Fritz Rentrop

[edit]

Fritz Rentrop was an SS officer in WW2. He was born on November 19, 1917 in Münster Stadtkreis Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany and died Feb. 2, 1945, in Hungary.

He joined the Nazi Party on January 1, 1936, and was given Party membership #3708280. Nine months later, on October 30, 1936, he joined the Arbeitsdienst (Labor Corps). Six months later on March 1, 1937, he joined the SS as an enlisted man and was assigned SS membership 3323804.

Rentrop was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for assaulting and capturing a railway bridge across the Desna River near Makoshino, Russia, with only four soldiers of his unit (2nd Battery/SS-Flak-Abteilung 2 "Das Reich" Division). Rising in rank to Sturmbannführer (Major), he was assigned as 1st Staff Officer of IV. SS-Panzerkorps. On February 2, 1945, he was seriously wounded and ultimately captured by the Red Army in Hungary. He was never seen again and it was assumed he died of his wounds or was executed by the Russians. His remains have never been found.
