I may have an example

[edit]

I'm no linguist, but it just occurred to me that there's at least one word in the English language that can, I think, be pronounced with the voiceless labiodental plosive. It's that very special word: fuck. Try it: imagine that you're annoyed at someone, and you say "fuck you". No, you're really annoyed, and you're spitting out that expletive with the maximum amount of scorn and contempt: "fuck you". Now, I think that initial f was more of a plosive than a mere fricative, and I think you just discovered the elusive voiceless labiodental plosive, too.

"One reason that this sound may be so rare is that a person with uneven upper teeth, or gaps between the teeth, will not be able to completely block the flow of air out of the mouth, and therefore will tend to produce a fricative [f] rather than a stop [p̪]"

I can confirm this, my front teeth are quite uneven and I can't produce this phoneme. Strombones (talk) 16:34, 21 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
