Elise Greig
[edit]Elise Greig (born 20 January) is an Australian playwright, actor, and producer, best known for her roles in Storage[1]and The Creed and writing the play Magpie[3]. She resides in the Gold Coast hinterland with her husband - creative writer, voice-over artist and audio producer Tony Byrne[2] - and their daughter[3]. Outside of her professional work, she is known for her dedication to mentoring emerging artists and her involvement in various community arts projects.
She has received four Matilda Awards[4][5] for her outstanding contribution to Queensland Theatre.
Early life and education
[edit]Elise was born in Brisbane and attended Queensland Youth Theatre while at high school, sparking her passion[6].Elise pursued formal education in theatre, including an acting degree from the University of Southern Queensland and honours and master’s degrees from Queensland University of Technology, where she was awarded the University Medal[7]. She has also completed a Doctorate in Theatre Arts[8] from Griffith University exploring the connection between yoga, playwriting and Romani culture, and trained with Shakespeare & Company in Boston[5].
Acting
[edit]Elise has worked professionally across theatre, film and television since 1997. Her notable acting credits include performances in Reef Break, the Australian premiere of Lot Vekeman’s Poison[9] and the Queensland premiere of Stef Smith’s Swallow[10]. In 2017 Elise received a CentreScreen Award for her performance in the short film, Good Girls, which received international screening[5].
Voice-over work
[edit]Elise is best known for her role as Mrs. Kangaroo in the UK children’s TV series Peppa Pig[3]. Her voiceover work spans various industries, including over 30 commercials for global brands such as Qantas, BMW, and Uncle Toby’s[11] and she was a voice coach on The Thorn Birds: The Missing Years.
Writing and producing
[edit]Elise is an accomplished playwright and producer, beginning her career with her one-woman show, The Romany Project[5]. She has several published works including Hopelessly Devoted[12], a play exploring family dynamics through the music of Olivia Newton-John, box office success Creche and Burn, and Magpie[5]. Across her career, Greig has dramaturged many works and has her own production company, e.g..[13]
Awards and recognition
[edit]Elise has been recognized for her outstanding contributions to the arts, including four Matilda awards [4], three Goldie awards and a Centrescreen award for Good Girls[5]. In 2018, she was longlisted for the Queensland Premiers Drama Award and was Chair of the Matilda Awards Judging Panel[14].
