Community de-Adminship - finalization poll for the CDA proposal

After tolling up the votes in the revision proposals, it emerged that 5.4 had the most support, but elements of that support remained unclear, and various comments throughout the polls needed consideration.

A finalisation poll (intended, if possible, to be one last poll before finalising the CDA proposal) has been run to;

  • gather opinion on the 'consensus margin' (what percentages, if any, have the most support) and

Thanks for closing my old nom. It's been pretty slow going there ever since Shoemaker's Holiday stopped editing. I'm pretty much involved with every nomination there, but if you're able to do any more closings/!voting, or know any other editors that could help out, it would be much appreciated. Thanks again! No problem. In the long run, I intend to code a bot that will automate the process. Also, I'll try to get more editors involved in the !votes, as activity has been "lacking" since Shoemaker's leave. Thanks, –blurpeace (talk) 20:17, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Webcam screenshots

Hi Blurpeace,

You left a message for me about a screenshot I uploaded, it's now included in the relevant article and is no longer an orphan.

I wasn't sure which copyright policy to choose, and would like to ask you about the policies - non-free use seemed the closest fit. I put a note up on Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags, I think a subcategory is needed specific to screenshots from a live webcam. The other categories (movies, music videos, television, and vodcast) are not a good fit for live video from a webcam, since (unless the owner is recording it) the stream is impermanent and not a pre-existing thing like a music video. Do you have any suggestions for a better copyright designation for the screenshot? NYEarthling (talk) 23:07, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. We've had some shakeups regarding late entries, flag changes and early dropouts, but the competition is now established- there will be no more flag changes or new competitors. Congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), our current leader, who, at the time of writing, has more listed points than Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) (second and third place respectively) combined. A special well done also goes to Isle of Man Fetchcomms (submissions)- his artcle Jewel Box (St. Louis, Missouri) was the first content to score points in the competition.

Around half of competitors are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. 64 of the 149 current competitors will advance to round 2- if you currently have no points, do not worry, as over half of the current top 64 have under 50 points. Everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places in round 2! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! hi, i just saw you converted a png logo i uploaded to svg. in the meantime i uploaded another one, if you don't mind, please vectorize it: File:Vila Isabel Futebol Clube c.png, and substitute the one on the wiki page.

how do i vectorize a logo?

ps- it cost nothing to credit sources. while it's nothing major, i still took some time to clean the logo and convert it from jpg. thanks, --Ben Stone 03:37, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Hello Ben Stone, though most vectorizations are done manually, I had done mine with automatic software. Though this method is more efficient, the output is usually of lower quality. That logo is too complex to be done automatically, so it should be left to a contributor with more expertise. Blurpeace 06:15, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
thanks. great stuff!--Ben Stone 06:26, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Spelling error in currency in James Baker American currency signature

I fixed the spelling error because it was wrong you put currencye in the image note of <image>. I recorrected it and spelled currency. This is the way you spell currency not currencye. --Enoxod (talk) 05:22, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Yes, I am aware of how one should spell currency. While I was moving my mouse over the text, I must have made a typo. Thank you for correcting it. Blurpeace 05:50, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Joel William Gonzales

Hi, I got here because since we both took part in the AfD discussion of this article [1]. There is currently an open SPI into the user that created the article. You mentioned in the AfD that he "has requested deletion in good faith over IRC" and I think any indications of his future intentions would be relevant for the SPI, so your insights would be valuable there. Thanks. Smocking (talk) 02:10, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Your Advice

See discussion here.

right, your advice may have some merit, but it's lovely the way you just dodged the point about "two to tango" and how Jeffro did not respect my wishes, yet he expects me to respect his.   Put all the onus on me.   Nobody's perfect.  Not Jeffro (or you) either.  Nor me.   But Jeffro has issues (with others too, as I've seen him on Talk pages....).   I've had no other issues with "civility" with any other person, basically, on SCORES of articles, as far as actual words, per se. (Except for maybe Sally, but she and Jeffro act as one a lot of times anyway.)   Even with the Evolution blog, I was able to communicate somewhat with some, even if not in total agreement.   (And some other editors and I are actually quite friendly.)   I'm just keeping it real and being frank.   No "incivility" intended per se.   Jeffro decided to chime in the other day with his nonsense, about something not even having anything to do with him.  And even after I removed his stuff (from my own talk page) he constantly put it back in.   How "civil" is that?   (or are you just biased too?   seems so)  Singling me out, Blur, is not only unfair, it's also just not honest or accurate.   (but it actually is not that big a surprise, I guess)  Peace..... .Sweetpoet (talk) 20:57, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

As this RFC closes, there are two proposals being considered:

  1. Proposal to Close This RfC
  2. Alternate proposal to close this RFC: we don't need a whole new layer of bureaucracy

WikiCup 2010 February newsletter

Round one is over, and round two has begun! Congratulations to the 64 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our first round. A special well done goes to Hungary Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70). Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points), Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points), Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.

Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup; thank you to all doing this last round, and particularly to those helping at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. wrong photo for Carl E. Taylor

Blurpeace,

Are you the person who linked the wrong photo of Carl E. Taylor (b. July 26, 1916, d. Feb 4, 2010) to the bio that was put up in Feb 2010?

The photo now showing is from 1936 for a Carl Taylor who was photographed by someone in the Farm Security Agency -- and is absolutely *not* the person in this bio. I know. I am Carl E. Taylor's daughter. My brother has tried to get this delinked & another accurate photo put in place.

If you did make this wrong link, could you please undo it?

thanks, Betsy Taylor Betsy Taylor 15:22, 29 March 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Betsy M. Taylor (talkcontribs)

WikiCup 2010 March newsletter

We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly. Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B. New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. Silviu Ionescu - Centralizing discussions

Please note I have moved the prospective article to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/2009 Singapore Romanian diplomat incident

This frees up the page Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/2009 Singapore Romanian diplomat incident, where we can discuss developments.

This hopefully avoids the problems of the various discussions split over several user talk pages.

The page title was changed following discussions and concerns over WP:BLP1E - further discussion can continue on the talk page.

improve an article

Hello, I am new in wikipedia and edited an article based on a german one. I saw on the article page a massage that I should rewrite this. Could you tell me which part of the article is not correctly and I have to change? I am not experienced, need some help. --Halinal (talk) 19:21, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello Halinal, can you please link me to the page that you are asking for me to look at? I am not sure of what you mean. Can you write your next message in German? Thank you. Blurpeace 00:28, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Tokaido image

Hello Blurpeace, I have come across File:Tokaido Nagoya factory.jpg, which is an image from Wikimedia Commons and has an 'ineligible for copyright and therefore in the public domain' description attached. The original image appears to be from here, with a clear copyright statement on that page. I am not sure how to proceed since the image is on Wikimedia Commons rather than Wikipedia, and I don't wish to create a new account. (I looked at Wikipedia's guide on possibly unfree files and it looks like I would have to create an account on Wikimedia Commons.) Would you be able to look into, or provide guidance, on this potential copyright violation, please? Thanks. Janggeom (talk) 00:21, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I have gone ahead and deleted the image. Also, since you already have an account on Wikipedia, just click on "my preferences" at the top-right of your interface, and then click on "Manage your global account" or "Merge this account" (not sure what it's titled). After that, you're automatically registered at all other Wikimedia projects under the same username and password. Blurpeace 00:33, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Interesting. I knew about unified logins, but since Wikimedia Commons didn't show up on the 'list of accounts unified' (when I did this some time ago) I assumed that I didn't have an account on Wikimedia Commons. Thanks for looking into the situation above and for your clarification on the unified accounts. Janggeom (talk) 00:39, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Sure. Now, about the image, unless it's a clear copyright violation or meets Wikimedia Commons's speedy deletion criteria, you should nominate the image at deletion requests. The process is a combination of the English Wikipedia's FFD and PUF. Hope that helps, Blurpeace 00:48, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Actually, it does look like it was there (or at least, it is there now), so I might have missed it before—if so, my oversight. Thanks again. Janggeom (talk) 00:50, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

File:Fiji Water logo.svg

Hi, I noticed that you uploaded File:Fiji Water logo.svg onto commons claiming pd-textlogo. THis only applies to logos from the United States and not from other countries like Fiji. Also the colouring and style in the "Fiji" is unusual, and not jsut plain text. Therefore I suspect that copyright does apply even in USA. However it could be loaded under fair use in en.wikipedia. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 11:57, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

"Commons accepts images of text in a general typeface and of simple geometric shapes, even if it happens to be a trademarked logo. Such images should be tagged with {{PD-textlogo}}. Any design which is an artistic work may be copyrighted, however," is what Commons:Licensing says. The 1999 Copyright Act of Fiji states in §2-1 "'artistic work' means a graphic work, photograph, sculpture, collage or model, irrespective of artistic quality." A graphic work is defined as "painting, drawing, diagram, map, chart, or plan." I do not believe it is a "photograph, sculpture, collage or model." Hope that helps. I should give notice IANAL. --Mikemoral♪♫ 19:01, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for answering Graeme, Mike; I had asked him to do so over IRC as I was busy at the time. Adding onto his response: colors are not original, per se, and it has been accepted that simple wordmarks are not protected by most countries' copyright laws. Blurpeace 19:47, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 April newsletter

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), our clear overall round winner, and to Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions) and Norway Arsenikk (submissions), who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive. I'm sorry, what claims of notability does BIHARI LAL BODYBUILDER profess? You might want to brush up on the speedy deletion criteria yourself. Everard Proudfoot (talk) 03:55, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Well, to quote the article itself, "He won gold in the Bejing common games in 2008 held in China, and also got an award of honor from Punjab chief minister Sh Parkash Singh Badal." If I'm interpreting that properly, that means he's been at the Olympic games in Beijing (which passes WP:ATHLETE). The awards under "Main achievements" only further that. Sincerely, Blurpeace 04:26, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
What are the Commons games? Everard Proudfoot (talk) 04:31, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
To be honest, I thought that was a bad translation for "Olympic games", but I was probably wrong now that I've closely reviewed the sources (and used a friend; bodybuilding isn't an Olympic sport). He's definitely notable to an extent (i.e., not CSD worthy), but I suggest bringing this to AFD. I'd rather not see the article deleted per BLPPROD. The article seemingly suffers from systemic bias. Blurpeace 04:59, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
I've notified WP:INDIA; hopefully they can assist in source collection. Blurpeace 05:24, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

OTRS work

Any chance you're willing to take a look at the cases in the WP:CP backlog which are pending permission? I've already compiled a list at User talk:NuclearWarfare#OTRS work and I'd much appreciate your help. VernoWhitney (talk) 18:40, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Taken from NuclearWarfare's talk page (diff).
Well, since I know you're active right now, I'll start with you if you don't mind. Whenever you get bored or have to work on something else, I'll go ahead and bother Blurpeace. I've listed all the ones in our backlog that have at least claimed permission to use, but of course there's no telling which ones have actually sent anything.
Your help is much appreciated! VernoWhitney (talk) 16:10, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
I'll followup on the Risk article, but, in the meantime, that should complete the articles that you've requested NuclearWarfare and I review. Sincerely, Blurpeace 01:50, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

Thank You. I do have one other request for you though, since you're the one that deleted it (and I forgot to mention it along with the list): according to the tagger, the Cooby Creek Tracking Station article was clean as of the 11 October 2008 version. Any chance you could restore that version of it? VernoWhitney (talk) 03:47, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
Done and no problem. Blurpeace 04:04, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for fixing the File:Roxanne, Roxanne excerpt.ogg to the version with the rational present. I'm still looking over how you did it and where I went wrong with this one, as it appears in one of my deletions of a previous version, had unintentionally managed to remove the rational that was present. Thanks again Blurpeace. Kindly Calmer Waters 14:56, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

No problem. The deletion script seems to bugger up on that page (don't know why). Sincerely, Blurpeace 01:26, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 May newsletter

We are half way through round 3, with a little under a month to go. The current overall leader is Hungary Sasata (submissions), who has 570 points. He leads pool C. Pools A, B and D are led by Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and White Shadows (submissions) respectively.

Two of last year's final 8, Sweden Theleftorium (submissions) and Iceland Scorpion0422 (submissions), have dropped out of the competition, saying they would rather their place went to someone who will have more time on their hands than them next round. On a related note, a special thank you goes to White Shadows (submissions) for his help behind the scenes once again. There is currently a problem with the poster, perhaps caused by the new skin- take a look at this discussion and see if you can help. The competition has continued to tick over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. Good luck to all! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. I wasn't sure if you were aware of it, but an earlier version of this image was deleted from commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Jennette_McCurdy_KCA.JPG) because it is a Getty image: http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/98093478/Getty-Images-Entertainment. I'm not privvy to OTRS discussions, though, so maybe that was worked out. --| Uncle Milty | talk | 23:18, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

AFC review tool

Thank you for your recent help at AFC. I noticed you closed the request manually and wondered if you had the AFC review tool. Your assistance at AFC is appreciated and this tool may interest you if hopefully you will continue to monitor AFC submissions for backlogs. Thanks for your contributions. My76Strat (talk) 18:46, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi My76Strat, I wasn't aware one existed. Please, drop a link. ;) Also, just FYI, I've been on AFC for some time. It seems like this message was crafted as a boilerplate for new editors. Sincerely, Blurpeace 18:56, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
I am not exactly sure what the "boilerplate" metaphor implies, but am inclined to believe you felt it was substitute text of an impersonal nature. I see that it is rather generic but nonetheless original text. I am the editor who is new to AFC, and welcome any advice you might impart to me in the future. With regard to the tool I think it matters which skin you are using. But I assert it is rather efficient opposed to manually closing your response. Cheers. My76Strat (talk) 19:14, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
In case you missed here is the advice from Chzz on how to activate the AFC tool for monobook: "Blurpeace importScript('User:Tim Song/afchelper4.js')"; If further technical information is needed Chzz at IRC would be a better source. Happy editing, and Sysoping. My76Strat (talk) 20:14, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

undue

Hey, if you are going to add an undue tag (or any critical tag) to a page, please start a discussion so that others can see what you are complaining about and address the issue. Thanks! 018 (talk) 04:07, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi O18, I've left a short rationale on the talk page. I hadn't initially written one because the action seemed uncontroversial. Sincerely, Blurpeace 04:39, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I think stating the obvious is a good thing for two reasons: (1) others might not see it, (2) if the article gets fixed in bits, then it is clear when it is close what the tag is about. 018 (talk) 13:06, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Woohoo

I can finally say now that I know how all those long complicated edit summaries get put in so quickly. Undo doesn't give such a detailed description and I always thought I had to add it myself after much labour, but now I finally know rollbacking is what does it. =) (In case you can't tell, I just did my first rollback after I was too late on my actual first attempt. This feature will be no problem for me and is MUCH quicker than undo. =D) CycloneGU (talk) 00:29, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

Seriously, though...I might end up taking a brief Wikibreak at one point, though hopefully not more than a day. It bugs me, but my g/f and I are finally splitting soon (at least in living arrangements unless a miracle happens). It's going to be one heck of a hard go for me...especially because I get the feeling now that my family isn't exactly in my corner NEmore. Oh, and I'm still unemployed. =/ Too bad you can't get paid to edit Wikipedia... CycloneGU (talk) 04:34, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

But...but...I have FRIENDS here! *sob*
Kidding, kidding. I know that's what Wikibreaks are for, and I've gone on my share of them unannounced. I don't intend to leave during the reviewing test because I am enjoying taking part in that discussion; on another note, I can now roll back spam with fancy edit messages in one click! =D Granted, I've only been able to do that once this evening...last few reviews I've had to accept them all. Guess that's a good thing. =) CycloneGU (talk) 05:51, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

Semi protection of articles on main page made by banned user

I disagree (obviously), the articles are created by a user banned from Wikipedia. If they go to the main page (and they could) then protection from new and anon. users seems a good idea. I do it routinely for pictures. However its not worth edit warring over (although it might have warranted a discussion) so lets hope you are right. Victuallers (talk) 17:39, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

So you are essentially saying that the page should be protected because...
  1. It was made by a banned user.
  2. It might at some point appear on the main page.
Neither are reasons for protection. If it is actually going to go on the main page, then maybe it can be protected, but if we were to protect things that might go on the main page, we'd end up protecting hundreds (if not thousands) of articles. --Deskana (talk) 17:45, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
...umm its in a queue to go on the main page .... and all of this authors previous offers went there and then went to the main page. I think your example of (if not thousands) was a bit OTT, typically only about 50 or so go every day. Anyway I'm happy to leave the risk with you and I hope you're right. Cheers. Victuallers (talk) 18:26, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
The protection policy states quite clearly that pre-emptive full- and semi-protection is not allowed, so I hope that you're not doing this. --Deskana (talk) 19:28, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

What is the best way to go about resubmitting a declined article for creation?

Prior to submitting the article for the band, Chicanery, I submitted a page for their album. Not knowing that the page for the band had to exist prior to the album page (the basis for declining the submission), I submitted the album page when I finished it, which was before my finishing the page for the band.

The declined album page is the only reverted entry that I have experienced, at this point, in my history of editing.

Since originally submitting, I have made some changes to the write-up for the album, and the infobox photo requires retrieval.

The declined submittal is at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Chicanery (album). What is the best way to go about resubmitting to Articles for Creation? Should I revise the original submission, or submit the revised copy as a first time submission? Could you possibly help me in retrieving the infobox image? Thank you for your help. WikiCup 2010 June newsletter

We're half way through 2010, and the end of the WikiCup is in sight! Round 3 is over, and we're down to our final 16. Our pool winners were Ian Rose (submissions) (A), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (B, and the round's overall leader), Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions) (C) New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) (D, joint), but, with the scores reset, everything is to play for in our last pooled round. The pools will be up before midnight tonight, and have been selected randomly by J Milburn. This will be the toughest round yet, and so, as ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Though unaffiliated with the WikiCup, July sees the third Great Wikipedia Dramaout- a project with not dissimilar goals to the WikiCup. Everyone is welcome to take part and do their bit to contribute to the encyclopedia itself.

If you're interested in the scores for the last round of the Cup, please take a look at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Round 3 and Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Full/Round 3. Our thanks go to Bavaria Stone (submissions) for compiling these. As was predicted, Group C ended up the "Group of Death", with 670 points required for second place, and, therefore, automatic promotion. This round will probably be even tougher- again, the top two from each of the two groups will make it through, while the twelve remaining participants will compete for four wildcard places- good luck everyone! Spirituality

Thank you for your note. I appreciate the need to keep articles neutral, which is exactly why I felt a need to edit an article that was very noticeably anti-God/Christian. It was very obvious that the writer had no understanding of Christian spirituality and was not able to define or represent it properly.

A note at the top of the page asked for more specific definitions of spiritualty from the various religions. I assumed that to mean that this was an honest desire for accurate representation of all the varying points of view concerning spirituality.

I do not assume to know or be able to express the spirituality of other religions or views. I leave that to those that hold other beliefs. But it is important that in defining and expressing Christian spirituality, knowing that the majority of readers are Christian, that the wording be accurate and not offensive to that belief system.

As it had been written, it was very offensive to Christians, referring to God as merely a "supernatural being" and seeming to use deragotory wording toward those that would hold such beliefs.

One must not forget that for Christians, Muslims, and Jews, God is our almighty Lord, not a mere supernatural being. It is insulting to read "spirituality" reduced to mere human emotion.

Further, how can one have an honest discussion of spirituality, and not include the original definitions?

I would hope that Wikipedia genuinely wants to be fair and neutral to everyone, and not hold Christians in disdain. Please allow us to express ourselves as everyone else is allowed to. I don't have time to spend correcting every error on the original article, so in some places, I put a warning that what has been written is not inclusive to every point of view - in particular, (the only religion I can attest to) Christianity.

Thank you again - Lisa

Ok - I see that you have already switched back things I'd taken much time to write and find documentation for. It doesn't appear that Wikipedia honestly wanted the veiwpoint of all religions. I won't waste my time writing again and I won't check back here again - You can keep your slanted view of spirituality. I've got things to do, and I will have to trust that most people find information concerning true spirituality from more reliable, unslanted sources. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.221.0.179 (talk) 08:20, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Although you may not check back for this response, we did indeed hear your concerns. When we write our articles, we devote specific sections to discussion the various religions' definitions of spirituality. By adding Christianity to the general sections, you've actually slanted the entire article towards that religion. Hopefully you'll understand that what you might consider "secular", we consider "neutral" and "fact based". If you would like more information on how to properly add Christian beliefs to the article, please feel free to reply underneath this message. Sincerely, Blurpeace 08:44, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

This excludes the sandbox and the users' own user space, as well as pages that were created in error (see G6)

WikiCup 2010 July newsletter

We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by Hungary Sasata (submissions) has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants (Hungary Sasata (submissions), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions)) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by New South Wales Casliber (submissions), who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Contributions to those discussions would be appreciated, especially concerning the flags, as next year's signups cannot begin until the flag issue has been resolved. Signups will hopefully open at some point in this round, with discussion about possible changing in the scoring/process opening some time afterwards.

Earlier this round, we said goodbye to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), who has bowed out to spend more time on the book he is authoring with his wife. We wish him all the best. In other news, the start of this round also saw some WikiCup awards sent out by Finland Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions). We appreciate his enthusiasm, and contestants are of course welcome to award each other prizes as they see fit, but rest assured that we will be sending out "official" awards at the end of the competition. We say goodbye to the six who fell at the final hurdle. Geschichte (submissions) only just missed out on a place in the final eight. Alberta Resolute (submissions) was not far behind. Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions) was awarded top points for in the news this round. Toronto Gary King (submissions) contributed a variety of did you know articles. Finland Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions) said "I'm surprised to have survived so far into the competition", but was extactic to see Finland in the semi-finals. Norway Arsenikk (submissions) did not score this round, but has scored highly in previous rounds. We also say goodbye to Ian Rose (submissions), who withdrew earlier this month after spending six weeks overseas. Anyone interested in this round's results can see them here and here. Thank you to Bavaria Stone (submissions) for these.

Signups for next year's competition are now open. Planning is ongoing, with a key discussion about judges for next year open. Discussion about how next year's scoring will work is ongoing, and thoughts are more than welcome at Wikipedia talk:WikiCup/Scoring. Also, TonyTheTiger is compiling some information and statistics on the finalists here- the final eight are encouraged to add themselves to the list.

Our final eight will play it out for two months, after which we will know 2010's WikiCup winner, and a variety of prizes will be awarded. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Socks

I suspect that User:Logicalthinker33 may be another sockpuppet of User:Jehonathan/User:Matrix356. The new account has appeared after the others were blocked and seems to have the same modus operandi. Is it possible to do a CheckUser, or should I wait to see how the new user pans out?--Jeffro77 (talk) 09:38, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

I'd suggest that you report the account to WP:SPI with associated evidence. I think it'd be best if other clerks reviewed the account as well. Blurpeace 04:03, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
There was some discussion about this issue initiated by User:Logicalthinker33, now at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive636#Please help. I remain unconvinced of the editor's veracity, but I'm prepared to see how things go in regard to the editor's future behaviour. Unless you would still recommend otherwise.--Jeffro77 (talk) 12:57, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Happy 10/10/10

Double Ten Day is, really, unrelated—but we don't appear to have a cool pic for this one

I suppose I should've timed this message at 10:10:10 too, but frankly, I can't be arsed. You know how it is.

Did you know... that tenten in Japaense writing are a little wiggly thing, a bit like a quotation-mark, which makes e.g. "ka" (か) into "ga" (が) or "fu" (ふ) into "bu" (ぶ) ?

So, take time out to have a bit of a giggle.

All the best, and 10-10 'till we do it again.  Chzz  ►  08:49, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi Roman! Thanks again for coming out to the fundraiser on Thursday. It was awesome to meet you, and hopefully we'll see each other again soon. In the meantime, if you need anything (from me personally or from the community dept. at the Foundation), please don't hesitate to ask. All the best, Steven Walling at work 17:21, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi Steven, no problem at all. It was my pleasure, really. I am highly appreciative of any evening well-spent. I suppose I share a similar sentiment in saying thank you too. Yours sincerely, Blurpeace 21:08, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

How's your Online Ambassador experience going so far?

Hi Blurpeace/Archive 2,

We're starting to get into the busy part of the semester for Online Ambassadors, and we want to check in and see how you're doing, what your opinions about where we are now, and any feedback you may have.

Please answer these questions either on my talk page or send them to me by email.

1. How many mentees are you currently working with?

2. Have you reached out to students who don't have mentors yet? If not, would you be willing to?

3. What do you think of the content of messages on the Google Group?

4. What do you think of the volume of messages on the Google Group?

5. Do you participate on the Google Group much? If not, what would make you participate more?

6. Are there any problems you've experienced so far?

7. Is there anything else Sage or the rest of the Public Policy Initiative team could do to make your experience as an Online Ambassador better?

8. Are you okay sharing your username with your answers to our Public Policy Initiative team, or would you prefer to remain anonymous?

Thanks for your feedback! --Ldavis (Public Policy) (talk) 19:25, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

student looking for a mentor

Hey! I just noticed a student who requested Protonk as a mentor, but Protonk doesn't want to take on any more at this time. Perhaps you could offer to mentor Tooholli (talk · contribs)? Let me know if you don't want to, and I'll ask someone else.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 17:55, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Sure, I can make time for it. Thanks, Blurpeace 22:59, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

two more?

Per recent discussions on the Ambassadors list, we're going to try out assigning mentors to some of the students that don't have one, beginning with Media, Politics & Power in the Digital Age. Would you be willing to mentor User:Mks12 and User:jrahaghi?

If so, please introduce yourself to each of them, perhaps along these lines:

"Hi! I'm Blurpeace, and I've been assigned as your mentor. (If you'd rather choose your own mentor or don't want one, just let me know; you can request a different mentor from this list of Online Ambassadors.)

I'll keep an eye on your edits as you work on Wikipedia for your class, and try to pitch in where I can. If you'd like any help or advice, please let me know."

After that, don't forget to update Wikipedia:Online Ambassadors/Mentors to list your mentees, and if you've reached your limit, move your entry down to the "additional ambassadors" section.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 19:05, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 October newsletter

The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to New South Wales Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists – White Shadows (submissions), William S. Saturn (submissions), Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) and Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.

Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is New South Wales Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is Connecticut Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.

The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! Online Ambassador selection process

Please share you views on the current version of the proposed Online Ambassador selection process, which the steering committee has recommended for adoption by the ambassadors program. Once we settle on a selection process, we can start recruiting more Online Ambassadors for next term (in which we will have more students, and the students will be more involved with mentors from early on).--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 15:26, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

Help with a project?

Hi Blurpeace, I am a UC Berkeley student trying to improve the quality of an article on "Patentleft," part of the Wikiproject United States Public Policy group. I am a little confused on how to do this and where to start finding sources and information about this topic. Any suggestions you have about this topic in general, where to find sources, and how to edit would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Tpka (talk) 21:08, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi Tpka and welcome to the project! To get better acquainted with editing Wikipedia, try our cheatsheet which can be accessed from the search bar by typing WP:CHEAT. I do not personally know the legal topic you are writing about but am happy to answer questions regarding the nature of Wikipedia (e.g., types of sources, encyclopedic style and policy). I suggest starting in the UC Berkeley library and expanding your search from there. However, some of your questions may be best answered by your professor or another qualified professional. Sincerely yours, Blurpeace 23:44, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
OK, I'll take a look at the cheatsheet page and the berkeley library. Thanks for your help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tpka (talkcontribs) 22:58, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

NYC Meetup: Saturday, December 4

We meet outside by the trees at 5:00 PM.

Our next Wikipedia NYC Meetup is this weekend on Saturday Dec 4 at Brooklyn Museum during their awesome First Saturdays program, starting at 5 PM.

A particular highlight for the wiki crowd will be 'Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958–1968', and the accompanying "WikiPop" project, with specially-created Wikipedia articles on the artists displayed on iPads in the gallery.

This will be a museum touring and partying meetup, so no excuses about being a shy newbie this time. Bring a friend too!

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

To keep up-to-date on local events, you can also join our mailing list.

Planning for next term in the Wikipedia Ambassador Program

Hi Blurpeace. We're trying to figure out how many students we can mentor next term and how many additional Online Ambassadors will be needed. Based on the revised plan for what participating courses will be like next term, I've sketched out what will be expected of mentors. Please look that over, and then go to the online ambassadors talk page to indicate much mentoring and other ambassador activities you'd like to do next term. Thanks!--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 18:06, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Mentor for team of students

Hi, my name is James Fullerton, and I'm a teacher at Southern Lehigh Middle School in PA. Recently I've created a project that involves Wikipedia (WP) and small groups of students making a contribution to a WP article of their choosing, as long as the topic is related to the content of the course - being American Government, Civics, and Economics. For the past 4 weeks, students have become involved in the culture of WP, with many already narrowing in on a topic for their contribution. Here is the supportive material on Wikispaces (https://wikiedit.wikispaces.com/). Your assistance would be greatly appreciated! Would you be available to act as a mentor to a small group of students as they begin to offer additional content to an article of their interest? The team sizes are numbered between 5-7 students each. I will notify you as to who is in the teams with their WP user names. Jmfullerton (talk) 17:35, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

To the Fir-Tree (Anonymous)

O Fir-tree green! O Fir-tree green!
   Your leaves are constant ever,
Not only in the summer time,
But through the winter's snow and rime
   You're fresh and green forever.

O Fir-tree green! O Fir-tree green!
I still shall love you dearly!
How oft to me on Christmas night
Your laden boughs have brought delight.
O Fir-tree green! O Fir-tree green!
I still shall love you dearly.

Also

Happy (belated) Hanukkah!

Happy Eid al-Adha!

Happy Kwanzaa!

Happy Festivus!

Happy New Year!

May this holiday season bring you the music of laughter, the warmth of friendship, and the steadying hand of love. Cheers! /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 04:56, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
