Gambia

India

Indo-Gambian relations entails the diplomatic relations between the Republic of The Gambia and the Republic of India. Both countries have historically good relations due to common roots of Non-Aligned Movement, United Nations and The Commonwealth.[1] India is represented in The Gambia through its Serekunda consulate.[2] In February 2009, The Gambia opened its first resident diplomatic mission in New Delhi.[1]

Bilateral trade

[edit]

Bilateral trade between the two countries have been increasing. India exports cotton yarn, fabrics and garments, cosmetics/toiletries, drugs and pharmaceuticals with semi-finished Iron & steel products to Gambia. Gambia exports groundnuts and raw cotton to India.[1] In 2006 Mahindra Tractors, India's largest tractor manufacturer, entered in an agreement with Government of Gambia to supply tractors and spares parts.[3] Mahindra also has plans to setup a satellite assembly plant in Gambia to support its Africa operations.[4] On technology side, an Indo-Gambian initiative to electrify Gambian villages with solar panels was done by Barefoot College.[5] Another initiative between The National Environmental Agency of The Gambia and Indian Embassy in Banjul also help light four villages in Gambia.[6]
