Summary

Description

A scale diagram of a CarTrak ACI plate for a railroad car. The plate contains information for a hypothetical railroad car owned by RailBox corporation, with a car identification number of 33646. The black portion around the labels is a metal back plate, painted a non-reflective black that labels were often affixed to, which was then mounted onto a railroad car.

The barcode is read from top to bottom.

  • Line 1: Start - Identifies the start of the barcode. (Same on all barcodes.)
  • Line 2: Equipment Code Number
  • Line 3-5: AAR ACI Owner Identification Number
  • Line 6-11: Car Identification Number. (If a car identification number is less than 6 numbers, then leading zeros are used)
  • Line 12: Stop - Identifies the end of the barcode. (Same on all barcodes.)
  • Line 13: Check Digit - Confirms correct scanning of the barcode.

CarTrak check digit formula
How to calculate[a] the KarTrak ACI check digit:
  • Line 1 times 1; 1×1=1
  • Line 2 times 2; 4×2=8
  • Line 3 times 4; 9×4=36
  • Line 4 times 8; 8×8=64
  • Line 5 times 16; 0×16=0
  • Line 6 times 32; 3×32=96
  • Line 7 times 64; 3×64=192
  • Line 8 times 128; 6×128=768
  • Line 9 times 256; 4×256=1,024
  • Line 10 times 512; 6×512=3,072

Then add all answers together.

  • 1+8+36+64+0+96+192+768+1024+3072= 5,261

Finally divide the previous answer by 11.

  • 11√5261 = 478 R3

The check digit is the remainder, in this case: 3.

Notes

  1. The actual first line, 'START', is ignored for calculating the check number. Thus 'Line 1' is actually 'Line 2', 'Line 2' is 'Line 3', etc
