Status report from the Portals WikiProject

[edit]

Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals is back!

The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018.

Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, and design the portals of the future.

As of April 29th, membership is at 56 editors, and growing.

There are design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for each component of portals.

Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.

And, if you are bored and would like something to occupy your mind, we have a wonderful task list.

Article and content selection criteria

[edit]

To consolidate everything in one place, below are the article and content selection criteria from the portal's various subpages. Some of the content is outdated on the subpages, such as nomination matters, which have not been used in some time. As such, some of the content from these pages has been copied here selectively. Selected articles and biographies

[edit]
  • If you wish to add an article for rotation within this portal, please
  • Check its unofficial rating by a WikiProject; it must be B-class or higher to qualify
  • If possible, please accompany the article with a freely-licensed image (such as images released under the GNUFDL, Public Domain.) Fair use images are not permitted, per Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria.

Selected pictures

[edit]
  • If you wish to add an image for rotation within this portal, please
  • Add the image into a subpage of this portal, such as Portal: Brazil/Selected picture/#, replacing the "#" with the number above the current highest. For example, if 20 pictures are in rotation, you would make the number of picture you are creating 21.
  • Update the picture maximum limit parameter on the main Portal
  • Fair use images that are not released under a free license (i.e. Public Domain, GNU Free Documentation License) will be removed on sight.
  • Update this list accordingly
  • Add {{Brazilian selected picture}} to the picture's File page.

Selected quotes

[edit]
  • If you find a decent quote relating to Brazil, please add it in to circulation within the portal. Here are some instructions:
  • Make sure the place you found it is reliable
  • Make sure it is not a controversial quote, such quotes may be removed at whim if deemed inappropriate
  • Create a subpage for the quote, such as Portal:Brazil/Selected quote/#, replacing the # with the number one above the current highest within the quotes.
  • Accompany it with a freely-licensed image if possible
  • Update this list accordingly

Did you know

[edit]
  • A DYK subpage must have at least three interesting facts on it to qualify for transclusion within the portal.

Selected panoramas

[edit]
  • If you wish to add a panoramic image for rotation within this portal, please
  • Add the image in to a subpage of this portal, such as Portal:Brazil/Selected panorama/#, replacing the "#" with the number above the current highest. For example, if 20 pictures are in roation, you would make the number of the picture you are creating 21.

2020 portal updates

[edit]

The following updates have been performed for the Brazil portal. North America1000 11:28, 30 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Updated portal using Template:Transclude random excerpt, which provides readers with current, up-to-date information that is verbatim to that in articles. A consensus approving the usage of transclusion templates in portals was formed at this Village Pump discussion. Used selections moved to the main portal page from Portal:Brazil/Selected article/Archives and Portal:Brazil/Selected biography/Archives.
  • Added a new separate Featured article-class section to the portal, which is reserved for FA-class articles only. This serves to showcase and differentiate some of Wikipedia's finest content on the main portal page. Sorted FA-class entries from Portal:Brazil/Selected article/Archives and Portal:Brazil/Selected biography/Archives into this section. Non-FA-class articles were sorted into the Selected article and Selected biography sections.
  • Updated with more FA-class articles (listed below):
  • Added some B-class articles (listed below) to the Selected article section, to round-out the portal to provide a more comprehensive topical overview:
  • Added a new separate Good article-class section to the portal, which is reserved for GA-class articles only. Sorted GA-class entries from Portal:Brazil/Selected article/Archives and Portal:Brazil/Selected biography/Archives into this section. Non-GA-class articles were sorted into the Selected article and Selected biography sections. New GA-class articles added were:
  • Expanded the Selected biography section with some B-class articles (listed below), to round out the portal to provide a more comprehensive overview.

A couple of updates. —andrybak (talk) 18:46, 15 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to add new selected pictures very fast

[edit]

Section "selected picture" of the portal has been overhauled using template {{Portal pictures}}. To add another picture to the selection, only POTD date is needed. No need to copy-paste captions, no need to fill out a layout template, no need to increase |max= when a new numbered subpage is added. Just add a date. You can also use the search box on the subpage to find other appropriate pictures. —andrybak (talk) 16:15, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"Well-written" articles do not necessarily represent the essence of the country

[edit]

This page of the Brazil portal has serious design problems. There are 3 large blocks that only highlight "well written" articles, however, this does not mean that the articles are highly representative of the country. And that's exactly what happens from the beginning of this misconception. If there were only, for example, well-written articles about Brazilian ants, this is all that would appear on the page. I don't want to discuss here about the themes that are being displayed, however, it is quite clear to any native of the country that the themes presented have several problems, such as being extremely limited in terms of full coverage of what is interesting in the country. If at the beginning of Wikipedia, when there were few articles, this could be an acceptable criterion, now it is no longer. There needs to be random columns, so I created a column called "interesting articles" so that any article about the country can be placed, without meaningless limitations, such as "be a well-written article", which for me, has nothing to do with it, has nothing to do with the portal and is not a valid criterion - the way it is, I just take any irrelevant article about Brazil and turn it into a "good article" and it appears on this portal. 2804:14D:5C87:8E8C:EDB7:4BB6:C106:E2A8 (talk) 18:50, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

General images needs to be greatly enlarged

[edit]

Another massive problem here is the "general images" section. Unnecessarily, people is reverting my editing in this part, where, without any sense, it only takes pictures of 2 articles: "Culture of Brazil" and "History of Brazil", the which is complete nonsense and I can consider editorial bias as well. Today we have in this Wiki articles that were very well prepared over the years and full of vital pictures about Brazil, such as the Economy in Brazil, Industry in Brazil, Tourism in Brazil, Mining in Brazil, Transport in Brazil, Energy in Brazil, and all are extremely representative of the country, much more inclusive than those of Culture and History (which only show old things, and uninteresting for many people), so they should all be included in this section.2804:14D:5C87:8E8C:EDB7:4BB6:C106:E2A8 (talk) 19:04, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
