Position on white supremacist alt-right movement

[edit]

Given much notable news coverage, I think we need coverage on this [1]. Putting up here in hopes of some assistance with wording since the article is huge. Morty C-137 (talk) 12:32, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed.

Shouldn’t the SBC be designated as an evangelical arm of the Republican Party, a stalwart opponent to women’s rights of all types, and—in a general sense—a hate group?

No, it shouldn't, and it's ridiculous for you to suggest this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1702:26E9:6E0F:A008:8754:FABD:6011 (talk) 02:27, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It seems like it is not ridiculous to suggest this.
It seems you have no arguments and are resorting to name calling. Ripskee (talk) 17:14, 12 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Look, as a former SBC member and Wikipedia editor, I think it's totally fair game to call out the far-far-right leaning positions of the SBC, but I don't think it'd be accurate to call it the "evangelical arm of the Republican Party", nor a "hate group". If you could find a source from a group like the SPLC or otherwise that calls it a hate group, I'd be willing to change my stance; additionally, while the majority of SBC members vote for the GOP, there's no doctrinal claim within its many policies that one HAS to vote for the GOP, or be declared a sinner. Age of the Earth

[edit]

What is their position on the age of the Earth and universe? Are they young Earth creationists? Axl ¤ [Talk] 13:02, 11 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

User:Axl, since they are Baptists, this isn't something that would typically be decided at the denominational level. Each individual SBC church, pastor and member would decide this for themselves. If you're asking how common it is, it could be pretty common and is definitely believed by a good number of SBC members, but there are Southern Baptists who also believe in an old Earth creationist viewpoint. This article might give you more of an idea http://www.bpnews.net/44205/length-of-creation-days-debated. Ltwin (talk) 02:34, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Actions, not views

[edit]

The apnews.com source is clear: the pastors are being disfellowshipped as a result of their actions, not merely because of their views. Elizium23 (talk) 17:38, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Denomination vs. Cooperation

[edit]

To begin with and for complete disclosure, I am a member of a church that is in the SBC. This SBC is not a denomination. It does not own the individual churches or their property, appoint their leaders or have any authority over them. It is a voluntary cooperation of autonomous churches with the same central beliefs who pool some of their resources together for missions. That is how the convention was set up in the 1800s and that is what it is today. That is why you say, "a Southern Baptist church," instead of, "the Southern Baptist Church." This is not a small matter but defines what the convention is and what it does. It is an association, not a denomination. The SBC defines itself as a "cooperation" among other terms and explains that "each Southern Baptist church is autonomous and unique." — Preceding unsigned comment added by TanRabbitry (talkcontribs) 05:19, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TanRabbitry, it is still a denomination - they literally denominate themselves Southern Baptists. These are churches with a common name, history, and beliefs. A loosely organized denomination is still a denomination. Ltwin (talk) 07:05, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If by "denomination," one means simply a group of autonomous churches with common beliefs, that it is correct. But by "denomination," most people refer to hierarchical "big 'C'" Church organizations such as the Methodist Church, the Episcopalian/Anglican Church or the Church of Rome (although if Catholicism is a denomination is an entirely different and very controversial topic). Do you think it would be better to have a sentence saying something like: "The SBC is not a denomination in terms of a hierarchical united Church, but rather is a cooperation of autonomous independent churches with like-minded beliefs on essential topics that pool some resources for missions.?" I realize that is overly long. Thank you for not reverting every use of the word "denomination" I corrected. I think using the word "denomination" while simultaneously having an explanatory sentence on it will be fine. TanRabbitry (talk) 08:06, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
