Stuff

[edit]

I nearly started this article myself a while ago. I had seen the film many many years ago and always thought of it as the 'original' version of The Great Escape (there are a few similarities), when I saw it again recently I became aware of the original book.

I read the book about a year ago - it's a remarkable story. It's a real shame that the Dirk Bogardge film ignores most of the more interesting experiences. Apparently he was on "This is Your Life" at some point but I've not been able to confirm this. I read the book assuming it to be a fairly true account but after Googling him after I finished it I became a bit unsure.

There seems to be some confusion as to whether he was a Sergeant or a Sergeant-Major. I've seen it suggested that he was never officialy a Sergeant-Major but adopted the rank while a POW. I've also seen it suggested that he greatly exagerated his assistance to Jewish inmates. I read 'Spectator in Hell recently; a memoir of Arthur Dodd another inmate at Monowitz. He makes a few references to Coward and not in an altogether flattering light. I'll add some more to the article when I dig out these books. I have two copies of 'The Password is Courage' - a paperback edition published a couple of years ago, and a hardback copy from the 50s which has some pictures. Early life?

[edit]

Is anything known about his life from 1905-1937? At present it is a gap. Norvo (talk) 03:25, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Laxity

[edit]

Doesn't this anecdote rather demonstrate that the control was far more lax then usually assumed? --41.151.41.163 (talk) 19:28, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
