Welcome

[edit]

Hey AKlapper, I just thought I'd drop by to welcome you. If you feel like diving into the unpaid side of Wikipedia and need any assistance just let me know on my talk page. Ryan Vesey 14:10, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Heja Ryan, thanks, already there a bit, with my private account: --Malyacko (talk) 14:20, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Search issue

[edit]

Have you been able to replicate my search problem? Is this something a bugzilla could fix? Ryan Vesey 04:57, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ryan, I don't know off my head what your search problem is as I read hundreds of issues per day. A link or a reference would be very welcome. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 11:14, 15 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Search index not updating (Sunday, March 24)

[edit]

Just pinging you to take a look at the end of the section Village pump (technical)#Search index not updating, where it is pointed out that the search index did not get updated today, either. Chris the speller yack 17:24, 24 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I was pinging you because at WP:Village pump (technical)#Is there any way to contact the operations folks at WMF? I discussed why I was disinclined to register at Bugzilla and expose my real email address to all Bugzilla users. Sumana Harihareswara said I could ping you and you could get something copied into Bugzilla. Then you say that I should file a Bugzilla report. Round and round I go. Is there not a live person at WMF who watches what's going on and can notify a high-powered person such as yourself if the search index update does not complete within a specified time? Chris the speller yack 03:02, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Short version: I've created bugzilla:46530 now. :) Long version: I can certainly copy some stuff to Bugzilla, but at some point it won't scale anymore so I encourage anybody first to get a Bugzilla account. With regard to public email addresses, the Create Account page warns "We recommend using a secondary account or free web email service to avoid receiving spam at your primary email address". There's no dedicated person to "watch what's going on" - nearly everybody tries this, in forums, on IRC, mailing lists, with statistic tools like Ganglia or Icinga etc., but there are still some areas where monitoring does not exist or could be better unfortunately - this is being worked on (bugzilla:43449 is just one example). And if you quickly want to talk to the operations team I'd recommend the #wikimedia-operations channel on IRC. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 09:44, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Re-reading the "Contact the operations folks" thread I don't see where Sumana said that I'd copy things to Bugzilla, by the way... :) --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 09:54, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, found it down there in another comment now. Sorry for the noise, still waking up on a Monday morning. :) --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 09:57, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Browser

[edit]

Hi Andre
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my query. As I said originally, I have Internet Explorer 10 on this (new) computer and had IE 7 or 8 on the old one. More than that, I don't know.

RASAM (talk) 16:04, 7 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'd really recommend to try another browser then to see if it's the browser or the connection. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 09:42, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I also had problems playing videos on this site with IE, so I changed to Mozilla Firefox (forgot to tell you), that seemed to sort it out; looks like I might have to change again - maybe that will do the trick. Thanks for the advice. RASAM (talk) 21:15, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Search index not being updated on en.wikipedia

[edit]

Andre, could you check on this? I am not registered at Bugzilla, out of privacy concerns. You were helpful in March 2013, and the updating has worked OK until about 5 days ago. Many thanks in advance. Chris the speller yack 19:05, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris the speller, this would require clear steps to reproduce first, see mw:How to report a bug. (Plus if it is a problem to create a throw-away email address and then use it to register on bugzilla.wikimedia.org, User:NEverett (WMF) would be a good contact as he works on Search). --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 14:17, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Redrose64: Yeah, I realized afterwards. I wanted to edit another (newer) comment instead which refers to that archive. I have no idea what the policy is about archived page. I'm happy to revert my change, I'm also happy leaving it there as it provides a pointer to the corresponding bug report. See Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Inability_to_select_on_Diacritics.28.3F.29_in_Category:Redirects_from_Unicode_characters

It appears that when Diacritics are in this category, that they can't be directly selected. I don't know if the web browsers are somehow combining them with following characters or what else is happening. User:WhatamIdoing (WMF) agreed that it is an issue and suggested that I contact you with how to follow up with this.Naraht (talk) 15:37, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Phabricator

[edit]

Hi. Regarding your comment on phab:T99455: "could @Meno25 log in via Wikimedia's SUL and access https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/email/ to change the email address and add a new one?" I can't. It gives me the error "Must verify Email". --Meno25 (talk) 08:37, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Meno25: I've renamed and disabled your Phabricator account. Please see phab:T99455#1358803. Can you please try to create a "new" account in Phabricator? If that does not work I'll delete the account in Phab entirely (once I've received sufficient permissions on that machine). --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 22:58, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Not working. It gives me the error "Login Failure
Login cookie was set correctly, but your login session is not valid. Try clearing cookies and logging in again." Clearing cookies and trying again does not work. So, please, delete the account. Thank you for taking the time to help me. --Meno25 (talk) 17:31, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Meno25: Uhm, I am sorry, this is bad timing as that is another bug that currently hits us. That login cookie problem is phab:T102276 which will get fixed next Wednesday 23:59UTC on Wikimedia Phabricator. Could you wait these 3-4 days and then try again on Wednesday or Thursday (depending on your timezone)? Again, I'm sorry. Sigh. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 13:18, 14 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, sir. I will wait for the other bug to be resolved and try again. Best wishes. --Meno25 (talk) 06:46, 15 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Meno25: Could you try, now that the cookie problem should be worked around? --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 09:06, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for pinging me. Unfortunately, it is still not working. It gives me the error: "Account Disabled Your account has been disabled." --Meno25 (talk) 15:02, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Meno25: Could you elaborate what "it" is? Did you try to create an account named "Meno25"? If yes, after which steps do you get that error message exactly? --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 15:48, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
According to the instructions in mw:Phabricator/Help#Creating_your_account, I went to the login page and clicked "Login or Register Mediawiki". It prompted me to give my permisiion to phabricator-production and upon allowing it, it gave me the above error. It redirected me to this URL. --Meno25 (talk) 16:23, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Meno25: Meh, makes sense. :( I've commented on phab:T99455 and CCed two folks who should be able to delete the account... --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 16:30, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, sir, for your work. I am sorry that I have wasted a lot of your valuable time. Best wishes. --Meno25 (talk) 16:42, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Meno25: No no, you really did not waste anybody's time here. I am rather sorry that this is more complicated than it should be and that it takes so long and that I could not help faster. We are still trying to make our processes a bit smoother. :( --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 17:30, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Meno25: Could you send Mukunda (see Mukunda's userpage for his email address) your email address which you used in Phabricator, in order to fix your account? See Mukunda's comment in phab:T99455#1379905. Thanks! --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 11:27, 19 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, sir. I sent an email to MModell using the email address on his userpage stating the email address that I used to register in Phabricator. I also left a note of the email address on my talk page. --Meno25 (talk) 14:03, 19 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, AKlapper – Yesterday I received an e-mail from you regarding "T124929: Fix bug in edit window using Chrome". Please refrain from unconstructive comments

[edit]

phab:T307851#7916579: @AlexisJazz: Please refrain from getting personal and keep things constructive. Thanks.
Did you already forget phab:T307851#7912034?? (double question marks! aaaargh!) You are not helping to keep things constructive. You're not de-escalating either. Maybe you think you are, but with comments like these (and you post these on a regular basis) you're really not.
And neither is Jdlrobson. They closed the task as a duplicate of phab:T173527 which is not even remotely accurate. Such closure, if I wasn't as assertive as I am, would mean the task would be extremely unlikely to be picked up, even less likely than it already is. That's just plain disrespectful towards me as a volunteer trying to help. So take your trout to Jdlrobson. Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 09:37, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Alexis Jazz: The community-written etiquette asks to criticize ideas, not people. Getting personal is plain disrespectful towards other humans who want to help by first trying to understand what the actual underlying problem to solve is (and that requires either good initial task descriptions or will require some followup questions), what a user actually wants to achieve (and not only what they don't want to achieve like listed in the aforementioned task), and which potential approaches might be realistic or not. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 10:13, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Still not de-escalating. If you're no good at de-escalating that's totally fine, but in that case focus on development and stop pointing fingers because it's counterproductive. Also, Just stop saying it can't be done and start thinking about how it COULD be done. is not a personal attack. A little coaching and expression of minor disappointment maybe, but no attack and at any rate not even remotely as offensive as what Jdlrobson did. Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 10:23, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not paid?

@AlexisJazz: I merely provided pointers that anyone interested in getting this issue closer to getting fixed could pick up if interested, as this ticket and our code bases are public. Thanks for sticking to technical aspects in the issue tracker.
You username has "(WMF)" appended to it, you have an @wikimedia.org mail address and mw:User:AKlapper (WMF) says "I work for or provide services to the Wikimedia Foundation" but you're not paid? I'm quite confused now. If you're not paid, why do you have a (WMF) username, what does it signify? And how can paid and unpaid developers be told apart? I always thought "(WMF)" meant paid. I'm guessing most people would. Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 18:10, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
