Median Home Value

[edit]

Ok, let's bring this back to earth. This was just changed to 499k, which is just a little bit on the high side. The previous number was $399k as cited, but that was only for one section of AH (the cite did not cover areas in AH with median values of $227k, $218k, and $198k. For right now, I'm reverting it back to the 2000 census number of $198,800 until someone can provide a more accurate cite. Kuru talk 23:31, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

We should try to bring this more into the present. We all know that almost no house (save for dumps) in Alamo Heights is valued at less than $200,000, or even $300,000. The typical price per square foot in the area is about $200, and the smallest houses are about 1,000 SF. Zillow (not the best source) says the current median list price is $438,000 [1]. Perhaps a better value can be found somewhere. Where that is I don't know. I do believe $198,000 is misleading though. 209.184.178.1 (talk) 20:02, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Si. Ten year old property values are useless. Median list prices are not the same thing. Maybe there's something new in the census data - will check. Kuru (talk) 21:33, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that a median list price is not a great indicator of "value." But that was the best available with a quick Google search. Hopefully a better statistic can be found. I will also try looking on the Census website. 209.184.178.1 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 21:38, 6 August 2010 (UTC).[reply]

The American Community Survey part of the Census is the one that goes down to the "minor" city level; it does not appear to have been updated with cities under populations of 20,000 since 2000 (see here). It's a damn shame BCAD doesn't have better reporting tools, unless I'm missing something. Still poking about. Kuru (talk) 22:22, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, BCAD probably would not work. Unless you wanted to do the math yourself. I imagine there are at least a couple of thousand residential properties in AH, so that would be essentially impossible. We will have to wait until the latest census data is published, probably later this year or early next.75.1.165.148 (talk) 04:08, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's fairly clear from spot checking on BCAD and looking at the 10-year assessed values that the values have risen rapidly over the last decade - I wouldn't object to simply removing that line, as it is quite misleading at this point. Of course, quite a bit of our census related data on smaller incorporated areas is quickly becoming out of date (median incomes, etc)... :( Kuru (talk) 04:19, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
