| Description |
"Let's be careful out there." The oldest police station in Chicago, the 7th District served the Little Italy neighborhood of Chicago for 110 years. During that time, famous criminals from Al Capone to Tony Accardo were detained here. From 1981 to 1987 it also served as the exterior location of the fictional "Hill Street Blues" precinct house seen in the opening credits and establishing shots from the show. Built in 1888, the station served "Bloody Maxwell Street," known as a tough section of town plagued by Black Hand gangs. A nearby illegal booze warehouse owned by the Genna brothers paid out so many bribes to policemen, who literally lined up outside for payoffs, that it became known as "The Precinct" rather than this police station. The station was shut down in 1998. It now houses the campus police of the University of Illinois. Located at 949 W. Maxwell St. |
