Plagiolepis alluaudi

[edit]
  • ... that the little yellow ant, Plagiolepis alluaudi, protects agricultural pests by raising their offspring in the ants' own nest through adulthood? Source: Sun-Sentinel, "So prized are these agricultural pests by the ants, that ants have been known to bring the sap-sucking insects’ larvae to their nests, where they grow to adulthood."
  • Comment: Article was created on Nov 11, but as a stub – see last diff prior to expansion here.

  • Note to promoter and @Rhinopias: I'm still relatively new at DYK reviewing.
  • New enough, long enough, article seems to be free from copyright violations (image appropriately licensed, passed earwig), every paragraph is cited. Hook is stated in article, sourced (although I personally think it would be better to find a source that specified what kinds of pests), and not too closely paraphrased. QPQ doesn't need to be done yet (only two credits so far -- please say this in your nomination). Hook is neutral. I think perhaps you don't need to bold-link the binomen if it has a common name--perhaps that can be bold-linked instead? But that isn't really an issue. Passes.
  • The source says the sap-sucking insects the ants protect include "aphids, scale insects and mealy bugs", but doesn't specify which groups (so, assuming possibly all of them) it may keep in the nest in that line for the source immediately following. Removing the binomial definitely simplifies the hook. Here are some alternatives:
ALT1a: ... that little yellow ant colonies will raise larvae of agricultural pests—such as aphids—in their own nest to acquire honeydew?
ALT1b: ... that little yellow ant colonies raise the larvae of agricultural pests, including aphids, in their own nest?
In an attempt to paraphrase better also. – Rhinopias (talk) 05:01, 17 November 2017 (UTC)
I like both of these alts better than the original one, thanks! (And source did specify aphids all along, whoops) :) Umimmak (talk) 05:06, 17 November 2017 (UTC)
