Splitting results by division

[edit]

For the second time, I have split the results section by division. The rationale behind this, which I believe is sound, is that if a reader is only interested in viewing the results from division two, then scrolling through those from division one on a mobile phone is a laborious process (and will obviously get worse as the season progresses). By separating the divisions, the division one results section can be collapsed easily and thus avoids the issue. If anyone has a counterargument, then please feel free to present it below.

Issue with archived Cricinfo pages

[edit]

This is a report of a problem with ESPNcricinfo pages saved by the Wayback Machine / Internet Archive. Content is displayed at first, if only briefly, before pages go blank. Since articles can still be viewed by manually stopping pages loading completely, and inspection of the HTML code has revealed that the content is present but encoded as JSON-LD data, I've not deleted any archive links yet. Hopefully, the issue may be resolved at some point, but for the moment I'm not adding any more.

Unfortunately, it seems that Cricinfo is the only website to routinely publish all ECB Reporters' Network dispatches in full.

Any comments or thoughts welcome. Edwin of Northumbria (talk) 01:53, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Div 2 "Standings" table fix

[edit]

An issue has arisen in connection with the match abandoned on 29 August between Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire. As the side responsible for preparing the pitch, Gloucestershire were awarded no points, so if the match is just shown as abandoned then their points total is calculated incorrectly. This cannot be fixed by changing the points for an abandoned game from eight to zero, because the points total for Northamptonshire would then be wrong. As a workaround, I've indicated that Gloucestershire had eight points deducted, which is essentially what happened but this is not made clear in the ECB, Cricinfo, or BBC tables referenced. Not least because I'm unfamiliar with Lua, I haven't time at present to examine the Sports table or Sports table/CricketCC modules to see if a more satisfactory solution exists (e.g. by inserting a hidden column) that wouldn't involve making some changes to the module itself.

I'm going to use a different workaround, which is to treat Gloucestershire as having an additional loss, and Northamptonshire an additional draw (for tie-breaker purposes, this is how the ECB classifies the result). The abandoned column is then reserved for matches where no play occurred. This removes the need for the points deduction, but will generate warnings when the code is previewed. Extra care, therefore, must be taken when updating the table.
