent categories to which it belongs. You can do this by listing the parents near the bottom of the page, each enclosed in double brackets like so:

I've added at least one parent to the category. I invite you to check my work for accuracy and completeness.

Image deletions

Please be so kind, in future, as to actually read image pages before nominating them for deletion. When the image page says that I took the image, and I released it into the public domain, I don't really appreciate getting notices saying that it was nominated for deletion because someone found reading what I'd written too terribly strenuous a task.

Furthermore, your note on my talk page suggested that you had listed more than one image for deletion; if that's the case, I can only find one mention on the files for deletion page. Nonetheless, I would appreciate you withdrawing the request in the first place. Rebecca (talk) 01:57, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

A polite question would not go astray. Since that tag was in fact the proper public domain tag when the image was uploaded, I dread to think of how many perfectly legitimate photos taken by less active Wikipedia editors you're getting rid of by nominating the whole bloody category for deletion. Rebecca (talk) 02:12, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Hey Calliope Jen. Yeah, Rebecca (nee Ambi) is one of the most senior Wikipedians, and she's done a ton of good for Wikipedia... but she can be as grating as a sandblaster. We all mostly just put up with it, since to be honest, she's been through some serious shit here. Doesn't excuse the way she's talking to you, but I thought I'd give you some background. Well done keeping your dignity in the face of incivility. All the best, – Quadell (talk) 02:15, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Travel

(Thanks for the cookies.)
I don't know how you like to travel, or what sort of accommodation you are prepared to put up with, but I think it should be possible to enjoy Australia and New Zealand on US$30/day. When I was a student I spent 2-3 months in New Zealand and never ran out of things to see, places to go and people to talk to. (Mind you, that was several decades ago.) If you're into bushwalking/trekking/hiking/etc. both Aus & NZ have some really spectacular trails, and in certain places they have huts set up a day's walk apart. In thinking about Australia, thing of the US mainland moved 10-15 degrees latitude closer to the equator, with one-tenth the population i.e. there is amazing geographic diversity without all the people in the way. Also, (despite what the media like to emphasise), Australia is still a fairly safe place for a woman travelling alone, and even in the cities people are friendly and helpful. If this raises your interest, I'm happy to try to guide you towards more information. Who knows, I may even be able to supply some of it myself. Bon voyage! --Pdfpdf (talk) 03:55, 18 April 2009 (UTC) P.S. Spring is the best time of year to visit Australia; I see you plan to take "(early Aug-late Dec)" - how convenient for you! (Unless you are a snow-person ... ). And we speak a version of English here - it won't take you long to get used to the accents. And we use dollars & cents which are more-or-less similar value to yours, but a lot more colourful. Pdfpdf (talk) 04:19, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

I'd like to say "that will teach me to make assumptions", but it won't!
I'll be interested to hear what you decide on. Good luck! Pdfpdf (talk) 14:22, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
And just a note from me -- I hear Honduras is beautiful and inexpensive. There are month-long cruises for less than $30/day, but it doesn't sound like a cruise is really what you're looking for. (And travel is always cheaper if you're lucky enough to have a vacation partner, of course.) All the best, – Quadell (talk) 18:22, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Speaking of Australia, there are quite a few excellent bush walks in my home state, Tasmania. They include the Overland Track (6 days), Port Davey Track (4-5 days), South Coast Track (6-8 days), Freycinet Peninsula (2-3 Days), Maria Island (2-3 Days). You'd probably need to do the South Coast and Port Davey Tracks in series to avoid paying for a plane flight back to civilisation though. There are backpacker hostels around for low prices. Hiking is cheap. Noodle snacks (talk) 12:41, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

sufficient ?

I arrived here half-an-hour ago - you have an interesting, (and distracting), page!
Regarding your edit and the associated comment: "dmoz link is sufficient", I don't agree. For example, ACM SIGKDD is the driver behind research in the field - they run all of the notable conferences, and publish the most respected of the journals in the field. "dmoz" doesn't seem to mention them. Therefore "dmoz" is not sufficient. Your thoughts? Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 04:28, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

Feel free to add back the links if you think they're valuable. Calliopejen1 (talk) 14:08, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, but that's not quite the issue.
You removed those links saying "dmoz link is sufficient". Why did you think it was sufficient?
If you now no longer think that the "dmoz link is sufficient", then it will bear more weight if you to restore them, particularly if you provide the reason for your changed opinion.

My user page is filling up with notices of imminent deletions of images I couldn't care less about. Would it be possible in future to delete without informing me? I'd be grateful and relieved. Thank you.--Hugh Manatee (talk) 12:42, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

external media

You critized the deep linking, well it isn't actually forbidden by wikipedia guidelines. Most of the sites I linked with this template aren't run via advertising. While it's certainly a benefit for the owner of a page if people view all his advertising, our interest is to show a specific image without the burden of navigating another page. The next problem is that by providing only a link to the page, we endorse the content and that gives me a lot of headache because good images aren't always from good pages, let alone factual accuracy or the page is a blank list of nondescriptive names for a list of images. However, we might help someone interested in the page by improving the link to the page an image is from. Any suggestions for this? Wandalstouring (talk) 11:25, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

New image project

Hi. This little form letter is just a courtesy notice to let you know that a proposal to merge the projects Wikipedia:WikiProject Free images, Wikipedia:WikiProject Fair use, Wikipedia:WikiProject Moving free images to Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia:WikiProject Illustration into the newly formed Wikipedia:WikiProject Images and Media has met with general support at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Files. Since you're on the rosters of membership in at least one of those projects, I thought you might be interested. Conversation about redirecting those projects is located here. Please participate in that discussion if you have any interest, and if you still have interest in achieving the goals of the original project, we'd love to have you join in. Rekha

My o my you are up early this morning Mangostar. Did you check the image you speedy tagged? It is not a reupload of the same deleted image. The drawing itself is legit the copyvio apparently was the bit in top left. Did you see this? So basically you think that the the drawing which is listed on flickr as Creative COmmons 2.0 and was self-made is also a vio. If the violating part of the image is taken out is this still really a vio? Interesting. Dr. Blofeld White cat 11:55, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Delete it then, its still an awful image. Looks like Reese Witherspoon. We'll have to get Raul to find a photograph under the India FM agreement. Dr. Blofeld White cat 11:59, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Why do you have my talk page on your watchlist? Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:07, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

OK cool. A copyvio is a copyvio. I have no problems with deleting that image, rather it was the circumstances in which the image came to be nominated. I tend to flare up when the circumstances of something seem odd, or an editor who I have continous diagreements with just "happens" to delete something at a time when another is commenting on the image (even though its been on here for six months) if you see what I mean. You know, kind of like when a related group of editors turn out at an FAC or something and all vote strong oppose. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:12, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

I noticed you also edited the tea production article. That image of the museum I can assure is not a vio. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:17, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

If I can somehow make an agreement with this user. Would the image be acceptable to you or would you dismiss it as a vio? Possible vio da ya think? I mean the flickr user has the same name as the website. Any thoughts? judging by the users photosrtream I'd think an obvious vio. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:34, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Alright I give up, I can't see how we can get a replacement in the near future anyway. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:38, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Great source you found? What do you think I've been doing all these months with Mexican municipalities?? LOL. I "know" about this source and have been working through each Mexican state linking to the enciclopedia to give people a chance to expand them. I've been working on it gradually since at least July last year! Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:43, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Yep I've only been adding infoboxes to the existing one rather than links. With the ones I've been starting I've been using it. Thats what I said before there's no reasaon why ALL of the municipality articles shouldn't be up to B class status. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:46, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Yes thats what make sit evne more of a headache in that it lists tens even hundreds sometimes of villages within the municipality with data and there are so many municipalities too. Its the same with Spain with all the municipalities and parishes then villages within all the parishes. The quality of these two countries on here is atrocious its exactly the sort of thing that makes it seme to big a task even for me! Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:55, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

deleted page

Hello Calliopejen,

You deleted a page (4/25/09) we made for our lawyer friend Joe Sellers on. It said copyright infringement but that is false. All content was linked to and hosted by the original publishers. Please put this page back as the lawyer needs this so people can find him. If you feel this is not correct please tell me why? Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.38.197.202 (talk) 11:54, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, it cannot be restored until several problems are fixed.
1) There must be a release by the copyright holder of the website indicating that the text may be reused under the GNU Free Documentation License. If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it and republish it— then you must include on the external site the statement "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.3 and later." Alternately, someone with an email address associated with cmht.com (whoever is the copyright holder) can email permissions-en@wikimedia.org with this permission statement. If you do this, you should reference the article Joseph M Sellers and ask if someone can restore it. If you cannot secure this permission, you may rewrite the article in your own words.
2) Even if the copyright problem is resolved, you must provide evidence that Sellers is notable, meaning that he has been discussed in-depth by sources that are independent of him. His own firm's website or press releases don't count, and directory listings are insufficient. I don't think you will be able to do this, judging by my internet research.
You may wish to create an account during this process so that people may leave you messages more easily. Calliopejen1 (talk) 13:45, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Freedom of Speech

I may have found your reference. See Wikipedia:Reference desk/Humanities#What article am I thinking of?. Good luck with the exams! Cheap places to travel to would include Cuba, via Canada, though that may be a problem if you are a U.S. citizen. Most of the other relatively inexpensive places to go are an expensive plane ride away: China, for example, and India, as long as you stay away from the tourist hotels and can eat local food prepared for locals. New Zealand was a lovely place and not as expensive as other western(ized) countries, but $30 a day may not keep you, unless you can find a job and are prepared to work. // BL \\ (talk) 13:19, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

A question

Hello! This is a question of curiosity really, but I have noticed that you have made several edits of the same kind which I am unsure as how to understand; for example, your edit that Du Londel Troupe was : (not featured at sv.wiki). What exactly does this mean? It does have an article on Swedish wiki, but perhaps I missunderstand the word "featured"? --Aciram (talk) 16:13, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your reply, offer and question. I saw the FAOL as a way to indicate that information from another article (featured or not) could be used to expand an article; as long as that other article had further information. I did not realise that the tags only aplied to featured articles - featured articles are those marked with a yellow star, I believe? Keep up the good work! I basically do editing and new articles when I have the time to kill. Your last question I have answered above. When I do translate, I use Translated, as you can see in my last articles.--Aciram (talk) 11:24, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Goats

Hi there!

I just wondered if you could clarify the deletion of File:William Windsor goat retiring.jpg?

I thought it fitted perfectly into this bit of fair use (although it does't specifically mention goats);

"for some retired or disbanded groups, or retired individuals whose notability rests in large part on their earlier visual appearance, a new picture may not serve the same purpose as an image taken during their career, in which case the use would be acceptable."

As the article discusses the retirement pagent, and the specific dress of the goat in the pagent, I thought that this exception would apply.

Please advise.  Chzz  ►  21:01, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Iranian

Hi Jen. I noticed there is a lot of good articles like this on Iranian wikipedia. Check out the templates at the bottom it seems they have a good guide to each province of Iran. I wondered if we have a expand templates for this wikipedia? Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:41, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Shame there isn't an online translation with google as I can't tell what the names are in english! Either way though it's good to know that Iranian wiki is developing. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:34, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Well we know it is in Isfahan province, check out this Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:39, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Indeed that would be good. I would like to see something operating on a much larger scale then present that's for sure! Ideally we need groups of editors actively concentrating on getting missing articles form other wikipedias onto here for each language by comparing categories etc and expanding our existing ones into better articles. English wikipedia would improve hugely if we we could do something more efficiently to bridge the language barriers and get every article on here as good as that of any other wiki. Of course we are miles ahead in many departments but in many areas we are sadly lacking. I started a few articles to other day on major rivers Central Asia of which lots of the other wikis even like Czech wikipedia had decent articles on yet we had nothing. Expand language

Hi there! I noticed the Expand language template which you created, and I think it's pretty cool. I think that there's one more bit of functionality that could be added to take it to the next level and make it incredibly useful. There should be a Category:Articles requiring expansion from another language (or some such), with subcategories for each language, such as Category:Articles requiring expansion from Spanish. Adding the Expand language template would automatically list the article in the appropriate subcategory. This would allow multilingual users to browse the languages they are familiar with. You seem to be better at coding templates than I am, so I figured I would just tell you rather than go ahead and screw up your template. Whaddya think? --Cryptic C62 · Talk 15:19, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

If you have time can you find out what the copyright law is in Morocco? Its just I've found a rare 1940s postcard image of a street in Tangier which I could sure use in my new article. Dr. Blofeld White cat 11:10, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

See here The uploader is confident enough to indicate 1945 so I think it is safe to say it is form the 1940s or at least pre 1959. I think you can see this anyway by the photograph. Would such an image be acceptable to use, copyright wouldn't depend on the uploader would it? Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:02, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

The thing is there are number of decent quality modern colored images on flickr which are appropriately licensed which look like this street but most of the flickr uploaders annoyingly don't bother to attatch proper labels to their images. (Just like Bhutan) Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:21, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

Annoyingly 6 months later somebody still has not OTRS ticketed File:MichaelCrichton.jpg despite sending an email of confirmation. DOn't ask me to find the original email I get hundreds of emails every month. The photographer for Harvard said we are free to use the image and this was in his email. Do they have to question every frickin thing on here? Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:00, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

I'm being spammed in the commons with deletion warning messages despite the fact I've gone out of my way to make flickr agreements and have sent emails of confirmation to the commons. If nobody was convinced with the message saying yes we are free to use them why didn't any admin in the commons bother to chase them up. To me it seems people are happy to delete images rather than trying to keep them. These agreements should have been OTRS ticketed earlier, is is any wonder why a lot of people give up trying to help the commons? Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:07, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

That's awesome! A decent translation scheme really is the key to future knowledge sharing on the web, especially as the developing world increasingly gain access to the web.

There's a neat video on youtube about it here

Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:00, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Bit disappointing about the non availability. Thats odd, you'd expect foreign into English to be done first. I have a question. There are a a group of Honduran deputies I'm starting but I'm a bit confused with the naming. Do you think Mario Alexander Barahona Martínez is Mario Alexander Mrtinez Barahona or what? The listing on the website list it as Barahona Martinez, Mario Alexander Dr. Blofeld White cat 23:02, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Yeah why is it Central Americans can't have just two names they have to have at least four! Brazilians are even worse!! Hey I just remembered 2003 Bam earthquake which I had begun developing. I had intended developing it to FA with Editorofthewiki. He gave up on us though, and I'm not convinced however good the article would be eventually that it would pass FA anyway. Dr. Blofeld White cat 23:19, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Yep indeed and say for example the end names were something like Aguilla Barrios Martinez do you refer to them as just Aguilla or Martinez or do you have to keep repeating Aguilla Barrios Martinez everywhere in the article! A nuisance! I'd better go to bed now I'm editing with one eye open my left eye is pollinated unfortunately! I feel like I have sandpaper in my eye! My right eye is fine though! Buenos Noches! Cheers ww2censor (talk) 04:36, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

that is not the main point...although one of them.

let me understand? YOU and the others who monitor this site have unilateral right to edit, remove or dictate content? Yet, if I find your site to be self serviing and "UN" encyclopedic...then I am guilty of "vandalizing" your site? What are you from Columbia?

What relevance does your preamble on your site provide?

I "started"..."started" a page about a person for whom a College Scholarship was issued. In addition to providing potential tuiton assistance to a student out there somewhere, this link would also provide historical significance vis a vis information on a United States Citizen who died in the attacks of 9/11. The significance here is not the "obituary" or "Non-relevant bio"...as if only you and your thoughts are relevant. The fact here is that this person is of more significance than a guy who throws a 90 mile an hour fast ball, or someone who got thrown out of office for bribery.

I find your whole system and values suspect. Your editorial skills, and ability to determine what is "article worthy" is suspect. I hope you all take solice in comfort in your ability to "control" content at this site. I assume by the very nature of your availabililty that you must be using this site as a method of assigning some self-significance to your life. If you were "good enough" to be editing something of note, you would be getting paid for it there...rather then exerting "power" here.

I find you and the other "editors" comical...in a loser type way. You people have no respect for business people. You are lost in the internet and your impersonal make believe friends discussing philosophy, "art", "history" and other people's lives...because you don't have one of your own.—Preceding unsigned comment added by MitchCool (talkcontribs) 21:03 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi Jen,

Just to let you know that the Featured Picture File:Waldseemuller map 2.jpg is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on June 23, 2009. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2009-06-23. howcheng {chat} 03:12, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Use of nonfree adverts?

I removed the use of this photo in Frankie and Missy Rayder's articles with an "unneeded nonfree advert" explanation, as they're a little too blatantly non-free and rather unnecessary for whatever rationale is or could be provided, IMO. I see you've made similar edits and I just wanted to see what you thought of the use of this photo in case my edits are undone. (I haven't nom'd it for deletion or anything.)  Mbinebri  talk ← 18:24, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Should it be nominated for deletion then? I'm not sure what it would fall under in terms of grounds for deletion.  Mbinebri  talk ← 18:38, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
Lo and behold, the pics were re-added w/ the rationale image is not an ad. It is FU of an image that depicts the subject, which is a rather weak argument as a free image can depict the subject just as well. What should the deletion nom be? "Weak fair use claim for copyrighted ad/catalog scan"? I don't know how appropriate that is. "Fails WP:NFCC#1 or/and WP:NFCC#8"?  Mbinebri  talk ← 02:33, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
Nominated.  Mbinebri  talk ← 13:20, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

I need your advice...

...O maven of all things image-related. I've been adding portraits to as many articles on members of the Continental Congress as I can, and I came upon this image, which is used to illustrate the article on one Thomas Contee of Maryland, and which is claimed as his portrait. Thing is, it appears to actually be a portrait of his son, Benjamin Contee, whose portrait I uploaded the other day. The two are beyond merely similar; note the facial expression, the wig, the features, the costume...I think the first has been mislabeled. (Why the first? I have a reliable source at home - a book published by the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery - which reproduces the miniature upon which the print of Benjamin was based, and which states that it is a likeness of him, and not his father.) What's the best way to handle something like this? How would I go about getting the first image properly labled? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:02, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Okey-dokey, that's what I'll do, then. Thanks!
BTW, forgot to mention...congrats on the nifty bit of paper with Latin writing all over it. I've got one of those myself...and from a university that's just a wee bit younger. ;-) (Mine was chartered first, though. Nyaah.) --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:23, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Can you improve Chitré? Can you translate the history from spanish wiki and notable people etc and add any book references you have? P.S do you think File:Qatar Pearl Lagoon.jpg it would stand a featured chance? It is a little dark, maybe it quite be lightened? Dr. Blofeld White cat 10:30, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

A response

Yes, Zawiat al 'Urqub (or el 'Argoub in Libyan Arabic) is a town some 30 km (20 m) west of Al Bayda. All I know about this town that:

 1. There is an animal medical center there, and I don't know if it still exists.
 2. There is a dairy there. I don't know also if it still exists.
 3. The government tried in vain to rename it Al Fajr Al Jadeed (i.e., The New Dawn).

Hi Calliopejen1, thanks for your note on my talk page, unfortunately I am ensconced in the hinterlands of Canada. I stumbled upon the Frank Hawks article and noted that it required some work. I was unaware of the many problems in images that were submitted but I am now getting the picture (pun intended). There are probably some PD images about but would a movie poster, comic book cover work? Frank Hawks became a "media darling" with contracts with Post Cereal, a radio show, acting in a feature film and a starring role in a long-running movie serial. Expanding Galadriel

Hi Jen, I noticed you asked for an expansion of Galadriel with content from the Spanish Wiki. At first glance, although I do only read a tiny bit of Spanish, I can't see any major differences between the two articles. The English one over here looks shorter but imo it does have the same structuring and information as the Spanish article. That said, the Silvan Elves could need an expansion from their Spanish counterpart. De728631 (talk) 20:33, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

We could indeed use the "crítica" section from over there, in fact I started to translate a phrase from that but couldn't manage the rest. Added a request on our article's talk page. De728631 (talk) 21:19, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Jeffrey Hunter

Can you? I am the person who originally uploaded that image, so I am disappointed that it is gone. — Walloon (talk) 06:48, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Iran

Jen are you certain that no towns in Iran are notable? There seem to be a number of small towns and large villages with articles on Persian wikipedia that look notable to me. Are you basing it on the fact that some of the villages do not look like much on google maps? Personally I think we should aim to get the smaller towns onto wikipedia from Persian wiki, evne if we do not add the small villages. Dr. Blofeld White cat 08:57, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Ah I see lol. I thought it odd as I know that generally you believe most places larger villages and towns to be notable. I agree, I think the main towns and cities should be started first and lists of villages drawn up by province. Then when info become available they can be started. Basically I think we should go where the info is. I'll get the main towns by province started once they have trnaslated the templates I created. Next job for municipalities though is transferring from Czech wiki. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:07, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Jalil Ziapour

Dear Jen,

Today I got so glad when I found out that you've created Jalil Ziapour's article in English Wikipedia. I'm Mahsha Ziapour, daughter of Jalil Ziapour and main contributor of this article in Persian Wikipedia.

From your discussion page, I noticed that you've started to translate Persian articles into English, which is great. Also thank you for initiating my father's article in English wiki. I'll translate the whole article ASAP, and then I'll ask for your comments. Mahsha (talk) 20:58, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Re: FAOL templates

I have not seen anything that mentions that these templates were deprecated, is there a discussion and consensus? As to the tags on the article itself, I have no issue with them, in fact I regularly undertake maintenance tagging runs with Friendly. -MBK004 22:33, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

I have no objections to you going back and removing the template where I have put it back, but please do not remove Talkheader tags on talk pages when they are present. -MBK004 22:57, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Substituting surname

Any idea how you can {{subst: a surname in the page title to DEFAULTSORT sort the categories? Its just I have a large batch of German politicians to transwiki and I want to do it more quickly. So basically when you create the page it automatically places e.g Fritz Baier as Baier, Fritz in the categories. If not I gather there is a bot that can default sort the categories by surname and fix it afterwards?

I'd imagine it is something like {subst:PAGENAME} but with a little programming to read the last word of the title and place it first. It would save a great deal of time anyway. WOuld you able to make a Template:REVERSEPAGENAME or something which places the last word of the title first? Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:29, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Will you please STOP scolding people like some stuck up head mistress please. The tags are needed because the data needs transferring later and coordinates. A high number of articles have a significant amount of text to translate too. God Jen the way you speak to people sometimes really patronises them. If you think we should create a geo category to avoid "swamping" then I suggest we do that. The difference between the French communes is that a lot of the French communes alreayd have the facts transferred. These don't as yet which is why it is important to have the tags to bridge the transfer of the data. A lot of the articles do actually have a significant amount of text. I'll assume good faith with your message but the way I read it on logging in I really didn't like your tone, it made me sound like a nuisance and some irritating bug on the ground and I won't be spoken to like that when I'm making a big effort to work on this.. Dr. Blofeld White cat 11:32, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

A lot of the articles I looked at on Czech wikipedia had decent content, photographs/important external links and brief history. No we don't have an army of czech translators but we do have some editors who can click the link and see the data and transfer it. If the content needs transferring frrom czech wikipedia then it shouldn't matter if it is 30kb or 3kb. I also looked on German wikipedia and a lot of the articles have good content on there. The articles DO need expanding from other wikipedias so the tags are not redundant. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:05, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

OK. Well I am happy to create them without the tags. If you can think of a way to prompt editors to transfer the data from Czech wiki I am all ears. The data DOES need transferring as do photographs and coat of arms etc. There is a lot to do so it is too daunting a prospect to transfer it on creation. No doubts I'll be going back and adding a lot myself. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:09, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

I've tried using excel and AWB before but I'm really not good with using outside packages as simple as they may seem to some people. Really these czech articles as the french communes and practicallty all other places should be started with a bot. As you are well aware that is a major problem. As there are so few editors concentrating on adding content enmasse from other wikis I'd like to trnasfer as much as I can at a much faster rate. We not only need a bot to create an entire list of missing articles from other wikis but we need something running to get them started. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:21, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes believe it or not I do know how to copy and paste thankyou very much. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:26, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

I've contacted Alexbot on Chinese wikipedia to add the links for me, his bot seems to running behind. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:27, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

So I figured. Dr. Blofeld White cat

The data would have to be transferred into the standard settlement boxes. All the data may not be needed but it would certainly help to transfer population, area, population density and coordinates and map/COA if possible certainly. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:33, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

The most rtelevant data on every article is located in the centre of the box as follows:

 • katastrální výměra: 9,05 km²
 • počet obyvatel: 211 (28. 8. 2006)
 • zeměpisná šířka: 50° 10’ 10’’
 • zeměpisná délka: 13° 33’ 2’’
 • nadmořská výška: 372 m
 • katastrální výměra =Area
 • počet obyvatel=population (usually 2006)
 • zeměpisná is the coordinates
 • nadmořská výška=Altitude

If you can do something where it copies the coordinates directly into the spaces in the infobox and the other data in the relative fields it should work. Each article follows a consistent format, this is why I know a bot could be doing it first time! Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:38, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Now see below where you would insert this set data everytime. You'll have to click edit on here to see the box clearly on seperate lines:

{{Infobox Settlement <!--See the Table at Infobox Settlement for all fields and descriptions of usage--> <!-- Basic info ----------------> |name =Děkov |other_name = |native_name = <!-- for cities whose native name is not in English --> |nickname = |settlement_type =Municipality and village<!--For Town or Village (Leave blank for the default City)--> |motto = <!-- images and maps -----------> |image_skyline = |imagesize = |image_caption = |image_flag = |flag_size = |image_seal = |seal_size = |image_shield = |shield_size = |image_map = |mapsize = |map_caption = |image_map1 = |mapsize1 = |pushpin_map =Czech Republic <!-- the name of a location map as per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Location_map --> |pushpin_label_position =bottom |pushpin_mapsize = 300 |pushpin_map_caption =Location in the Czech Republic <!-- Location ------------------> |subdivision_type = Country |subdivision_name = Czech Republic |subdivision_type1 = Region |subdivision_name1 = Central Bohemian Region |subdivision_type2 = District |subdivision_name2 =Rakovník District |subdivision_type3 = |subdivision_name3 = <!-- Politics -----------------> |government_footnotes = |government_type = |leader_title = |leader_name = |established_title = <!-- Settled --> |established_date = <!-- Area ---------------------> |area_magnitude = |unit_pref =Imperial <!--Enter: Imperial, if Imperial (metric) is desired--> |area_footnotes = |area_total_km2 =9.05 <!-- ALL fields dealing with a measurements are subject to automatic unit conversion--> |area_land_km2 = <!--See table @ Template:Infobox Settlement for details on automatic unit conversion--> |area_metro_km2 = <!-- Population -----------------------> |population_as_of =2006 |population_footnotes = |population_note = |population_total =211 |population_density_km2 = <!-- General information ---------------> |timezone = CET |utc_offset =+1 |timezone_DST = CEST |utc_offset_DST =+2 |latd=50|latm=10|lats=10|latNS=N |longd=13|longm=33|longs=2|longEW=E |coordinates_type = region:CZ_type:city |coordinates_display = display=inline,title |elevation_footnotes = <!--for references: use tags--> |elevation_m = 372 |elevation_ft = <!-- Area/postal codes & others --------> |postal_code_type = <!-- enter ZIP code, Postcode, Post code, Postal code... --> |postal_code = |area_code = |blank_name = |blank_info = |blank1_name = |blank1_info = |website = |footnotes = }}

Well it does feature the coordinates at the top of the page as well I think. Quadell is on holiday, I was ging to ask him about the defaultsorting. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:09, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Barnstar

I'm in awarding mode today, and realized I hadn't actually seen you get anything for doing all of that excellent work creating translation templates. So here's a little something for your troubles:

The Rosetta Barnstar
For streamlining and improving the series of expand-language templates that will make inter-wiki collaboration much easier, I award you this spiffy little paperweight, which hopefully will soon have a place on your desk. :-) --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 14:39, 13 July 2009 (UTC) Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:56, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Really, I thought I gave you a barnstar to also show my appreciation? Well I second it! Any thoughts what we should do about the czech tags? Maybe create some sub categories? You had a point about a lot of them not containing any real content, I must have looked at more developed districts, facts still need transferring, at least the reference points to the czech page now anyway. Dr. Blofeld White cat 10:33, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

You're welcome! And MANY thanks for taking those templates places, it makes the translation system SO much better! All we need is an army of translators of maybe 100,000 LOL. Look forward to seeing your holiday pics, have a great time! When do you leave? Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:56, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Awesome. My sister is going on three holidays during her six week teacker summer break ! She is off to Egypt tomorrow for two weeks. Then she is heading off to Japan for two weeks and doing a tour and then catching a plane to Beijing to start another trip across China and down to Yunnan!! Now that's what I call travelling!! Before you go be sure to check our Charlie Boorman's By Any Means on Youtube an episode or 2 was filmed with him travelling through India. What parts are you going too? I think northern Indian looks more stunning, be sure to visit Varanasi and Agra, not sure how north you are going but Lucknow, Leh and Srinigar looks amazing. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:27, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

There is a brief clip on here and some related ones like this of Varanasi, not sure if they have the whole episode. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:34, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Yeah the server problems suck big time I've been having trouble for weeks. I did complain at the village pump tech as did many others. Hopefully they will update the server after the recent fund drive. Luckily though it is not affecting images at the moment although a moment ago the wiki logo disappeared in the top right. Glad you liked the videos, if you are interested in general travel and adventures be sure to check out Boormans series Long Way Round with Ewan McGregor and By Any Means. I was particularly fond of their travels through Kazakhstan and Mongolia, stunning country. Actually in Long Way ROund in which they travelled from London to New York on motorbike they did travel through Alaska. Plenty of old fashioned men with lumberjack shirts, fisherman caps and mullets! Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:08, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Chuckle chuckle. Aint that true. I know they have a reputation for being red necks and lumberjacks but my parents visited Alaska last year and said just how true it was! The people seem nice enough but fashion and class isn't exactly very high on their list! My dad said the uniform for a guy was a grey/white or black t shirt with a lumberjack check shirt on top, a scruffy baseball cap and really timeless straight leg blue jeans, you know the types that mainstreet stores don't sell any more and can only obtain in thrift stores LOL. Kind a like Clooney and Wahlberg in The Perfect Storm. LOL here is Clooney doing his best Alaskan impression. LOL. Grrr I'm off to chop down some trees and arm wrestler the nearest bear. Raaa! Alaska is beautiful though for sure, even if its people are somewhat backwards in fashion. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:29, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

One small problem. Most of the articles which have full content are actually towns and cities not villages! Like Žlutice. Maybe change it to settlement? Would that mean much work? Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:24, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Muni is fine. Muchas gracias. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:34, 16 July 2009 (UTC) Hello mullet man lover. Any chance you could create some translation sub categories for the Netherlands? Dutch wiki as with German has a tremendous amount to transwiki. Today it is Dutch literature. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:22, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

One like France would be good, nothing huge yet just a number of writers. When I've finished that huge German list I'll generate a few Dutch ones. in fact if you said up som empty categories I'll try to fill them a bit. Delving into German and Dutch wiki is quite scary it has to be said. You know the typical chain effect where we not only don't have articles on national award winning authors but we don't in turn have articles on their novels which are on other wikis it multiplies into something astonishing. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:43, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

OK thanks. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:13, 18 July 2009 (UTC) The funny thing is that we actually left the Politiker ones till last and they still need starting!! Most are politicians so it should be OK. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:52, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Mmm a lot of wiki drama I'm afraid. I just think ignoring 99% of notable politicians from a country is also substandard. I honestly think we stand a better stand keeping them than deleting them. I just wish I could start them equally as fast with adequate details that's all. I can't exactly see the articles being Target No.1 for vandals in all honesty. I really don't know what to do about this transwiki thing I had considered proposing a new taskforce of missing encyclopedic articles and at least highlighting the missing articles needing starting on here but the way the recent discussions have gone I feel that people will reject it. I know referencing to another wikipedia is not ideal but I believed as I'm sure ALbert did that the fatc that most seemed referenced or external linked on the other wikipedia vthis would make them different from completely unsourced articles. I agree with you that the biggest problem was mixing a number of writers and members and labelling them politicians rather than BLP issues. If referecning to another wikipedia is not accpetable, why do we have templates one could ask? Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:25, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Well I'm about to say the hell with it all, frankly. I tried an experiment...it didn't work, and I'm OK with that. I'm less OK with some of the comments over at AIV...though as I haven't checked through them again today, perhaps there's been some mollification. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 13:31, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Yeah thats the way to deal with it Albert. Well the thing is that is the contradiction with these translation tags. We are asking the reader to translate information directly from German wikipedia and place the tags in the talk page yet content and sourcing from another wikipedia can never be taken as a professional source or regarded as reliable. I also don't think referecning to another wiki is really adequate, it is really supposed to be a sort of bridge to build upon what we have and find more reliable sources as the article is written. It is though a highly frustrating one have masses of information on other wikipedias and having barely a handful of people really interested in transferring it. There seems to be an argument that unless an articles is full with tons of references first time it is an inadequate start. I am willing to add more details to an extent but when faced with huge lists of missing articles I as any normal person would could not attempt to do the lot alone. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:41, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Excellent!! Hey when you visit India do you think you could take some pictures of the highways? We desperately need images of the national highways so wherever you go take some pictures! I'm sure there are rather more scenic things to photograph but don't forget!! Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:56, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Albert understandably has left wikipedia because of the nasty people at ANI. I almost left wikipedia too just a few months ago for exactly the same nasty attitude towards fellow editors on here. SOmething really has to be done about it as it has turning away our best contributors and decent people. I see very few people at ANI or the AFD either which assume good faith. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:01, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

I'd be extremely grateful if you could help expand any articles within List of German Christian Democratic Union politicians! Just a fact and a reference and birth dates will do. This would help greatly as I am practically single handely trying to add to them to salvage them from deletion. I'll try and fix as many as I can. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:08, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Some articles like Peter Deeg were expanded anway, I had hoped this would happen to all in time... Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:08, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

And again. There seems to many different people who are interested in these articles. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:19, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Alaska stuff

Hey there! I'm trying to get some input on Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, and someone suggested I ask you for your input. The ultimate goal is to get it up to FA, but I haven't even submitted it for GA yet, so there's a long way to go. Still, I like to get input and see if I'm on the right track with this. I'm not planning on adding any more sections, and my goal is to make it no longer than 100k. Any comments or concerns you have would be helpful. Thanks! JKBrooks85 (talk) 10:30, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Appreciate it. That'll give me some time to throw some more stuff in there. JKBrooks85 (talk) 20:07, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Gavin.collins

I appreciate your speaking to Gavin.Collins about his unwarranted call for a block of AlbertHerring. Unfortunately, I do not think it will change Gavin’s views at all. Gavin is very firm in his opinions and interpretations of policies, and does not change them no matter how many people show him he is wrong. Gavin is still firmly convinced his actions were right and the correct interpretation of policy. [2]

This is nothing new as Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Gavin.collins, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Gavin.collins 2, Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Kender and the associated links clearly show. Edward321 (talk) 22:21, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi. In light of recent events and community concerns about the way in which content is transferred I have proposed a new wikiproject which would attempt to address any of the concerns and done in an environment where a major group of editors work together to transfer articles from other wikipedias in the most effective way possible without BLP or referencing problems. Please offer your thoughts at the proposal and whether or not you support or oppose the idea of a wikiproject dedicated to organizing a more efficient process of getting articles in different languages translated into English. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:54, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

As you are generally good with articles on general country topics, perhaps you could start Constitution of Ethiopia? Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:52, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Very nice start thanks! I'll pass it on the Llyw, maybe he can develop it into a DYK perhaps! Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:49, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi, the Evil Doctor brought my attention to your contribution. It's someting I've been meaning to write myself, but have never had a large enough block of time to do so. You omitted some interesting facts:

 • Ethiopia has had four constitutions. The first written at the prompting & under the patronage of Emperor Haile Selassie in the early 1930s, & was modelled after the contemporary Japanese Constitution. In his Autobiography, the Emperor claimed this was the first constitution of any African country (although South Africa might disagree). J. Calvitt Clarke III of Jacksonville University has written some interesting papers on Ethiopian-Japanese relations, which are available online.
 • The second was adopted in 1955, modelled after the US Constitution, & provided for an elected legislature; Ethiopia had (more or less) free elections since 1955. However, the Ethiopian legislature had little power, & was more of a window-dressing to convince Western countries that Haile Selassie was a wonderful ruler, & to keep the Foreign Aid flowing. (Native Ethiopians are not as fond of him as we foreigner are.)
 • There was a third constitution adopted for the People's Republic of Ethiopia. Beyond obviously being based on Marxist theory, I know little about it.
 • The present constitution is perhaps most significant for organizing Ethiopia along Federalist lines: previous Ethiopian political thinking insisted on seeing the country as a single unit, & acknowledging the existence of numerous ethnic groups in the country was "backwards" or "unprogressive". Incidentally this constitution uses a Marxist approach in implementing its "Federalist" structure -- or so Sarah Vaughan, ("Ethnicity and Power in Ethiopia" [University of Edinburgh: Ph.D. Thesis, 2003]) argues.

Nice work!!. Sorry didn't mean to sound sexist on the proposal page just a rare occurence that's all, you know what I mean. At least I do have some help with German politicians anyway. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:25, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes I didn't mean to sound as if it matters whether an editor is a male or female, it is quite a novelty on here though to see two female editors conversing! Most places you go on here it is unfortunately dominated by males between 15 and 40. Anyway did you see Kotniski's recent edits with the Czech municipalities. It looks as if he is doing exactly as I had hoped for. At least that's one problem solved. Now, those blessed German politicians... Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:13, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Glad you agree with me. Once the project is started I am going to "spam" every active editor by language spoken a note of the new project and that their translation services are needed and would be welcome. The more people who know about it the better. Dr. Blofeld White cat 11:51, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Are you still here or what? Could you help get this new project up and running before you go visiting bearded bushmen and eating vindaloos? Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:35, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Wow that's a late exam. I've been having server trouble on here all day, even just minutes ago it was in read only mode. Somebody has suggested we go ahead and starting drawi ng up the project. To me though it would seem better to reignite one of the old project maybe ECHO and begin building it? Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:17, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Mmm if there are still some wounded old grannies still attached to the project maybe not a good idea. I got the impressio it was deserted but I don't want to take over it SPECTRE style and have a bunch of people causing arguments. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:20, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Before you go can you set up as many of the "main" categories from the expand templates aspossible, particularly the larger wikis and add the project links in the templates e.g "See .... for guidance". Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:35, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

The Ecuador Barnstar
Awarded to Jen as a token of my appreciation for her important work on topics in Latin America, particularly Panama and most recently Ecuador. Thankyou for helping fill in gaps. Himalayan 16:35, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your hard work the last day or two on Ecuador. The fact that those articles were missing is really embarrassing but not in the least bit surprising... Thanks... May you celebrate by klistening to this wonderfully tacky 90s track "Ecuador". And to think I used to listen to dance/hardcore rave music as a teen! Oh I have a request. Is it possible you could upload these free images the ones of on Tibetan and Qinghai/Sichuan are awesome. If you see the second image on my talk page of the stunning lake, that is one of his. P.S. hope you are feeling better! Himalayan 16:34, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Cool, did you have any photos to upload of India afterwards? I was looking forward to seeing your pics. I saw a few on flickr but not the hundreds I had expected.. I've been doing a lot of work recently on northern Indian monasteries (and Ladakhi kings). I finally got around to creating the infbox for Buddhist monasteries, see e.g Likir Monastery John and I recently wrote. I also managed to make a locator map for Tibet see Lhasa, although someday we will get some decent dvgs for all the Chinese provinces maybe... I found a history book on google books which has a detailed history of Ladakh, chronicles and all that, it is a very good way to identify missing content I think related to Ladakh. Did you go to Zanskar by any chance? I'm in love with this region. Himalayan 16:51, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Yep, you should count yourself very lucky that the people were very hospitable!!! Better than them being nasty! In some places, the people can be less welcoming.... Himalayan 19:30, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Updates to Caddie_(CAD_system)

Hello. I've made extensive changes to Caddie_(CAD_system), added some references, added a few facts, removed a bit of advertising :-) and removed factoids that I could not find references for. I also need your opinion on the features (see the article's Talk page). I used Caddie 4 when I studied civil engineering in 1992, but I'm not an engineer now, so I'm not the ideal person to write about Caddie's feature set. The article Wen Yunsong has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No evidence of notability, and having a famous relative isn't enough to make this person individual.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing dated prod will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. GiantSnowman 18:24, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Blu (artist)

Why did you delete the page for BLU? He is quite important in the Italian street art scene. He has been recognized by the Tate Modern Gallery in London as an "internationally acclaimed artist... whose work is intricately linked to the urban environment"(http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/exhibitions/streetart/). He has had a book of his work published and been featured in the publication Streetsketchbook created by the graffiti photographer Tristan Manco (who has a wiki page on him). Three of the other artists who were exhibited along with Blu have their own wiki pages (Francisco Rodrigues da Silva - "Nunca", Os Gêmeos and Faile). This, I find, is a highly irritating and inconvenient omission. Please rectify this soon. Good sources for making a page on him include - http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/exhibitions/streetart/, his own website (especially it's blog section) - http://blublu.org/sito/blog/ and he was part of the Italian Fame Festival, so - http://www.famefestival.it/?page_id=6. Castle image deletions

Howdy; I notice you've listed a few castle images for deletion (File:Delgatie_Castle.jpg, File:Fyvie_Castle.jpg). What I can't find is any information on what documentation is required to delist them - the db message states "This image or media has no source information. Source information must be provided". Can you give an example of what's required please?

I confess, I'd struggle to pinpoint the dates they were taken to the nearest decade, and the originals of some have probably been lost in house moves or eaten by months in the intervening years. I'm sure that even if I still own the camera on which they were taken it probably no longer works.

The original tag put on the image pretty much sums up all the information I have :( - TB (talk) 19:00, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

I would have liked to have seen more use of the talk page before some of the edits were made. At least one of the edit summaries was most unhelpful: "attributing the words of the book author to the atty, saying this argument made them take the case". I still can't work this one out. Most of the edits were certainly an improvement, but I would prefer to see more discussion, particularly when the article is a FAC. Best wishes, Graham. Perfectly notable model in Brazil, but I've decided to speedy it to save you "ganging up". Are these non notable models??? Oh and whats with the image deletion spamming? Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:34, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Its the way you went about it, I don't disagree that copyvio images should be deleted or that some models may not be notable. . I consider you a friend and to give a friend an automated style of image deletion messaging like you did the other day and then now to seemigly gang up on me by adding an unnecessary second tag on the article saying that the article is unwelcome is rather annoying.. On neither occasion you didn't speak to me, on both occasions I'd have gladly agreed. But the way you did it was in that top down type of way I in all honestly dislike coming from you or anybody else on here. In future if you must persist on deleting images and deleting articles I create please try to let me into the picture. I hope you are well. AFD the article if you want. I tried to delete a seemingly non notable Somali musician the other day and it got a resounding keep. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:11, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Nicholasbros.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Nicholasbros.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. SchuminWeb (Talk) 04:53, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

not mad at you

Hi, na I'm not mad with you, although I had hoped for a Christmas hug instead!! I was quite hurt that you didn't stop by to talk to me at Christmas but had the time to comment on that specific deletion that was all.. How is everything? Started your new job yet? Yeah some of the deletions I think are unwarranted but I have been doing a lot of BLP referencing myself and I think in a lot of cases we are right to delete them. See my discussion with Ser Amantio. But in my view it is based upon verification but also solid sources that exist on the topic. Unfortunately articles on traditional encyclopedic subjects are getting AFD'd which a quick google search reveals an abundance of sources and can easily be expanded is what annoys me. If the nominator gneuinely google searched and there genuinely is lack of sources or notability then I am more in support of them. But it is the cowboy admin nuke everything even innocent civilians approach which I find very concerning. It is a very lazy approach in my view. I think the alarm that we are about to be sued over contentious material is a little exaggerated but I do think we need to cleanup and delete a lot of material that is unverifiable or blatantly non notable. It is best we all chip in and go through this hughe list gradually and delete the obvious non notable material and keep those articles which would seem to meet guiselines and will be useful in the long term. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:51, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Tis OK. Thanks for doing that!! I did comment in opposition to MC bBrides initial proposal to nuke everything. See number 74. But I am unwilling to comment on all of the various other proposals, WHile discussion here is very important to ensure admins do not go on the rampage I think a lot of time would be better spent directly addressing the problem and working on reducing that list sensibly and productively... Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:54, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks I greatly appreciate that. Oh I'm sure most of mine will be kept, it is funny how many people have AFD'd my stubs and ended up being surprised afterwards and change their mind. This is because I rarely start articles on non-notable topics or unencyclopedic subjects. I'm currently making Template:Cantons of Ecuador and Ser Amantio is starting them all. Thought you might be interested! My productive output is reduced at present though as the BLP saving is priority but I am currently expanding all the communes of Benin and starting the arrondissements... Yeah I don't always get it right. But when you've created as many articles as I have there are bound to be a few duds or wires crossed somewhere!!
