Definition: Civil Rights vs. Civil Liberties vs. Political Rights

Civil Liberties are freedoms from the intrusion on individual by the government. They limit the power of the government. The Magna Carta and the Bill of Rights are early examples of documents that limited the governments power and thereby insured the freedom or civil liberties of the individual.

Civil Rights are rights or freedoms guaranteed to groups against non-government actors. Political rights guarantee the individual the opportunity to participate in government and influence the government's decision making process. Examples:

Civil Liberties; Civil Liberties are about limitations on the goverment to restrict the freedoms of the individual. The Magna Carta was a declaration that protected individuals from the power of the King. The Bill of rights
