e Light Infantry hasthree divisions, viz., at Portsmouth, Chatham, andDevonport respectively, where officers and menremain until they are drafted for their tour of seaservice. On entry, recruits for the Marine LightInfantry do not proceed to join a division, butundergo all their recruits training at Walmer, wherethe depot of this corps is established. Portsmouthis always the head-quarters of the Marine Artillery,their barracks being at Eastney. Here all officersand men of this branch of the great sea regimentare stationed when not attached to a ship, and allMarine Artillery recruits similarly go to Eastney. As illustrating the size to which of late years thefleet has grown, it is interesting to note that sincethe close of the last century the personnel of thefleet has increased by some 20,000. At present thetotal number of officers and men in the sea serviceis 96,771, and includes 25 flag officers, 4430 com-missioned officers, 812 subordinate officers, 1797 JAPANESE BATTLESHIP AS A HI

Employed in the coastguard are103 commissioned officers, 247 chief officers, and4019 petty officers and seamen, a total of 4369.The total of the Royal Marines is 19,983, made upof 467 commissioned officers, 44 warrant officers,1415 staff officers and sergeants, 646 buglers andmusicians, 17,062 rank and file, and 349 band boys.This gives a total for the whole fleet of 121,123, butthis does not take into account cadets and pensionersserving in the fleet, boys in training, and employeesof the various establishments ashore, which makesup a further total of 8777, thus bringing the grandtotal up to the large figure of 129,900.
