The Battle of Kupiansk was an armed conflict between Ukraine and Russia. As part of the 2022 Ukrainian Kharkiv counteroffensive, Ukrainian forces advanced on the town and liberated it on 9 September 2022.

Background

[edit]

On the 27th of February, Kupiansk was occupied by Russian forces advancing towards Izium, Balakliia, and Kramatorsk-Sloviansk.

After its failure in the Battle of Kharkiv, several Russian units relocated to the Kupiansk area.

Kupiansk, an important railway junction, was vital to Russia for supplying its military base in Izium, and its brigades in Balakliia, Lyman, and other settlements. This made it an important target for further Ukrainian operations on the Northeastern Front.

On the 29th of August, 2022, Ukraine began a seemingly diversionary counteroffensive in the Kherson Oblast, likely attempting to draw Russian forces from other oblasts. With Russian forces focused on Kherson, on the 6th of September, Ukraine began a new offensive in the Kharkiv Oblast, with attacks on Balakliia, Shevchenkove, and Izium. On this day, Ukraine reported that Kupiansk was under “constant shelling.”

By the 7th, fighting was reported on the outskirts of Kupiansk.

On September 8th, the Russian appointed government reportedly relocated its administration to the town of Vovchansk, in the wake of attacks on the outskirts of Kupiansk. Vovchansk would be recaptured on the 11th.
