Bennet Chukwuogo Etiaba ‘Ifennia Nnewi and Ezechikwadolu 1 of Ukpo Ancient Kingdom[1] was born at St Mary’s Missionary Hospital Anua, Uyo, in the old Aba Province of the then Eastern Region of Nigeria now known as Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria, on Friday September 20, 1963. He is the first of six children of Nigeria’s first female Governor, Her Excellency Dame (Dr) Virgy Etiaba CON[2][3], and her legal luminary husband Bennet Madubugwu Chukwudifu Etiaba Esq. (BMC Etiaba) of blessed memory.

Early Life and Education

[edit]

The young Bennet started his Primary School education during the civil war in 1968 at Inyaba Central School, Umudim, in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State. Following his graduation from Primary School in 1974, he spent one term at Oraifite Secondary School in the year 1974, and proceeded to Okongwu Memorial Grammar School in Nnewi in 1975 to complete his class one and class two in secondary school. As transfers in the mid 1970’s took his father to various towns, BMC Etiaba who was by 1976 a Chief Magistrate, enrolled Bennet Jr. into National Grammar School Nike Enugu at Class 3, to complete his Secondary School education. By the year 1978, Bennet had showcased enough leadership skills at National Grammar School Nike that he was appointed the class prefect in his final year in the school, despite being one of the youngest and smallest students in size, in his class 5c then. Bennet then sat and comfortably passed all his 8 ordinary level subjects entered in that sitting, except for Economics that was cancelled by West African Examination Council (WAEC) for every student of National Grammar School at that examination of June 1979.

Upon leaving Secondary School in Enugu, he attended the School of Basic Studies, Institute of Management and Technology IMT Enugu, Nigeria from 1979 to 1980, and further spent the years preceding his sojourn abroad at the School of Arts and Science in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State where his Accountancy preparatory studies led him to what was then also known as Basic Studies at that School.

In October 1982, Bennet boarded the then Nigeria Airways and left the shores of Nigeria to study Accountancy in London, England. It was in the same city of London that Bennet’s father trained as one of the foremost Lawyers of Igbo land in the 1950s. In England, he commenced his preliminary studies that were to later earn him the requisite qualification as a Chartered Accountant, at West London College. There, studied from 1982 to 1984 passing all papers he took in the various stages of the examinations of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Career

[edit]

Accountancy

[edit]

As his training and studies progressed, Accountancy Tutors (later Emile Woolf College of Accountancy), London, England, United Kingdom became the next institution of professional Accountancy training that he attended between 1984 till 1987. By the summer of that year 1987, he was ready for the final stage and the final qualification examination of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Tragedy however struck that summer of 1987, with the unexpected death of Bennet’s beloved father BMC Etiaba Esq. on Saturday, the 13th day of June 1987. The shock of his hero’s death was to have a most profound and fundamental effect on him at the age of 23 years. Bennet returned home for the first time (since leaving Nigeria in 1982), to bury his much loved father and role model. After BMC’s funeral and upon returning to London, Bennet took a most fundamental and radical decision to have sustained gap years from full time education, to rather embark on full time employment in order to help cushion the effect of the financial loss of the family’s Patriarch.

He returned to accountancy studies in the autumn of 1995 to take the final examination of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants ACCA after his gap years, and passed this final examination at that sitting, thus qualifying as a Chartered Accountant that December 1995. Following this qualification, Ben went on to achieve the Associate membership status of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants ACCA a year later (1996), and went further to passing all his papers at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) from his United Kingdom base, thus achieving the Associate membership status of ICAN in the year 1998.

By the following year (1999), Ben completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration at the South Bank University London. Two years later (2001), he became an Associate member of the British Institute of Management Consultancy and recorded impressive feats in his chosen field, leaving immense indelible marks in Accountancy Practice in England by becoming a Fellow (in record time) of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA) in the year 2001, and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria ICAN (FCA) in the year 2003.

Ben’s enviable employment and self-employment record in England and Nigeria can be detailed as follows; from February 1985 to March 1992, he was a Bookkeeper at Sloane Services UK Limited. His output, integrity, and transparency were so clearly demonstrated that from April 1992 to September 1994, he was promoted to the position of Finance Officer at Sloane Services UK Limited. From October 1994 until July 1995, he was the General Manager (Finance) at Sloane Services UK Limited, and between July 1995 and October 1999, he was the Finance Director at Thames Valley Services UK Limited (the parent company to Sloane Services Limited) based in London England, with overall responsibility for the company’s financial operations.

After serving the same group of companies for more than 9 years in a row, Ben felt no further challenges left there and so decided to go into full time professional Accountancy Practice, joining Delbau & Co as a Partner from November 1999 to August 2001. He was the Management Consultancy Partner at Delbau & Co (United Kingdom) Chartered Certified Accountants, Registered Auditors, Taxation & Management Consultants. By September 2001, he took the decision to establish his own Accountancy Firm in England and with this came the founding of Ben Etiaba and Co. From September 2001 till December 2007, he was the Principal Partner at Ben Etiaba & Co (United Kingdom) Chartered Certified Accountants, Taxation & Management Consultants, one of the fastest growing Accountancy Firms in London with a huge portfolio of clients at the time. This Firm became Consultants to Riggs & Co International Private Bank in London from 2001 to 2005, Barclays Private Bank (United Kingdom), Consultants to Nigeria from 2001 to 2007, and HSBC Private Bank (United Kingdom), Consultants to Nigeria from 2003 to 2007.

Having decided to return to Nigeria after 25 fruitful years in England principally to raise his young family at home with African values system, he immediately established the Nigeria version of his United Kingdom Practice and with this, Ben Etiaba and Co Chartered Accountants, Registered Auditors, Taxation and Management Consultants, was established with offices in Enugu, Abuja, Lagos and Nnewi, in January 2008. This Chartered Accountancy Firm to date has carried a huge portfolio of high net worth clients and Ben serves the Firm as the Principal Partner. Ben Etiaba has over the years, remained a major Boardroom player both in England and in Nigeria.

Ben serves or has served on the following Boards: Chairman, Gallery Publishers Limited 2008 to 2021; Chairman, Aquila Leasing Limited Board Audit Committee 2015 to 2019; Chairman, Breast Without Spots Cancer Trust Fund Since 2017; Member, Board of VOOM Foundation in Texas USA 2018 to 2021; Chairman, Aquila Capital Limited from 2018 to 2021[4]; and Member, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Foundation Board of Trustees since 2022.

Sportsmanship

[edit]

A consummate sportsman, Ben was a football goalkeeper during his secondary school days, and also a volleyball Captain of two different schools years ago. Between the years of 2011 to 2013, he was the Vice Captain of the Golf Section of Enugu Sports Club and won the election to lead the Golf Section as Executive Captain in 2013, reelected unopposed to a second term in 2014. Following two successful tenures as the Golf Captain, Ben became the Vice Chairman of Enugu Sports Club in 2015 and was returned as the Club Vice Chairman in 2016 to a second term and then went on to become the Chairman of Enugu Sports Club in a hard-fought election in 2017[5]. He won this election to lead the prestigious Enugu Sports Club founded in 1929, with an unprecedented 92% of the total votes cast in that election, to defeat two other candidates.

Frustrated about the dearth of ethical leadership in Nigeria resulting in the present status of the country being in a political, social, and economical coma, Ben who was previously perceived as very apolitical despite coming from a known political family in Nigeria, decided to, and admirably contested the Anambra State Governorship election of 6th November 2021 [15] in such a refreshing manner that did redefine the standards of ethical political campaigning in the country going forward.[16] [17] [18]

Chief Ben Etiaba concerned about the the lack of integrity, transparency, and accountability in leadership roles and governance in Nigeria decided to throw his political hat into the ring in Anambra State and contested the Anambra 2021 Governorship election in the Primaries of the All Progressives Congress in Nigeria. [19]He eventually became the Governorship candidate of the Action Alliance in that election, following which he returned to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in December 2021 after the election of Professor Chukwuma Soludo of APGA as the winner of the election.
