Ajara is a census town and the taluka headquarters of Ajara taluka in the Kolhapur district of the state of Maharashtra, India. Ajara is a developing city and has a Nagar Panchayat.
Ajara is mainly famous for its Ajara Ghansal Tandul rice. There are two rivers flowing through Ajara, Chitra and Hiryankeshi. Ramtirth, where Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita stayed during their Vanvas of 14 years, is located here.[citation needed]

[edit]Ajara is located at 16°07′N 74°12′E / 16.12°N 74.2°E. It has an average elevation of 660 m (2,170 ft).
It is known for its scenic and green landscape.
Ajara is 84 km from Kolhapur and 33 km from Amboli Hill station. The nearest major city is Gadhinglaj.
Demographics
[edit]As of 2011[update],[1] Ajara had a population of 18,000. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Ajara has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 55% of males and 45% of females literate. 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.[2] Marathi is predominantly spoken in the city.
