Golam Nafiz (Bengali: গোলাম নাফিজ; died 4 August 2024) was a Bangladeshi student activist who died in the non-cooperation movement on 4 August 2024. He was laying on a rickshaw on the way of taking to the hospital. His image laying in the rickshaw made him one of the most discussed fatalities in the July Revolution.[1]

Personal life

[edit]

Nafiz was born to Golam Ahmed and Nazma Akter. He was the youngest of two brothers. He lived in Mohakhali with his family. He passed his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Examination from Banani Bidyaniketan School and College.[1] He got admission in the Noubahini College, Dhaka in eleventh grade, but could never attend the college.[2]

Nafiz was actively involved in the quota reform movement. In the first day of the non-cooperation movement, Nafiz, along with his friends, went to the Farmgate–Khamarbari area to join the protests. Around 4.30 pm BST, he was shot by the police in Farmgate intersection. After being shot, he was put up in a rickshaw by the fellow protesters which tried to take him to the nearest hospital. According to the rickshaw puller Noor Mohammad, he was unconscious and still alive then. But the Chhatra League workers blocked the rickshaw on the way, which delayed him to reach the hospital. After reaching hospital, doctor declared Nafiz dead.[1][3]

In the way to the hospital, photojournalist of Daily Manab Zamin Jibon Ahmed captured an epic photo of Nafiz, with a Bangladeshi flag tied around the head, lying in the footwell of a rickshaw laying and spreading the arms and legs. This photo became viral in social media and published on the frontpage of Manab Zamin later day.[1]

His father Ahmed searched Nafiz whole night from hospital to hospitals, only the later day being found his son's corpse at the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital.[1]

Legacy

[edit]

On 19 August 2024, two advisers of the interim government and principle coordinators of Anti-discrimination Students Movement, Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud, visited Nafiz's home.[4] Banani Bidyaniketan School and College named one of their buildings after him.[5]
