Summary

Description

English: Les Conques is a vast, mountainous amphitheatre which covers the south-easternmost sector of the commune of Vernet-les-Bains, in the Pyrénées-Orientales of France. It is also the uppermost part of the catchment area of the Saint-Vincent river. This amphitheatre rises from an altitude of about 1800 metres to the summit of the Canigou massif at 2785 metres. The section of the crest on the left in this image is part of the Pic Joffre-Pic du Canigou ridge, and the section on the right is the Pic du Canigou-Quazemi ridge.

Les Conques is mostly covered by scree, boulder fields, and glacial till. This material is derived from the underlying geological formations - Ediacaran metasediments, Quazemi gneiss (Ordovician), and leucogranite (Hercynian).

The whole amphitheatre is thought to have been covered by a glacier during the most recent (Würm) glacial period (that is, within the last 100,000 years).
