Description

Cantharellus confluens (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) R.H. Petersen

Image location: Big Thicket, Tyler Co., Texas, USA

Found in the upper portion of the Turkey Creek Unit of the Big Thicket National Preserve. Spores ~ 7.1-9.7 × 4.8-6.0 microns, elliptical to elongate and smooth. Several of the fruit bodies had at least 2 caps on a single stem indicating Cantharellus confluens. While this species may be a poster child for “Splitters”, I’ll add it to my life-list. I also found some Cantharellus lateritius in the Unit. I suspect DNA studies will someday sort this out.
