Subtle incorrectness of the date Changi Air Base was renamed

[edit]

Upon Singapore's attainment of self-determination in 1965, and the withdrawal of British troops, RAF Changi was renamed as Changi Air Base and handed over to the Republic of Singapore Air Force.

This is not quite correct - My father was stationed at RAF Changi, and it was still known as that in 1968 when my family left. I believe in the early 1970s the British were replaced by Austalian services before the base (along with the others) became fully operated by the Singapore defence forces. Can anybody expand on this aspect with some more dates? regards, Lynbarn (talk) 23:34, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there, I was hoping that someone might come along and help me with this, I searched through RSAF main site and it is of no help to me, a lot of details are still quite sketchy. For instance, RAF Chia Keng is one good example, which unit was stationed here in Changi as well the aircraft type. If you had read through RAF Tengah, you would know that I did quite a lot research there and got it wrote down. Hence, this is where you come in, please share with us or better yet, provide your input in the page under the section of "RAF Changi". Thank you. -- Dave1185 (talk) 23:54, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh and by the way, do be bold and write what you knew had been deployed there. I got the Changi Air Base & Changi Air Base (West) parts covered, so I'll just leave you the RAF Changi part to cover. What say you? -- Dave1185 (talk) 23:59, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll do what I can, but I was only 9 when we left, so i may need to do some secondary research first! Regards, Lynbarn (talk) 22:33, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated quite a bit in the article itself as well as uploading some recently discovered old photos but I really really wish that there's more to be added especially when there are other editors around who might be able to contribute more. Feel free to drop by anytime to input, cheers. --Dave1185 (talk) 12:56, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Runway Characteristics & what runway the RSAF actually uses

[edit]

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore website and their array of PDF files of aeronautical and airport charts that I pulled out from the internet, I got a few queries and concerns relating to your Changi Air Base article:

  1. There are 3 parallel runways in Singapore.
    1. Runways 02L/20R and 02C/20C are in use by Singapore (Changi) International Airport.
    2. To my knowledge, runway 02R/20L is a military-only runway used by Changi Air Base. I quote from my sources "...is used solely by the RSAF"
  2. The military runway is shorter than the other two. It's 2750m lengthwise as listed. That roughly translates to about 9022.3ft.
  3. I presume the two abovementioned Changi International Airport runways aren't used by the RSAF. So, unless otherwise stated, it shouldn't be included in your infobox as one of the runways RSAF uses. FYI: In Google Map, I don't see taxiways connecting that military 02R/20L runway to Changi Airports' two main runways anyways :-)
  4. The military runway is Asphalt laid.

In the meantime, I've put citation tags around the runways until the author or contributor verifies and clears up the possible mistake, or that he correctly disputes my facts. Let me know if you have concerns or questions. Regards from an aviation enthusiast ;-) Dexter (talk) 10:43, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • FYI, please read through the whole history of Changi Air Base before you draw the wrong conclusion. The original Changi Air Base was renamed Changi Air Base (West) in 2004 following the establishment of Changi Air Base (East), it co-shares the runway with Changi International Airport whilst Changi Air Base (East) has that single runway allocated for RSAF use exclusively due to its location, which is a good 2 kilometers from Changi Airport and is not connected to the former two. And, runway 02C/20C was the former 02R/20L before the commissioning of Changi Air Base (East) and its newly constructed 02R/20L. Hope you will read more in future instead before jumping the gun and doubting the wrong things, thanks! --Dave1185 (talk) 17:43, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Dexter (aka Cheetincheetah), the other thing is I think you have been looking at the wrong place! Isn't it embarrassing to know that you had been looking at Changi Air Base (East) when this whole article was written for and about the Changi Air Base (West)? Being an aviation enthusiast means to keep reading, photographing and digging around for clues and facts, not jumping to conclusions because you don't see them. For example, you can't see electricity but you do know it is all around us in our daily life, right? I know, for sure, that electricity can cook a man's meal and it can also cook a man. Go figure! --Dave1185 (talk) 09:13, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
