Notes | French Medal for Veterans of Dunkirk awarded to Corporal William Henry Deakin MM. The medal was awarded in recognition of the sacrifice of 30,000 combatants (British and Allied forces) during the Dunkirk evacuation, 29 May to 3 June 1940. Corporal Deakin, born in Leigh, UK, served during WW2 with the Durham Light Infantry (service no 3529549), taking part in Dunkirk, the Liberation of Geel (Belgium), and was a POW on crematorium duties at Auschwitz and Helle. After the war he settled in New Zealand and volunteered for service in Korea with K-Force. He died in 1999 - | |||||||||||||||||||||||
