I have some additional citations that I will add soon. Sashimikid (talk) 19:52, 4 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. I've added three references, Times Of India, Livestrong.com, and Lifepositive.com, in order to improve 3rd party referencing. Is that sufficient to remove the warnings? Sashimikid (talk) 19:44, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Importance

[edit]

I'm sorry to see that editors feel this article not to be necessary. Kaivalyadhama has a remarkably central place in the history of modern yoga, as the institution founded very early in modern yoga's history by Swami Kuvalayananda, who for many years encouraged research into the physiology of yoga (for instance of yoga breathing, pranayama) there. The article isn't cited as well as it could be, but there is no doubt in scholarly sources of its importance. Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:22, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Any sources (I found quite a few passing mentions; have I missed something substantial)? Bon courage (talk) 12:28, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have some here. The Kuvalayananda article just linked is properly sourced. Alter's Yoga in Modern India has extensive coverage. Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:35, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
yes, saw a lot on Swami Kuvalayananda. Bon courage (talk) 12:42, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. Notability is established by published sources in the world, not by what is in the article. Sources on the institute include Alter 2004, Shearer 2020, Singleton 2010, Singleton & Ellen Goldberg 2014, Michelle Goldberg 2015. I'll add some this week. Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:45, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. Notability is established by published sources in the world, not by what is in the article ← Gosh! Bon courage (talk) 12:49, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Unfortunately, large numbers of editors do not know this. Glad you do. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:04, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps my searching was hampered by searching for "Kaivalyadhama Health and Yoga Research Center". Does anybody actually call this organisation that? Bon courage (talk) 20:45, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The first word is the key. Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:46, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is that a "no"? Does it even call itself by the name Wikipedia has chosen? Bon courage (talk) 20:49, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all, it's a yes, but the article has long stated that the full name is frequently abbreviated. It would be appreciated if you'd assume good faith of other editors, not just me but those who wrote this article on a century-old and foundational institution of modern yoga. Many thanks. Chiswick Chap (talk) 21:02, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not assuming bad faith; I'm trying to find out if there's been an error (maybe the place was called this named briefly when the article was written maybe). Did you consider that? or are you - assuming bad faith. Bon courage (talk) 21:07, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I took it that you'd read the article, and indeed that you'd find mentions of the centre under both names to be honest. A quick look at Scholar finds that both searches work, with predictably many more hits for the single word. Chiswick Chap (talk) 21:11, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like possible WP:CITOGEN. The initial (2012) version of the article had no source for the long name, which seems to have appeared (from a non-exhaustive search) only in some subsequent publications. Do you know more? he first version of the article looks like some kind of hoax.[1] Is there a story here? Bon courage (talk) 21:23, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alter gives the institute's name in 1924 as the Kaivalyadhama Yoga Ashram. As the article says, the 1944 society was the Shreeman Madhava Yoga Mandira Samiti (SMYMS). The research arm seems always to have been known as Kaivalyadhama (without the Ashram bit); Indian authors sometimes drop the final "a" as they barely sound the implicit trailing vowel. The 1950 college was the Gordhandas Seskaria College of Yoga and Cultural Synthesis, a jawcracker much like the article's current title.
The phrase "Kaivalyadhama Yoga Institute" is fairly widely used but I believe it is entirely unofficial.
The phrase "Kaivalyadhama Health and Yoga Research Center" is less widely used, and the spelling should be "Centre" as is usual in India. The K. website states in terms "In 1924, he established the Kaivalyadhama Health and Yoga Research Centre in the tranquil settings of Lonavala in Maharashtra’s Pune district." I'll fix the spelling and move the article now. Chiswick Chap (talk) 21:40, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I see the article was originally created as a copy(vio) of what was then called Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health. The long name wasn't sourced. I think it was probably made up. Bon courage (talk) 21:43, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Whatever the case in the article, the centre itself uses the name on its own website, which must be decisive here. Chiswick Chap (talk) 21:52, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:ON. We need the WP:COMMONNAME. Bon courage (talk) 02:41, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
!Shazam! You rubbed the lamp! — Done. You have raised one complaint after another, nearly all unsubstantiated; but I agree that the common name is what we should use. I'm happy we now have a robustly defensible article on this major institution. Enough. Let's stop now. Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:37, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, good work. Bon courage (talk) 07:50, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
