Poppy Maskill (born 22 March 2005)[1] is a British swimmer, who won gold medals in the 100 m butterfly S14 and the Mixed 4×100 m freestyle relay S14 at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris.
Life
[edit]Maskill was born in 2005 and aged nine she was the Middlewich Rose Queen.[2] In Madeira at the 2022 world championships she took bronze, silver and gold medal. In that years Commonwealth Games in Birmingham she came fourth. She trains near Manchester. Her gold medal at the 2024 Paralympics was especially noted as it was the first won by the British team. She beat Chan Yui-lam from Hong Kong and the bronze went to Valeriia Shabalina.[3]
Later in the same Paralympics she gained a silver medal in the 200m freestyle S14. She had been the fastest in the heats but she was beaten by Valeriia Shabalina.[4] Maskill was chosen as one of Great Britain's flagbearers for the closing ceremony alongside para-taekwondo competitor Matt Bush.[5]
