Former Alignment at the Kennedy Space Center

[edit]

There is no good place on the web to discuss this, and may go against "original" research, however, I believe that the FDOT does not have records relating to these realignments. I will contact them. However, I'm presenting this evidence from official government records as circumstantial evidence of previous A1A alignments.

Most of the determination of road aligments is by viewing benchmarks set for the National Geodetic Survey. Each benchmark has an associated record that records where it was placed, and most give driving directions.

The alignments are from looking at the aggregation of information in an area.

Aligments

[edit]

These alignments are presented with the modern road names as shown on Yahoo! Maps (http://maps.yahoo.com)

Alignment #1

[edit]

From present day SR 520 and A1A, go north. In Cape Canaveral, take Atlantic Avenue North, north. The road would have gone straight on the current alignments of Atlantic Avenue North and Jetty Road. Jetty Road would have gone acrossed a bridge over the current port. On the other side, it picks up as Basin Road. Basin Road would have been on the same alignment as the east portion of the Samuel E Phillips Parkway. Continue north to Pier Road. Go east. Pier Road turns into Lighthouse Road. Turn left onto Central Control Road. Based upon topographic evidence, it appears that within 1/4 mile of the turn, the road beared left, and ran along an area between ICBM Road and LC 11-14. The road then proceeded to make an S turn to line up with a north-south road that connects between LC34 and LC37. This short road lines up with a road that extends south of Samuel E Phillips Parkway, just north of LC34. The road continues up to the intersection of the Samuel E Phillips Parkway and Playalinda Beach Road. Then westward to current SR 3 north through the Haulover Canal area, and eventually intersecting with US 1 in Volusia.

  • prior to circa 1959

Alignment #2

[edit]

From present day SR 520 and A1A, go west. At SR 3, go north. Follow the road all the way up through KSC, over the Haulover Canal to the intersection at US 1.

  • circa 1959 to circa 1966

Alignment #3

[edit]

Same as Alignment #2, except at Wilson, go west on SR 402, over the Max Brewer Causeway, and intersect with US 1

  • circa 1966 to 1970

Alignment #4

[edit]

From present day 520 and A1A, go north. Take Atlantic Avenue North until it intersects Astronaut Blvd, take it around until it turns into SR 528. Follow SR 528 until it intersects with US 1

  • circa 1970 to present

To research these, go to http://data.labins.org. Click on the Interactive Map on the "Survey Data" "Horizontal and Vertical Control". Once the main map comes up, ensure that you have disabled popups. Click on the "Data Zoom" tab on the right. Rollover the "NGS" blue link, and do not roll over any of the other options. Select "BREVARD" as the county. Enter the Station Names shown below in. Click Search. Another popup window will appear, and click on "Zoom to". The mark will appear in the main window.

When using the distance tool on the LABINS site, it is within 500 meters of the distance, greater than the distance of travel on current SR 401, or another possible bridge crossing that can be seen between SR 401 and the proposed crossing.

Possible alignments of A1A at KSC/CCAFS

Here's what I have from old maps and other sources

[edit]

1945 definition and 1947 map: Current A1A to Cape Canaveral, then north on Atlantic Avenue towards Port Canaveral, across the barge canal, onto Phillips Parkway, then on Lighthouse Road, Central Control Road and ICBM Road back to the curve on Phillips Parkway. Ended around False Cape, with SR 402 beginning there and running northwest (through Launch Complex 39B) to Wilson, then west to Titusville. SR 3 ran all the way through to US 1 in Volusia. A1A was planned to continue north along the barrier islands to New Smyrna. This had been defined as pre-1945 SR 140, except for the part on Lighthouse Road and ICBM Road, which was SR 273.

A 1966 FDOT map shows the current configuration. (The map was updated after 1966, but the listed updates don't include anything for A1A.) --SPUI (talk - don't use sorted stub templates!) 00:59, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A1A vs. A19A

[edit]

I'm not sure that parallelism can be applied to both roads as implied by the second paragraph of the article. While it is conceivable that A1A could be rationalized to represent "Atlantic 1 Alternate," A19A loops off of Alternate US 19 (yes, A19A still exists, according to Pinellas County ordinance) and would be an alternate to the US 19 Alternate... "Alternate (US) 19A," if you will. As far as G1A is concerned, your guess is as good as mine, and probably better in most instances. B.Wind 21:13, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mileposts

[edit]

I live in Daytona Beach, about a block and a half from the intersection of US92 and A1A. I looked over the A1A signage, but there are no mileposts indicated here. Gamweb (talk) 16:42, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, the only place I've seen mileposts is on the Key West stretch - Marc Averette (talk) 19:32, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Atlantic 1 Alternate?

[edit]

The page cited is the only site I've seen that definitively labels A1A as Atlantic 1 Alternate, and it in no way seems official enough to make a definitive statement here. Other sources: "Some believe the designation stands for “Atlantic 1 Alternate”, but there is a St. Petersburg road A19A which is located on the Gulf."[1] "The twin A's are often said to stand for 'Atlantic 1 Alternate', but this argument fails when applied to the former A19A, a loop off US 19 near St. Petersburg, which touched the Gulf of Mexico rather than the Atlantic Ocean. On the other hand, the former SR G1A was on the Gulf."[2] Seems a bit shaky to make a firm statement.Nwebster84 (talk) 03:11, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Key West section

[edit]

On Google Maps it shows that A1A is also part of the Overseas Highway from Key West to Marathon. Is this correct? Regards, Dionysos1988 (talk) 17:19, 23 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No. --NE2 19:41, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

US-192?

[edit]

In the "major junctions" sidebar, US-192 is not listed as a major junction. As this junction is also the eastern terminus of US-192, should it not also be listed? Erzahler (talk) 18:36, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Probably makes sense to replace SR 518 with US 192. --NE2 19:42, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

1A vs. A1A

[edit]

Route A1A is a alternate route of US 1 but why is there an A? Because A19A is on the Gulf side of Florida. 96.230.56.98 (talk) 00:40, 4 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
