Scripts++ Newsletter – Issue 8

Administrators' newsletter – August 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2019).

Guideline and policy news

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • Following a research project on masking IP addresses, the Foundation is starting a new project to improve the privacy of IP editors. The result of this project may significantly change administrative and counter-vandalism workflows. The project is in the very early stages of discussions and there is no concrete plan yet. Admins and the broader community are encouraged to leave feedback on the talk page.
  • The new page reviewer right is bundled with the admin tool set. Many admins regularly help out at Special:NewPagesFeed, but they may not be aware of improvements, changes, and new tools for the Curation system. Stay up to date by subscribing here to the NPP newsletter that appears every two months, and/or putting the reviewers' talk page on your watchlist.

Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.

Hi Masumrezarock100, You recently commented on Wikipedia:Files_for_upload#Update_for_Seal_of_Washoe_County,_Nevada, Would you mind if I overwrite the seal as as can be seen here it's more used than their '07 one,
I thought it'd be rude to just upload without asking you so thought I'd ask before overwriting,
FWIW a few American articles have seals although admittedly I don't really know what purpose they serve but meh,
Anyway thanks, –Davey2010Talk 19:11, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

@Davey2010: I certainly wouldn't mind at all. I wasn't clear about licensing information, so I didn't upload it. Feel free to review the request. :) Masum Reza📞 20:33, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

French to English Translation

Thank you so much for your help! I appreciate your time. I think the best option is for me to go with a certified editor/host who can possibly translate the French page for me. Vespers of 1640

Selva morale ... is known as the Vespers of 1640 by whom? It's a great collection of much much more than vespers, - looks misleading to me, and I'd drop it altogether. It could be mentioned somewhere in the text, under legacy (which needs to come eventually). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:13, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: Now that you mentioned it, it does look misleading. I removed the text, but kept the link because I think it's related to the article. Masum Reza📞 14:19, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
I agree. Only after I wrote this did I notice that someone else wrote it ;) - Thank you for helping with the article, - a fascinating subject! I will learn to make short comments, to avoid edit conflicts. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:22, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

Supreme Wiki-service.

The GNU Barnstar
By the authority vested in me by myself it gives me great pleasure to present you with this barnstar in recognition of your uncanny sense of timing in replacing the non-PD cover of A Different Pond with a PD version just as I had started writing an explanation to the unfortunate, but now fortunate, nominator as to why they couldn't use it. Supreme Wiki-service - thank you. Gog the Mild (talk) 22:35, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
Hello Gog the Mild, Thanks for the barnstar and for your kind words. It means a lot to me that my contributions are appreciated by other editors. :) But I'd like to say that I didn't replace the non-PD cover with a PD version. The previous book cover was non-free and it was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. It wasn't certainly an "Own work ". So I nominated the copyrighted file for speedy deletion there. I uploaded another widely used cover here with appropriate fair use rationale as I couldn't find any free replacement. Masum Reza📞 22:59, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
Now you are baffling a poor, simple, content-creating editor with Wiki-jargon. Having read that twice, it still seems the semantic equivalent of what I said. You see why I am so happy that you stepped in. (Actually, I kind of understand, and that's what I was alluding to in my clearly over-simplistic message.) In any event, I am sure that your work is much appreciated; it's just that most editor's forget to tell you so. Gog the Mild (talk) 23:10, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

Natsuo moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Natsuo, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. PATH SLOPU 12:49, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

@Path slopu: Wait. It's a disambiguation (name index) page, that's why I didn't add any sources. It's like Itsuki. It's just a list. It doesn't need any sources. Would you mind self-reverting? Masum Reza📞 12:53, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
Hi greetings, sorry for the inappropriate move. I agree with you. I'll try to self revert it after the original page get deleted ( we can't perform a move when that page exist. This is for preserving the actual history of the page). I am not a page mover, so I can't swap pages' titles. So please wait for some time or approach any other user with page mover right. Please see Moving redirect pages, WP:MOR. Thank you.PATH SLOPU 13:17, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
@Path slopu: No worries. We all make mistakes. I already moved it back to mainspace. I don't have autopatrolled so I would like you to patrol the page. Thanks. Masum Reza📞 13:22, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

Hey, why don't it works? ‐‐1997kB (talk) 11:54, 10 August 2019 (UTC)

Well I am importing it to common.js, wouldn't that will work? I have FR's undo installed in common.js, which works fine. Wondering if it's possible to make it common.js compatible. Thanks :) ‐‐1997kB (talk) 15:08, 10 August 2019 (UTC)
@1997kB: The thing is, Mobile scripts sometimes load unreliably if loaded in skins other than Minerva. That's why I made it only minerva compatible. I will try to make it compatible with common.js. But for the time being you need to move this script to your minerva.js to use it. Masum Reza📞 15:20, 10 August 2019 (UTC)
Thanks! I will wait for that. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 15:22, 10 August 2019 (UTC)

Still not working. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 04:38, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
@1997kB: Unexpected. I am importing it using my common.js and it works fine. What browser you are using? Have you purged your cache? Try visiting a random article using the mobile website and scroll to the bottom and wait for the script to load. It only works on minerva skin. Masum Reza📞 04:46, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
@1997kB:You have the wrong code in your common.js. Please uninstall and install it again. Masum Reza📞 04:49, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
You currently have this code in your common.js.
importScript('Masumrezarock100/mobilemorelinks.js'); // Backlink: [[Masumrezarock100/mobilemorelinks.js]]
It should be
importScript('User:Masumrezarock100/mobilemorelinks.js'); // Backlink: [[User:Masumrezarock100/mobilemorelinks.js]]
. This was the real problem from the very beginning. I am embarrassed that I didn't notice it. Masum Reza📞 04:59, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
Ah, bug with ScriptInstaller. Thank you for help! ‐‐1997kB (talk) 05:54, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

Information icon Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.

Edit summary content is visible in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. You can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → Tick Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. Thanks! Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 00:17, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

@Kudpung: Thanks for informing me. What edit are you referring to? I usually give edit summary when making non-minor changes to articles. If you are talking about my edits to talk pages, I have to say that I don't usually give edit summary when replying because I see no point. Masum Reza📞 00:41, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
This is a classic example of why a ES is necessary. Not using edit summjaries is just lazy and unhelpful. That's why we have the template message above. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:35, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
@Kudpung: I admit that I am lazy, lazier than anyone else. The diff you mentioned is of a reply. What or what kind of edit summary I should use? It would be helpful if you tell me. To be honest, flow talk pages are much better in my opinion since it doesn't have a field to write down an edit summary. Masum Reza📞 01:42, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
Where it's helpful is where people are working from their watchlists or from page histories. It saves having to load the page to find out what the edit was about. A quick glance at this may give you an idea. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 04:15, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
I see. I don't usually edit via computer and when I do, I use WP:WIKI+. The source editor on mobile doesn't remind you to give an edit summary nor Wiki+. I will try to give edit summary from now on. Masum Reza📞 05:03, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

Using OOUI themes Apex and WikimediaUI together

Hey, I saw your question on IRC earlier about OOUI themes. Unfortunately it is not possible to have widgets using both themes on a single page at the same time – the CSS required for the other theme is not loaded at all, and if you were to load it, they would conflict (styles for both themes would apply together). The only way to use a different theme is to switch to a different MediaWiki skin in your preferences (Apex is used by MonoBook, and WikimediaUI by all other skins). Thanks

Many thanks for the edit summary, I've gone ahead and added the FFU template to file talkpages of all accepted files,
That'll teach me for not reading the page!,
Anyway thanks again, –Dave | Davey2010Talk 22:23, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

In regards to this - I don't mind adding FFU templates (as required) but I'm not going to be adding all Wikiproject templates ,,,, You're more than welcome to add these yourself but as per FFU there is no requirement to add these - I used to close AFDs regularly many moons ago but was never expected to add any Wikiproject templates.... same applies here, Thanks. –Dave | Davey2010Talk 22:37, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
@Davey2010: Thanks for doing adding ffu templates. :) Adding WikiProject banners to the talk pages, is not a requirement, but it is helpful when someone lists the file for discussion on FFD. AAbot will include the file name in WikiProjects' article alerts page and it will attract more editors to the discussion. Also when you upload a file on Commons, try to include a permanent link to the FFU page, like I did here since you are uploading the file on someone else's behalf. It is helpful for finding the upload requester. Again, it's also not required. Masum Reza📞 22:44, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

Newsletter • August 2019

Welcome to the fifth and final issue of the Timeless newsletter!

Progress was made. True story.

I am happy to announce that after about a year, this delightful project in which absolutely nothing has gone according to plan is coming to a close. Or at least, the grant-funded portion is. Which means we will now be resuming our regular schedule of random whims-based development, you probably won't notice any difference whatsoever unless you use MonoBook, and there's a report.

What's new from the past two months:

A lot less than we'd hoped, frankly. We:

We also wound up with:

  • Patches resulting in RelatedArticles working in MonoBook, and FlaggedRevisions showing up in Minerva, unless someone actually managed to turn that off as well. (Blame T181242.) It's possible we went a little overboard with the whole 'let's close all the tasks!' sprint.
  • An unfortunate repeated discovery that themes (the Night/Winter variants I keep insisting will happen at some point) are still pretty far off on the horizon. Um.
  • Possibly a quite a few more bugs coming your way. This month, and especially the past week, have been a bit of a mess, development-wise. While hopefully none of the worse issues make it to production, please keep the reports coming for whatever you do find and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can. Y'all've been amazing about this, and it's really appreciated.

And I guess that's that. I'm really bad at reporting, and this is a report. For the purposes of the grant, this was a requirement, but do you want me to keep trying to send these out?
