Birthlink is a adoption records charity based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It administers the Scottish Adoption Contact Register which gathers the details of adoptees and birth parents to facilitate reunions.
History
[edit]Birthlink was founded in 1911 as the Eastern Division of the Scottish National Vigilance Association, aiming to protect vulnerable woman and girls from the White Slave Trade[1]. In 1941, it changed its name to The Guild of Service. In 1946, it opened Edzell Lodge, a children's home based in Inverleith, Edinburgh.
In 1954, the organisation registered as an adoption agency. In 1978, it changed its name to Family Care[1].
In 1984, Family Care launched the Adoption Contact Register and Birthlink, both intended to allow adoptees to contact their birth parents. It continues to operate this service today. In 2007, Family Care is renamed Birthlink to better represent the organisation's function.
