Proposed Change

There should be a paragraph on mud cake eating by Africans where they mix soil with spices in a clay like mixture, especially because of the belief that African babies need the nutrition from soil to make them strong.

Shouldn't all those See Also links by country be in a box? They'd take up less room. 30 June 2005

I do agree. --Bhadani 1 July 2005 17:44 (UTC)
Perhaps time to place all the links in a box.--Bhadani 16:20, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

This article is quite informative but largely reads like a tourism guide. There is extensive application of POV and systemic bias in the style and content. The native African religions are dealt with in a single sentence referring to animism (a fairly broad subject anyway), without even a link(s) to some of the more common or well known examples. The language section is also quite terse.

This article makes far too many ageneralisations and omissions and is far too short to qualify African culture as being particularly diverse and ancient, which it clearly is. A comprehensive analysis could span several articles while remaining concise. There are many pages on african culture subjects that could be linked to this page, but the links have not been set.

Articles on African subjects are notoriously terse on wikipedia, probably due to systemic bias. I'd like to see that condition remedied, preferably by english-speaking africans or students of the subject (come on, people). The brevity of the talk page is also symptomatic of the lack of interest in the field. Is it possible that the very richness and diversity of african culture generates barriers to a unified attempt to create a synthesis on the subject?--ChrisJMoor 04:08, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

I certainly agree with the suggestions as the original creator of the article - actually, POVs may have crept into inadvertantly. Editors more familiar with the subject should come forward to imprvove the quality of the contents. --Bhadani 16:20, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
Just leaving a note to say good progress has been made since my comments above.--ChrisJMoor 11:35, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
Thank you - and surely, we all shall continue to make the page truly encyclopedic. --Bhadani 12:08, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

Missing topics

This article has a limited scope. I was hoping to find out information about family structure, group norms, political structures, and so forth. This article is focused only on arts and crafts and the stories people tell, not on how they actually live their lives now or traditionally before the invasion by the North. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.115.158.189 (talk) 08:02, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

Culture of Africa

Continents do not have cultures. It is too simplistic and amateurish to write of a culture of Africa or the Americas or Asia. It is also not feasible because no such cultures exist. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.89.174.196 (talk) 17:18, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

Continents do have cultures and while it is problematic in containing such diversity in an article, Africa does have consitent features across its geography which are unique. --Halqh حَلَقَة הלכהሐላቃህ (talk) 08:30, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

I believe they shouldn't say culture of Africa, because Africa its continent so they should put that in plural cause Africa has more than one country. also they did not include all the African country in this article. they did not give enough information about clothes, food and music. User:Mukandoli1Mukandoli1 (talk) 22:32, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

What is this article ABOUT??

It says culture of Africa, maybe it should be CULTURE(S) of Africa. And why is language being discussed in a culture article. and next to no info on actually culture beyond language. Then it is talking about Bantu Expansion, but how is that linked to culture of Africa? Whew this article is in a state. For a continent so rich in culture this article is a shame. The European Culture article (to my surprise) was not much better, but this one is Indian_culture--Halqh حَلَقَة הלכהሐላቃህ (talk) 08:13, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

Foundation for improvement

I am not 100% happy with everything i have done, due to the time. But I am 100% happy to have laid some foundation to build the article around. We can refine add, critique, add content, add diverse opinions and make it an article which not only ethno graphs cultures in Africa (a trivial pet project) but deals with the dynamics and histories of African culture. How I found it 2 hours ago, is not where it is now.--Halqh حَلَقَة הלכהሐላቃህ (talk) 09:41, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

Storytelling in the folklore section

I have been researching different types of storytelling in African culture, and would like to add my contribution to the folklore and religion section of this article. What do other contributors think of this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jcartone (talkcontribs) 01:32, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Relevance of North Africa vs sub-Africa to article on African culture

The article is about Culture, so why is the lead discussing race and politics? subjective and complex in their own right but still different from culture. it needs to be deleted because culture in Ethiopia is just as different from South Africa, as SA is different from Morocco. --Inayity (talk) 04:57, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

Inayity, you are probably right about this. It can be removed. Bladesmulti (talk) 05:39, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Who is this article aimed at?

It is hard to understand who this article is aimed at, or what purpose it serves. It doesn't even try to be comprehensive and detailed, and is barely informative at all. Although,it is apparently aimed at readers with literally no idea about life in the world's second largest continent - it would leave them with a very poor idea. The first section 'a historical overview' is woefully lacking in history. There is, astonishingly, no section on literature for the continent in which writing was invented; no section on architecture for the continent of the Pyramids, the Cairo mosques, Great Zimbabwe - need I go on... It's as though it were written for an 8-year old in the 1920s!Ackees (talk) 17:26, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

Just needs expanding, and linking because some of those themes are already in existence. And we need to use other articles on culture as a map for structure, b/c culture is so broad it would never stop.--Inayity (talk) 20:57, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

Not a scholar? Is that the criteria?

You know some people edit to make articles better, others edit because of agendas, And there needs to be tools to detect people who go through a search and just delete content. Now They are referencing a discussion about "Arab slave Trade" by Alik Shahadah to wholesale wipe every link out of Wikipedia. Even as an WP:EL. They say Not a scholar. Am.. what is a scholar?, and where in Wikipedia does it say you have to be a "scholar" I think wikipedia phrases it a little different. A scholar is just someone that knows what they talking about --Inayity (talk) 18:16, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

A discussion thread about the reliability and notability of Shahadah and his pages is taking place at Wikipedia:Neutral point of view/Noticeboard#Owen 'Alik Shahadah, please comment there so we can get a final consensus. Rupert Loup (talk) 12:06, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

culture of africa

The article on culture of African is not notable it is also not verified since it uses secondary sources of information the culture of Africa should highlight the examples of tribes with traditional cultures as maasai of Tanzania and Tanzania ,Himba of nothwest Namibia as a way of improving the article. It should also mention the importance of culture and the target group
